ORIGINAL: jmalter well it's part of the art, that a movie's music puts you into the frame. a friend of mine was denouncing movies as 'manipulative art', but i was all "that's the point, innit?" i just lately saw 'Argo' w/ my twin-sister, we were both digging on the costumes, hair-styles, even the eye-glasses were shouting "1980!" & of course, the sound-track tunes were putting us right there. my fave movie music has gotta be from Kubrick's "2001", esp. as the Pan-Am shuttle makes rendezvous w/ the space station to the tune of Strauss' "Blue Danube" waltz. Pan-Am shuttle is beautiful, but it also makes me miss Pan-Am as well as reflect on the temporary nature of things. If you had told people in 1968 that Pan-Am would be gone before 2001 they would have said you were nuts. As for music of my teens, the first two minutes of "Dazed and Confused" is awesome. The hot rod slowly cruising around the school parking lot as Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" slowly builds, that amazing bass line playing over the credits, and then the first riff blasting out over the slash of orange day-glo paint and the bright, hopeful sunshine of the last day of school when the world was new, girls were bouncy, and gas was oh so cheap.
