The Ormster is on a roll

Kormoran and Aquila are the correct answers. Kormoran would in theory start the game as one of the German convoy counters (although in practice she is available from the early thirties) hence the real life comment.

would Aquila really have ever made much difference in the always-near-land-Mediterranean? Did any CV accomplish anything there aside from being excellent targets for the enemy? [Which did accomplish great attrition on the Axis air forces perhaps].

#5 - Mutsu ? (didn't peek)

warspite1

Not Mutsu.

The reason that Aquila could have made a difference is that the Regia Marina (RM) would have had their own aircraft. The proximity of land was irrelevant, it was the fact that the Regia Aeronautica and the RM did not co-operate that was the Italians un-doing. Imagine what aircraft could have achieved at Calabria, Spartivento etc etc.

Did CV's accomplish anything in the Med? Damn right they did. There was Taranto and Matapan for two, not to mention the fact that the presence of Royal Navy carriers often forced the RM to withdraw. The RN were also able to re-supply Malta with aircraft thanks to the sterling work of their carriers.

ahhh, yes Taranto somewhat ended the war for the RM, good job there. I'll have to re-read on Matapan, I thought that was the CA vs CA battle. reinforcing Malta were the actions I was thinking of in that perhaps the Axis could have accomplished more losing their planes attacking Malta itself? I need to learn more on the Regia Aeronautica....I thought the Luftwaffe were the Axis champions of not-coordinating with their Navy.

When I command the RN in WiF I send all the British CVs to the Med, probably more than the real Brits did. And many a British player makes Pearl Taranto their first decision of the war, though they are looking for TRS, not BB, having that wonderful hindsight of history to guide them...

now I can peek at some other candidates for #5 then.

Matapan is a perfect example of what Aquila could have achieved.

The RN aircraft took out Vittorio Veneto (although she was subsequently able to escape) unlike the cruiser Pola, which was stopped dead in the water. When the Italians sent two cruisers to assist her, they were battered by RN battleships.

The point is a) the sole Italian battleship had to withdraw through being torpedoed, and b) the British surface ships were able to destroy the Italian heavy cruisers thanks to earlier damage inflicted by naval aircraft.

One of the advantages of carriers in the Med was that the British used them to transport aircraft onto Malta. That's not modeled very accurately in WIF; you can do the trick using carrier based air units but need to use TRS units to get land based air units onto Malta. It was a fairly standard operation in 1940 for the British to send a carrier (Furious comes to mind) to ferry aircraft from England to the Med.

In the game a carrier air unit is 1/10 the strength of a regular air unit,

So if a regular air unit were between 250 to 500 aircraft a carrier air unit would be 25 to 50 aircraft.

Most of the British carrier transport runs were for replacement not reinforcement.

HMS Pepperpot

Oops. I ment to write HMS Penelope that I know is the wrong answer since she was lost during the war. But I am at a loss of thinking of a light cruiser that fits.

The big clue here is no.4. What very famous engagement happened, outside the med, that involved at least one light cruiser?

Clue: So what did the RN catch a lot of, in the early part of the war especially?
Second Clue: My Grey generic counter is not the same type as my later blue one.
