Minobe is on the bridge, reporting to Takeji.
There have been the usual problems below, another feed pump has failed, an ammunition elevator has jammed, the ventilation down aft is screwy.
But none of these things are the topic, as ever, two things dominate.
Fuel and feed.
Fuel, because Miri, 120 miles ahead, is no longer going to be visited, there are too many submarines lurking about there.
Do they have enough for singapore?
The answer, is, "If we do not truck about" just enough
Feed, because 2A boiler chloride refuses to lower, despite the frequent blows. This, Minobe is explaining, happens if boilers are not cleaned. 2A boiler (and the others) are now well beyond the recommended hours........

Boiler cleans can happen in Singapore, if they are allowed a week alongside.
The enemy remain passive. Takeji thinks they will get Minobes week.

Nobody attacks over Christmas.

Hosho watches from the mouth of his bunker the battles over head
For the first time in many, many days, the allies are trying to bomb 55th division. Today, it seems, they will pay a stiff price.
They count the liberators fall as they crawl across the sky, the tojo's contrails weaving crazily about them.

"I count 4"
"5 now"
Hosho shakes his head. Does it matter, 5 or fifty?. They will keep coming now that they have begun.
Let them.
His Bunker is deep, well hidden, dominates the river. As do all the others along this line. This, he thinks, is what you call a strong position.
Let them come.

Zuiho is sans aircraft, thus she has no need for launching speed.
Minobe wrangles permission from Takeji (it is not a hard decision, really) and internal boiler cleans are ordered for 2A and 1A boilers
Boiler cleans, at sea, in the tropics
They will not be easy.
Charge instantly becomes the most hated man onboard, the water to the baths is shut off, every drop the evaporators make will have to go to feed, the taps will be turned on for 10 minutes per hour, miss out, you miss out.

Preperations move swiftly, the two boilers are secured, and emptied.
It is going to be a "dry clean", this one. Once the boilers are stripped of internals, air driven rotary
brushes will be fed down each tube in turn. But that is two days away. The boilers have to be opened, and the internals removed first.
Flexible ventilation trunking begins to be rigged. Hammers and spanners appear from hidden places. The Charge has to give few orders , his Senior sailors, his leading seaman, have been there done that.
But it does not matter how many times they have done it. It is still going to be a pig of a job.

Fuchida is playing cards with half a dozen of his fellow pilots, when Biaks alarm bells rings
'Scramble!, scramble!, scramble!"
It is 50 feet to the fighter, fifty feet of heart thumping blur as they race to the machines.
Grab the rope, pull your self up, leg over, down, hands grasping the screen
Other hands reaching over, doing his straps, as well practiced hands fly across the controls,.
Switches on, fuel on, flaps set, pump the primer, wave the hand.
'Contact!
With an explosive bang, she fires up, revs up, mix?, set..............magnetos!
Heart still pounding.....Fuchido glances around.........three fighters already moving.and across the field, four oscars are already streaking down their side of the strip.
Brakes off........throttle, rolling, rolling, wings bouncing, rudder, rudder, waiting his turn, throttle savagely forward, thrusting into the seat, stick alive, stick alive, climbing swiftly, jungle, ocean, 3000 feet, banking, climbing, following the stream up, other following..........what a bloody mess, no formation at all

7000, 8000, and no more needed, the big bukas are coming in, big and brass and bally....5000 feet.

Throttle wide, wide now, engine a snarl, banking vertically, sweeping in, slicing into the flanks of this stream of gleaming aluminium

There are 30 plus bombers, and only 18 tojos have intercepted.

This one, this one will do, gee's climbing as the turn in steepens, steepens, coming in at the root of the great wing.the hammer of the guns, tracer coming back, inverting, under the buggar, rolling upright, pulling up, up, sun dancing actross the sky, gasping, gasping, diving again, ocean, jungle..strip! below!.........

