Hi all,

This is an Alt VC 41-45 GC. I'm the SU and Saper 222 is the Axis.

We've the following guidelines in place:

No silly paradrops, mulling, HQ Buildup spam etc.
Random weather
Full FOW
Locked HQ's

Saper is clearly a talented player (from reading the AAR written by Kamil) so I accepted this challenge.

A pretty impressive opening by Saper.

Here's the views after recon:

North after most movements. No pockets were breakable.

Skirmishes out in front of Pskov. Hope to hold here as long as possible.

Once more. Skirmishers and weak units outfront. They're all expendable and are only speed bumps. I'll be refitting anything from the Dnepr east.

No pockets are breakable here.

South:

The Lvov Pocket was breakable as elements of 39th Tank Division and 240th Motorised Divisons met up NE of Chernovtsy.

The Rovno pocket was not breakable despite a few attempts to remove Panzer Rgt's.

A few other successful attacks were launched within the Lvov Pocket. The units are dead so I figured they may as well take some Nazi's and their morale with them.

Red Circles = successful attacks.

Blue Circles = un-successful attacks.

P.S. I haven't moved anything east of the pockets yet.

No ZOC behind Dneper below Mogilev can be dangerous. Panzers with 45+MP and morale above 85 should be able to cross.

Hi Bobo.

I doubt they'll be able to reach their through my forces and cross the Dnepr next turn

Tank division on Berezina will route, so will the motorized division. Units in Mogilev are really crap. No matter what side I was playing, but if attacked on turn 2, they always routed.

Common mistake I made in '41 of my current game was calculating estimated panzer reach based on how many units they would have to plow through. Failing to take into account there may be one last unit that gets a path 'free and clear' because early units knocked my defenders out of the way. My estimations of German reach were usually a week behind reality as consequence.

Is this a server game or regular PBEM?

Turn 2.

End of Soviet Turn.

North:

Surprisngly Saper didn't advance towards Pskov but left his panzers over the Daugava and used some to create a small pocket further south. Fine by me. Another week for my forces to ready themselves up here.

Here's the 2 small pockets he formed.

4 divisions worth in total. No biggie.

You'll also notice I reinforced the VL region. This was impreative as there were few units here and the AGN/AGC Panzers could have comfortably rushed through here on turn 3 to jeopardise Smlonesk and Pskov.

Mogilev:

The Dnepr was reinforced and an attacks pushed back a Rgt of the 20th Mtr Division west of Mogilev.

South:

Saper is very skillful at creating his pockets. This is fun.

He created another extension to the Lvov Pockets by trapping another 11 Div's of SW/Southern Front.

This is certainly serious as there's not enough force to defend in the south right now.

On the plus side I managed to break the pocket and free up Lvov as a whole.

I conducted 7 attacks within the pocket, 4 of which were successful against Rgt's.

The pocket is doomed though so I cut my losses and retreat eastwards.

South overview:

I pulled back everywhere to prevent mass pocketing next turn. I brought up what I could to the Dnepr as well.

Usual fare - SEC Rgt's out front and I put 3 Div's into Odessa. Need some Hardcore Nazi's to get rid of these (Defensive CV of 63).

Thoughts/Admin:

I moved the ARM facs out of Mogilev this week.

The Red Airforce was back in play this week. A lot of Re-org. I'm quite harsh with my culling of dross. 16 x Airbases were disbanded. There's just too many to go around. Most of the SAD's were disbanded as were a couple of PVO's and a few Air HQ's. The airbases have either a mixture of LB's and FB's or just Fighters. The VVS are set up as they should be with Night Time Bombers and Transports with a few fighters.

I don't conduct any GS missions in 41. All the effort is on Interdiction and CAP.

Saper is a very talented player. I'm going to enjoy this game. It's pointless fighting too far forward against him so the plan is to keep at arms length UNTIL defensive terrain is present or we're near a key objective. If I keep either LG or Moscow and don't lose too many men I'll be happy with 41. I aim to keep as many Cav Div's as a I can as they form the first decent offenisively mobile units - Cav Corps in October.

I aim to hit back at Axis units where I can. Interesitingly Saper micro-manages his units a lot and very well BUT he does like to divide Div's into Rgt's which makes pockets more secure BUT does mean some counter-attacks can succeed against weaker Rgt's. I'll take this.

I won't start any C&C re-org until the Corps HQ's disband in a few weeks time.

Any questions or thoughts post away!

Interesting so far. I think he made a mistake not pressing closer to Pskov to clear a path for his infantry. I would doubt he is going to just screen the Leningrad area as it leaves too much committed for just a screening operation. Even if he goes for the big central thrust, he needs time to advance the railheads.

The other thing I agree with you on is he seems to be a bit too regiment happy, which is presenting you with opportunities to weaken his moral with successful counter attacks.

Turn 3.

End of SU turn.

North. Saper closed on Pskov this turn. I re-orged and threw SEC Rgt's as a screen and formed the first line of defence in front of LG at the Luga line.

A few units are scraped together for the Lovat line south of Lake Ilmen as well

The Landbridge is partially breached so I withdraw with a Checkerboard. Additional defensive lines are started west of Vyazma.

South.

The Panzers advance rapidly and surround 2 x Tk and 1 x Mtr Division around Zhitomir. I open the pocket briefly for a week.

Other than that I pulled back the Southern Front units a bit just to bide time.

Rain in South Soviet Zone halts a lot down there.
