I've started a new campaign against Dirty Harry ( the title of the AAR is in reference to his name ), and is something I could imagine Dirty Harry saying to the Japanese player!!

We have'nt played each other before so for me its going to be interesting.

Here is a list of our House Rules:

1. POLITICAL POINTS

Units with permanently restricted HQ’s must pay full PP to cross National Borders.

2. STRATEGIC BOMBING

No strategic bombing in or out of China until : Anywhere from 1941 to start of 1944
No Chinese City bombing until 1944.
No bombing of Chinese Industry.

3. 4 ENGINE BOMBERS

No 4xEngine naval bombing below 10,000ft

4. TF's

No having dozens of 1 ship TF's surrounding important Carrier/Surface fleet TF's to confuse enemy TF's and Air Groups.

5. Land Movement

No dropping of Para Fragments.
No mixing of Chinese Nationalist and Communist units in same hex.

This is the Game setup:

FOW = ON
Advanced Weather = ON
Allied Damage Control = ON
PDU = ON
Historical First Turn = ON
7th December 1941 Surprise = ON
Reliable US Torps = OFF
Realistic R&D = ON
No Unit Withdrawals = OFF
Reinforcement = Fixed
Turn Cycle = 1

Any comments/suggestions/criticism's are welcomed.

As regards to troop dispositons I will put them down tomorrow.

I am an avid student of the 'Mike Solli's School of Economics', and I am using his great summary of the usage of the Japanese Merchant Marine to get them all to the right places.

So here is the Industry Screen for 8th Dec 1941.

To start with I am going to slowly increase Vehicle production to 400.

All the usual suspects in Aircraft and Engine production have been stopped and/or reassigned to more useful designs.

At the start of the war, my major priority is to increase the production of the Oscar Ic, and the Zero, and these will be the mainstay of fighter production until R&D gives up better aircraft.

To pay for the war, a huge effort will be made in China to secure industry and resources, whilst in the south, no effort will be spared to secure the SRA.

This is the Allied Ships Sunk Screen.

I'm pretty confident about Repulse and Prince of Wales, as both had several torps stuck in them.

This is interesting as I have come to a different conclusion regarding ships sunk at PH.

The Intel Screen suggests that it was West Virginia, Arizona, and Oklahoma that went to the bottom, whereas I think only Maryland and Arizona are almost dead cert's for the breakers yard. I had'nt even considered Oklahoma as being fatally damaged.

Interesting. I shall keep tabs on these ships and see what comes out in the wash!!

Combat Summary 8th December 1941

Well, the 8th of December 41 started of with the TB's Kamo & Kiji intercepting AK's fleeing from Hong Kong.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Hong Kong at 77,61, Range 4,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
TB Kiji
TB Kamo

Allied Ships
xAK Hinsang, Shell hits 22, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAK Munlock, Shell hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

These TB's had been sent out to intercept ships leaving Hong Kong and they performed the task admirably with their React setting set to 3. What happened next was more surprising

Night Time Surface Combat, near Hong Kong at 77,61, Range 2,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
TB Kiji
TB Kamo

Allied Ships
MTB 7, Shell hits 3, and is sunk
MTB 8
MTB 9
MTB 10
MTB 11
MTB 12
MTB 26
MTB 27

I've taken a gamble and used the Singora Covering Force to bombard Kuantan, with the hope of knocking out the airfield there. Good result, but they now have to replen their ammo at Camh Ran Bay.

Night Naval bombardment of Kuantan at 51,79

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
Hudson I: 14 damaged
Hudson I: 1 destroyed on ground
Blenheim I: 4 damaged
Beaufort V (PR): 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
BB Haruna
BB Kongo
CA Atago
CA Takao
CL Jintsu
DD Hibiki
DD Akatsuki
DD Arashio
DD Michishio
DD Oshio
DD Asashio

Allied ground losses:
103 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 6 destroyed, 28 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 1 disabled
Guns lost 9 (2 destroyed, 7 disabled)
Vehicles lost 16 (4 destroyed, 12 disabled)

Airbase hits 26
Airbase supply hits 6
Runway hits 75
Port hits 11
Port supply hits 5

F1M2 Pete acting as spotter for BB Kongo

But Kamo and Kiji were still not finished!!( I'll have to award the commander something, he's got balls!! ):-

Day Time Surface Combat, near Hong Kong at 76,61, Range 3,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
TB Kiji
TB Kamo

Allied Ships
MTB 8
MTB 9, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
MTB 10
MTB 11
MTB 12
MTB 26, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
MTB 27

Reduced visibility due to Rain

Give those guys some sake!
Unfortunately they have expended most of their ammo and are returning to Takao for an ammo replen.