Firing again, firing, the chatter, the hiss of empty guns, diving past, diving vertical, world racing up, easing her out, the trees , water, flashing past below.

Now Banking, banking, watching the stream pass imperiously on over Biak, the smoke, the flames rise, as the bombs stream down

BUKAS!, BUKAS!, BUKAS!

26 aircraft are destroyed on the ground at Biak. 3 liberators have gone down The field is "closed"
But even as he lands, Fuchida can see the men of the three engineering regiments already working to make the damage good

They will fight again tomorrow.
Fight the Bukas.

From First fleet
to
Combined fleet

Intercepted enemy transmission " many enemy carrier squadrons identified DEI."
Replied..."Impossible for enemy carriers to have arrived in area as of yet"

(Cantona is asking me , was that carrier X group, how did your carrier get there so quickly?........at least I am planting some seeds of doubt!)

Zuiho loses a fighter.

The Sentai records will be brief
Fighter 217 destroyed in ground accident.
Fighter 219 damaged in ground accident

Not many details yes?. then again, carrier decks don't usually have ditches to taxi into.
Nor trees to clip wings with for that matter...........

It is a good thing that the waters about Singapore are calm, for Zuiho and her companions ride high on the waters.
Fuel is short, fortunately Singapore has more than enough.
Takeji hopes to hear that his missing airgroups will be ordered back home.
After that?, who knows.
Below decks, work on the boilers continues, inside the steam drums men labour at removing the steam pipe, the fed pipe, the deflectors, the crude steam scrubbers.
It is cramped, horrid work. The heat (for the other boilers are of course still running) is barely bearable, but must be.
The men will work in shifts, cursing metal, men, and the mothers who born them into this world.

The Bukas come again

20 of them this time, and this time 20 of 47th sentai wait for them.

Fuchida see's them at 20 miles, glints of light flashing on wings and bodies, growing rapidly into small crosses.......
Half a dozen george fighters flick and flitter about them.
Even from here, ..........their hearts are not in it............

Wings waggle, radios crackle
Attack!
Stick over, banking, calmer today, thinking a little about it, cold, calculating, thinking, thinking about it.
hand easy on the stick, the world rotating as they bank nearly vertical, stick into thigh, feet dancing on the pads, levelling out...the engine snarling again, the world vibrating, ..........head on attack!

The bombers grow frighteningly fast, 500 feet below him, stick forward a little, wait, wait, fire!, .
The thudding, thudding thudding of the guns, tracing reaching, flashes, tracer hitting, sparkling, guns swinging at him, blasting past the great beast.Betty Blue.Buka to your truking Betty blue..............stick hard over, banking, stick savegedly back the other way, dust rising from the floor, the next great beast, snap shot, under him.............and its over.

Breathe again

A tojo falls past him, spinning , wing gone...........occupant floating behind..............chute blossoming............good.
A liberator fliees inverted, 45 degrees to the ground, flames streaming..............and no chutes............double good

Biak is a mess.
The Oscar unit has been caught still on the deck, many of the george fighters have not even got onto the strip......too many damaged planes, too few mechanics.
Fuchida weaves his way down, past the burning wrecks, the craters.

The silence after the engine is killed is short.
Even from here..the screams of the wounded.
His ground chief greets him...."How many chief?"
"It looks a lot worse than it is sir, 10 hits only.we will have you in the air again tomorrow!"
Good.
4 Liberators have gone down today, 1 tiger. Good, a good return. 40 men for none.
yes, they will be in the air again tomorrow.
They will pay the butchers bill, for they are japanese.
Will the Americans?

The tube cleaning has begun
Inside the steam drum, the stokers manouvre the long air hoses with the rotating brushes into each tube in turn
With a shout, the air is turned on, and the brush goes to work, dragging itself to the bottom of the tube.
The progrees is accompanied with ear shattering noise, and a dust storm any desert would be proud of.
The hoses however are marked, the brush will not be allowed to leave the bottom of the tube, getting it to come back up when that happens is a buggar of a job.
Each tube takes about 3 minutes. There are 1060 tubes.............

