Hi
I'm thinking of getting DW.
Normally I'm a WWII strategy gamer with the like of Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge but fancy a change.
Its either DW or War in the Pacific : AE, which I played in a previous incarnation some/many years ago.

Do I need to get all three packages or can I start with basic DW and get the add-ons later?

Any thought and suggestion gratefully received

You can of course start with the original only.

Each expansion brings improvements, and there could be offers that makes buying all at once cheaper (I don't know), but apart from that there is no problem.

Based on what I have read, It is better to get at least the first expansion but best enjoyed with all of the expansions. The UI is better in the expansions and a lot of features have been added (not sure of the difference since I bought all in one go).

Anyway if you are a fan of 4x games then this is a great game though my only complain is the lack of control of the private sector and I sort of miss building planetary improvements like other space 4x games.

Off topic though, I am the other way around. I am a 4x gamer who is trying to find a great WW2 game off matrix store and I must say that I wanted to get panzer corps but I would prefer something complicated with a lot of option to do what-if scenarios and preferably a huge map

I have to say compared to DW, with Legends it's like a different game!

It's more rounded, feature rich and complete (hence my argument that DW should be much cheaper to compensate for the evolution).

I'd say go the whole hog and get the full set or don't bother.

Have a look at Gary Grigsby's War in the East if you want BIG mainly land based strategy.
Or War in the Pacific - Admiral's Edition both of these are BIG and what I would call 'project games'.

I played both these back in the day a loved them. But they are Big.

Now you making me think lol........

Well I'm an all or nothing kind of guy, but I think it's even more applicable to DW. :)