But I had one shock combat report:-

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Kure Island at 153,87

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 12 NM, estimated altitude 18,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 4 minutes

Allied aircraft
F2A-3 Buffalo x 9
SBD-3 Dauntless x 18

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AO Shiriya, Bomb hits 12, and is sunk

Aircraft Attacking:
8 x SBD-3 Dauntless releasing from 3000'
Naval Attack: 1 x 1000 lb SAP Bomb
8 x SBD-3 Dauntless releasing from 2000'
Naval Attack: 1 x 1000 lb SAP Bomb
2 x SBD-3 Dauntless releasing from 4000'
Naval Attack: 1 x 1000 lb SAP Bomb

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring AO Shiriya

Thats one AO down already...curses. But on the upside, his carriers have shown themselves.
With KB only 400 miles away, the hunt is on and all bets are off.
I've never gone American CV hunting at the start of the game as we all know where they are, and I just think its gamey to do that, but as they have revealed themselves and drawn blood, I can only respond in kind.....the games afoot!!

Elsewhere, Makin was taken, Sasebo 3rd SNLF landed at Kwangchowan, ready to take it next turn, more troop unload on the Malayan Peninsula, and the Mainland China campaign got off to a good start:-

Ground combat at Pengpu (90,50)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 5486 troops, 38 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 185

Defending force 1374 troops, 18 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 45

Japanese adjusted assault: 94

Allied adjusted defense: 4

Japanese assault odds: 23 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: preparation(-), morale(-), experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker: leaders(+), leaders(-)

Japanese ground losses:
48 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
923 casualties reported
Squads: 33 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 27 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 3 (3 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units retreated 1

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
13th Ind.Mixed Brigade

Defending units:
89th Chinese Corps

So tea and medals all round for the 13th Ind Mixed Brigade!!

Here is the Intel screen for 9th Dec 41.

He is throwing everything at airfield bombing runs in Malaya, so losses are high, but with Georgetown's Airfield taking the brunt of the bombing and Kuantan bombarded, it will give him something to think about over the next few days. ( Hopefully!! )

Do I feel lucky?

The reason I'm asking myself is the dangerous Mersing Gambit Strategy.
I've never employed it, as it is real gambit, what with Singapore unsubdued & with loads of aircraft.
The advantages seem to outweigh the risks, and with the distinct possibility of shortening the siege at Singers.

Well nothing ventured as they say. I'm going to go for it

By house rule #1 do you mean those units may not change HQs even when allowed by the game?

rule #3: the raid at Ploesti was below 100 feet (I've seen photos, that's no BS) but those Liberators got mauled badly by flak.

I've heard nothing but bad things about Advanced Weather. Are you sure you want to do that? Too late now I guess.

Oh, and if he starts talking to an empty chair, how many victory points do you get?

If they are allowed by the game its fine.

I just included it because it seems to be a standard house rule that many seem to abide by, but to be honest I'm not that bothered by it.

Whats wrong with advanced weather? I thought it was more realistic. I've never had a problem with it.

Not quite sure what the above means

I was referring to Clint Eastwood's performance at the Republican Convention. On the Advanced Weather, I'll try and do some research and report back.

What the heck does Coruscant get in the way of news from Earth anyway?

This is just the first post I looked at, and here's a sample from it. This was posted by ADB123.

Since I always play the Game with Advanced Weather set to “On”, and always complain about the resulting unbelievably bad weather, I decided that I ought to try a game with Advanced Weather set to “Off” just to see what the difference really is.

One obvious difference is in the large-sized “Weather Map”. The full screen Weather Map looked like this:

Partly Cloudy___Partly Cloudy___Partly Cloudy
Partly Cloudy___Partly Cloudy___ Partly Cloudy
Partly Cloudy___Partly Cloudy___Partly Cloudy

While, of course, the full screen Weather Map with Advanced Weather “On” usually looks like this:

Iceberg Earth________Iceberg Earth_______Iceberg Earth
Noah's Flood_________Noah's Flood________Noah's Flood
End of the World_____End of the World_____End of the World

Me again. At the end he decided not to ever use Advanced Weather "On" again. I will look for more opinions but it'll be awhile before I can post about it. At least the Weather Map didn't say

Permian extinction______End of the Dinosaurs__________2012, the end of the Mayan Calendar

Good luck Empire101! When you say "new campaign", which scenario are we talking about?

@geoff: If you heard only bad things about advanced weather you were probably not listening enough. Never had an issue with that.

Quite the contrary, I would never play without it. The only things turning advanced weather off result in is: unrealistic weather, and no ability to forecast it anymore.

Understandable, I imagine one or the other AFB might be thankful for that shortage.