Zuiho has reached Singapore, where pier space is now a premium. She actually rests 3 ships out,, nestled, dwarfed in fact by Zuikaku.
There is no leave. There is no time for any anyway.
Fuelling. Stores, repairs, a million things that must be done.
The airgroups are returning, for the threat to the DEI is now judged to have receeded. And how is that?

For a mighty fleet sails of wewak, still headed north
The enemies next move up the PNG coast is unmistakably coming.

When the two men entered the Admirals room, he held no suspicion, no fear
"Herbiesan would like to meet you sir"
"Now?"
'Now"

He still held no fear, no doubt as they journeyed through the streets of Tokyo, until the car abruptly turned into 65th brigades barracks.
Confusion reigned in his mind, as they escorted him to the plain room, why meet him here? What was this about.
The Men at the door, did not really seem like guards at all, not at all that is, until the unmistakable sound of a rifle volley filled the air outside.
And a few moments, again.

Confusion, though, turned to fear when the colonel entered the room...........pistol in hand.
"Herbiesan will deal with you know"
Deal?"
"What is deal"
Fear is replaced with denial as they enter the courtyard, replaced instantly with terror..the soldiers in line, the post, the pools of blood at the post...........

"What?, what?..........

The Admiral is still trying to comprehend what is happening, how have they been betrayed when the bullets strike.

This will be the last rebellion, and the last full stop of the revolution.
Herbiesan takes full , and personal command of the war. He will wear the mistakes, and the victories.
And should Japan lose this war, then he will take her people down with him.

It rains over Biak this day, a blessing, and a curse.

Blessing, for there are no bombs
A curse, for the fighters from other bases that have expended themselves flying LRCAP.

The enemy must strike tomorrow, Fuchida and his fellow Tigers know this. It is the cantona way. The orders are simple.
Keep Biak functional.
It will be easier said than done.

CV Taiho reaches Japan, and is immediately dry docked

91 days repairs
91 days from a single torpedo hit.
her captain grumbles ....".I have seen destroyers almost blown in two from a single torpedo fixed in a quarter of that...... how in the hell can this take 91 days?"
The dockyard retort is pretty blunt. "Destroyers usually don't have elevators that are 6 inches screwed off line iether.........think your self lucky, Kaga is still in our hands."

91 days for Taiho
45 for Kaga
42 for Ryujo
Chitose and Chiyoda due in 42
And 3 new CV: Kasagi, Aso, Ikumo in about 90 days.
the odds are growing daunting, but hope springs eternal.

I never knew that boiler cleaning was noisier than normal engine operations. They did not want tourists in the boiler spaces while they were doing it.

Hi pax,
None available I am afraid, all out in the empire moving stuff!

Hi Smokey

I have done 3 sorts of boiler cleans
One with air brush gear on a Type 12 DE, a water wash on a type 12, and chemical cleans on a Charles F adams class

In the last two cases, we still had to use the wire brush for the tough bits
Boiler cleans always suck.
And this is only internals, Zuiho really needs externals as well, but she aint going to get them.............

The air bruch is round (of course), and spins at a very high speed. You do not want to be in the mud drum if one is pushed through too far!

There is no cool morning breeze at Biak in this pre dawn.
Just the stillness, the crushing humidity, and literally the low hum of the mosquitos, mosquitos that cloud around the small oil lamps
Its light is weak, but enough to illuminate the ring of pale faces facing the commander.
The men are still, although at times the sound of mud sucking at their feet can be heard.
The commander speaks, weariness edges his voice, weariness and not a little excasperation.

Fuchida feels it, shares it. 20 Bombers killed in a week, and still they come.........

