I'm interested in modding the 3D combat units in Tiller's BGCW and BGNW to add more figures to the units in line to offer more realism to the game. My hope is to create a two-line unit with more figures than the standard stock one-line unit offered in each of the games.

What kind free software programs can you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

For free, I think paint.net is your best bet.

Thanks, simovitch!

I've seen your work and I'm very impressed!

At one time you had created a map mod for BG Waterloo to tone down the color scheme....do you still have that mod available somewhere? Failing that, can I do the same thing with the software you recommended?

Thanks!

I ran into a conflict with the link you provided and my antivirus program, so I downloaded the program from CNET.

I'm not allowed to post links yet, so that's the best I can do.

Yes, it's easy to edit the map bmp's. Lowering the 'Saturation' usually tones things down a bit.

Paint.net has most of the features you need. I use 'snagit' because it allows a lot more file management options and it's still relatively cheap, and I'm used to using it.
