19-20 July 1943 ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Burma just got interesting again. A massive raid launched into the very center of my defenses at Mandalay. There is a tight web of interlocking bases here. More than 300 fighters are in range, and all were set to combinations of CAP/LR CAP to help each other. Unfortunately I realized later, there is no radar yet at Mandalay. While that made the defense less responsive than it could have been, there was still a stout effort by the groups in the area. This raid brought up an interesting discussion of our use of offensive LR CAP. We've decided to allow LR CAP with sweeps but in this case it also worked to support the bombing raids extensively. I'm not sure how to avoid this, but with Allied group sizes and the way the escorts (don't) work, some LR CAP is probably needed. It is not perfect for either side and provides unlikely outcomes, as is seen below. I've included all report information for this attack, with some notes about the Allied LR CAP affecting very late fragments arriving. I'm definitely seeing some differences in the new Patch. Many more fragments for big bomber raids for sure. So far I LOVE coastal routing though. SUBS: Lost another xAK to the Pargo near Chichi-Jima. SO PAC: On the 19th the CAP at Port Moresby again tangles with Hellcats sweeping. Same kind of results. BURMA: The main show happened in Burma. Mandalay was the target. A decent CAP arrived for the first sweep and the main bomber raid. The CAP was devastated by the first use of the P-47 (on LR CAP) by the Allies. The first sweep of Corsairs with 3 groups of LR CAP added in got a 4:1 kill ratio. Not a good start for the defenders. Next, the main bomber raid was nailed after the CAP broke through escorts and LR CAP, taking down mainly P-40s and 2E bombers.Several more large chunks came through, then the dribbles and drabs started going in. These should mostly have been unescorted but instead were supported by LR CAP that effectively let them get through. As a result many bombers were not destroyed, many planes were hit on the ground late and any planes set to interdict bombers at lower altitudes were continually lower than the LR CAP. This is the most difficult part for me. Once the LR CAP dives, it should stay down. Instead they get back to diving in and crush anything lower, like the 37 Nicks taken down today, the 31 Tojos set to 20k, or the 25 A6M5 at 20k. As many of these small groups got through to hit the fields damage also now is too great to risk flying fro this base at 71 field/56 service damage. Total plane losses for each side is right around 100 planes. We've sent a few messages back and forth and are trying to figure this out. What to do? I can't justify having an HR ruling out LR CAP altogether as the Allies would not be able to sweep or fly bombing missions without depleting their pools right away. But if we allow LR CAP the results of a raid against the strongest point of defense on the map is completely overwhelming and detrimental to future defense of the area. Another major concern or me is that there is no information for the altitude of LR CAP as there is for other missions. So it can't be combatted in any directed way, although I probably couldn't equal the altitude anyway. Any ideas? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR July 19, 43 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Port Moresby , at 98,130 Weather in hex: Light rain Raid spotted at 49 NM, estimated altitude 32,000 feet. I may try it as a bomber both against land and shipping targets as well. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