"The enemy are invading Wewak, thus explaining their interest in this piss hole" . The Commander smiles weakly.
"Even now, I am sure, they are coming. We will fight them, but this time not alone"

There are multiple bases north of Biak, and today they will add their wieght.
But some how, Fuchida thinks, its still going to be 47th's show.

The sky has yet to pink on the horizon as he settles in, all around the field you can hear the preparations in the still air, the clink of harness, the stamp of foot on wing, the quiet jokes and conversations.
On several planes, the steady whir, whir , whir of the hand fuel pumps...........and the unmistakable clang of the 44 gallon drum being dropped on its side.

It is a good time this, this time, the time before you fly. Even now, just that, flying can stir him.
But not today. today is going to be grim, and hard, and bloody.
But they are fighter pilots, and this is what we do................

The quiet is shattererd as the engines bellow into life, and now the world shrinks to just Fuchida, his stick, the cockpit.....shrinks until it fills the entire world, for a fighter pilots world is wherever he wants to go.
Taxi, bouncing, bouncing, it is so easy to break your beast here on the ground, so many things you can do wrong.
The strip is safety, of a sort.

47th take to the air, the now rising sun glinting on the great Tigers that adorn their planes flanks, for a moment, the eyes of the tigers glint, and sparkle, the teeth snarl.
Fuchida follows his commander, here, at last , the air is cooler, cleaner, alive, wings dance, and planes bounce almost joyfully.
10000 feet, 120 miles south of Biak.

And yes, above them, 60 plus zeros
There are Navy Geaorges about as well, but they are no damn good now, their spirit has been brocken.
Tigers will do it alone

"27 liberators appraoching, bearing 190"
The radio, it seems, works today..............
And there they are........sliding past to the west the bukas, still big and bad assed at 5000 feet.

Fuchida, fighter pilot, Son of a barsted engineer who he has barely ever seen, swings his fighter towards the enemy.
Fuchida, fighter pilot, ace, and killer.
Fuchida, mere man, doing his duty, attacks

The Tigers sweep into the attack, curving in with almost suicidal detirmination
Right now, in Germany, Galland has issued orders that any man who does nort press the attack is to be court martialled.
But this is Tiger Squadron, unthinkable to allow a companion to press in closer than you, intolerable to one honour.
Get in close, get in close and kill.

Fuchida sweeps in in his turn, world vibrating, the bomber growing, growing, wings, body, swinging turret, faces, a man in the side panel, 50 calibre...guns banging, bomber huge, a spray of red, gunner spinning away, past, stick savagedly down, rising in the seat, a stunning crash , smoke billowing, metal self destructing, prop trying to tear itself off...hands flashing for the belts, canopy slamming back, air blasting, pitching, out, out, I am out! falling, falling, so easy...pull the cord you fool!, the snapping, thumping KAWAP! of chute opening..........and silence

Swallow, and hearing returns..........poor bird, there she goes.............bang!

Fuchida floats down in the silence, as the battle fades to the north. Below, ocean, meeting jungle...........and beach.
A snarl fills the air, and a Tiger races past, banks, circles, waves.
Fuchida waves back, then concentrates on his landing.

The beach is soft, glorious.

But Fuchida is no fool. he spends 15 minutes marking the sand, then fades into the jungle.
The natives here, are more than restless.

(9 liberators shot down for 3 Tigers, 5 zeros)
Fuchida will be picked up by seaplane later this day, a fortunate occurance, japan is not usually this caring of its missing men
He will fill in his log.."Shot down"
And prepare for another day.

ssI-33 puts 2 fish into BB Alabama
Wewak falls, to the last man

20 weary pilots walk up Zuihos gangway.

Diogawa kneels on her deck, and kisses it.
"I will never abuse you again, old girl, never again."

Zuihos children have returned.

