The war movies, Battle of Britain and A Bridge Too Far are epics that I don't think will ever be created again. So much real equipment, so authentic looking, even without the special effects. I would include Waterloo in this list as well. There was something about the moves from that 70s style which is just so much more epic and compelling feeling than CGI fests that come out today.

1. Zulu

2. A Bridge Too Far

3. We Were Soldiers ... I like this one because it focuses on a geographic area in Vietnam that really never gets looked at. Everyone has this image of Vietnam which really is only accurate for the Mekong Delta, We Were Soldiers looked at a new area like had never been done. Also I give great credit to this movie for looking at the attitude for the war early on when the majority of the army involved as highly motivated and "professional". I think everyone has this image of a discontented army but no one really looks at what it was like for the first groups of soldiers.

I think a really compelling series would be a Band of Brothers style look at Vietnam from a unit that went into the war in 65 and maybe followed a few people through 2 tours, from say 65-66 and then 66-67 or 68-69. Just a few years made a HUGE difference in Vietnam. And even units were dramatically different from one another. Some units were highly motivated, others were more like platoon.

Some good ones mentioned above. Has anyone mentioned "Glory"? I found many of the scenes in that movie to be very well done and terrifying.

I just watched a good war movie.

    Memorial Day

    Storyline
Memorial Day, 1993. When 13-year-old Kyle Vogel discovers the World War II footlocker belonging to his grandfather, Bud, everyone tells Kyle to put it back. Luckily, he ignores them. Although Bud has never talked about the war, he finds himself striking a deal with his grandson: Kyle can pick any three souvenirs, and Bud will tell him the stories behind each one. Memorial Day not only takes us on a journey into Bud's complicated wartime past, but also into Kyle's wartime future. As the two men share parallel experiences in combat, they come to realize how that magical day on the porch shaped both of their lives.

The Longest Day - I really liked the German parts that had subtitles. The absolute confusion, anger, disgust that the German generals had when they realized what was happening. I have no clue how accurate it was, but I just liked it.

Yeah, Kelly's Heroes. I have to throw a comedy in there.

We Were Soldiers nailed it for the early Viet Nam period. I am/was fortunate to know guys who were there before we got 'involved' and the movie matches everything they ever told me about the pre-68 period.

There was a TV show in the late '80s called "Tour of Duty" that did cover the war a bit deeper by following a group of soldiers through their tour. The show only covered the lives of a few of the soldiers, but it was still a great show considering the time it was aired. Before America rediscovered its military peeps and started plastering Made in China "I support the troops" ribbons all over their cars.

Anyone can recommend some historic war movies other than WW2 or Vietnam. I have Waterloo, Gettysbug and Zulu. But there must be more .... Braveheart is also ok, but to much fictional elements.

I want to throw in some movies which are rarely named: Winter War (finish quite realistic and gritty), Bridge Of Remage (yes, it may be more action but has good charcters and German side is also potraied also not much herosism and patriotism), A Thin Red Line (not really a War movie in the sense but a drama about humanity with very good actors, good music, nice landscapes and also some good action!) Seems the last one is not liked that much by some people, I wonder why it is better than Ryan for example.

Of course the "ultimate" movies may be Das Boot and Apocalypse Now (even it the latter is also a movie more about humans than war like A Thin Red Line).

Being a fan of Akira Kurosawa's films I'd put his epic Ran on the list of War movies worth seeing. Although it is based on a fictional story it is still very good for fans of the feudal period in Japan.

Glory is a very good film for the American Civil War. It is based upon historical events. I also like the Charge of the Light Brigade which tells the story of the famous charge during the Crimean War. Master and Commander is a good film. It is based upon a work of historical fiction by Patrick O'Brian, but the book was inspired by actual historical events and people. I also like the TV series Sharpe. It is based upon a series of historical novels by Bernard Cornwell - but those novels were in part inspired by the memoirs of Rifleman Harris (Link). I also agree with OldSarge with regards to the work of Akira Kurosawa: very atmospheric.

    1. Cross of iron
    2. Stalingrad
    3. Thin red Line

Very hard to choose three. The list above aren't the best from a film point of view but more from a personnal point of view...I have about 5 or 6 other contenders some of which are far more accomplished as Films than the ones in my list..which are.

    Waterloo
    Das Boot
    We were soldiers
    Apocalypse Now
    Downfall
    Paths of Glory
    Come and See

    In no particular order:

Tora Tora Tora - Great sets, historically accurate, not a propaganda movie.

Would you consider To Kill a King a war movie? It had some war stuff in it. I thought it was pretty good. It is about the English Civil War. Very good. Very interesting.