The boiler clean is completed, and now Minobe and the Charge are inside the steam drum conducting the inspection.
It is not going well, certainly not improved by the staleness of Minobes breathe, a mix of old whiskey, cigar and seaweed.
But in reality, that is the least of The Charges worries.
Officially, the Charge is not qualified as a boiler inspector, he is not an "engineer"
But of course, he has been crawling around in these steel tubes for more years than he cares to remember.
Minobe is the Engineer.
Charge MUST bow to his decisions, must conceed to his opinions. And right now, internally, he is violently opposed to Minobes opinions.
What inspections are meant to look for are pittings, wear, cracking in the areas where tubes enter the drum. Sometimes you even encounter lose ones (they surprisingly are easiest to fix, here "get a bloody big hammer" is half the solution)
Now, in the crazy shadows of the swinging torch, Charge sees tube with pitting after pitting, some, to his eyes with alarming wear .
"Sir, this one, what do you think?" (cannot you hear it in my tone of voice you mad buggar, this is terrible!)
"Yes, there is some pitting. Acceptable" ( I cannot go to Takeji with demands for a boiler re tube, not now, I cannot)
"Sir......" ( No, this is useless. Very well. So be it..........I just pray she makes it to the refit, if the gods are good.)
'Stop fretting Chief. I see they are bad..........I have seen worse. How many hours steaming to refit yes?. I have seen enough. Box her back up"

And with that the Engineer crawls to the Steam drum door, his great bulk almost totally blocking the light as he squeezes out.
For a minute Charge is plunged into dark.
A dark almost as deep as his thoughts.

Off wewak japans SS cover themselves with shame

In 12 hours, there are no less than 11 attacks launched against a wide variety of APs, AKs and LSTs, by no less than 6 different submarines
SS-I-70 kills a LST, hits another one
Everyone else misses...............
All the submarines are ordered home............there will be command changes.

Biak spends a quiet day, the airfield is fully repaired, and work continues on the support facilities. 47th sentai licks its wounds, and waits for the next round.

In Burma, Hosho and his division continue to rest and refit. The enemy heavies have begun a new blitz, 60 liberators smashing Chiang mai. But like Biak, the engineers swarm like ants moment after the nest has been upturned. The Bombers are now on longer supply lines than Japans, and Japan is detirmined to stay this time, alive or dead.

And finally, Zuihos Jills return, on barges, lifted aboard. Takeji's instructions about pulling the JIll apart and putting it back together again may now pay off. Regardless, the hangers now literally ring to the sound of work.
The allies are attacking at Wewak, if cantona is to stick to form, a thrust here in the Indian ocean must surely be expected soon.
Its the cantona way.

Christmas day

Zuiho's hangers ring to the sound of work.
In 48 hours, 11 of her torpedo bombers have been re assembled, and all but one zero is ready
Each plane is brought to the deck in turn and run to full power.
For obvious reasons, the pilots are fully involved.
Diogawa is riding in the cockpit, Uto on the wing, as another zero is raised up the elevator.
Uto leans in 'hell of a way to spend Christmas"
"Diogawa looks up, slightly bemused "Christmas, Japanese don't celebrate Christmas.........although we did have a Christain flying with us once"
"Oh, who was that?'
For a moment Diogawa thinks, his face screwing up into concentration " You know, I can't remember, I forget. He's dead anyway"

Uto does not answer, but the thought is there "dead, forgotten..........as i am sure we all one day will be"

They come again for Biak
20 strong this time, and yet again low and fast and hard.
Fuchida does not fight in this battle, in fact few do.

he is at 7000 feet when he spots them, low and hidden against the green,..........and behind them.
Bukas!
There are things some of us will never experince.
That slam of the throttle, that push into the seat, that stick over, the delightful way she just goes where you want her to go, wings vertical to the world, sun earth, sky, all at your control.
And today, all for nought.

They are too far ahead.
Even as the chase develops, the zeros swarm down, a buzzing, weaving frustrated attack.
Zeros fall, and so do the bombs.

Fuchida will land, guns not fired
And taste ashes.
