What have you guys had the most luck with in fixing system damage on capital ships?

The manual says they have a chance at repairing damage at sea, but I've never seen that happen. Must be low.

I've also heard that the larger the port size, the greater chance of repairs. Does the number of other ships in port affect that also?

In one of my PBEM games, the Japs got lucky with a air attack and put a torpedo hit into one of my two precious battleships, and it's bad damage. I have to leave the ships at Lunga due to the major Japanese naval forces nearby that can come down at any time (including three battleships) and there are NO capital ships due to come down to me. So I'm kinda stuck -- can't move the ship to Noumea, can't send her back to Pearl, and can't really leave here where she is.

Well, this is a moot point now.

I put the BB North Carolina into Tulagi, both because it had a better port and hoping that it might escape notice by the Japanese, and doubled the CAP on her.

Mind you, these are still Wildcats (my one squadron of P-38's is way too busy escorting bombers attacking ships at Shortland) but they have been active for over six weeks, are well rested, and have good morale.

Did'nt matter. The Japs found her, attacked with only a dozen planes again, AGAIN burst through CAP three times her size, and put ANOTHER fish into the NC. Now she has to go back to Pearl for sure, leaving me in a criticaly bad situation.

I hope the new patch does something about the effects of CAP over ships, because right now, it sucks!

Don't worry your cap of 100 fighters just shot down my last attack. Cap effectiveness also has to do with quantity as well as fatigue, altitude and experience.

CAP is not a silver bullet or a guarentee of safety. Nor should it be.

There is a good reason that both the IJN and USN used anchorages outside of LBA range. There is always that possibility some will slip through.

Well, as I said in my first note, it's a 'rock and hard place' choice -- I either have the ships there and defend then from air attack, or I run the risk of the Japs coming down the slot with major surface forces and blowing away all my hard fought work in the last two (game) months. I believe Drex is doing the same thing, having his major units docked in Shortland to counter anything I may do. It's a face off. :) And if I could tell my bombers to go after those ships rather then all the AG's and transports, believe me, I would!

Put 'em on port attack. Ships sitting in port are sitting ducks for all bomber types.

Going back to the original question, how does one improve the chance of ship systems repairs? I had two CVs with minor damage, 7 and 13 to be precise. The one with 13 damage kept getting worse, so I sent both back to Noumea. Still nothing, so I put both in port. The one with 7 damage failed to improve, and the other slowly worsened to 17 systems damage. So, I finally sent it back to Pearl.

Needless to say, I'm a bit confused. Any suggestions?

Be patient.

I have left a CV with 20 damage in port and it took a month to get under 10. It is kinda of like the old adage "a watched pot never boils". Day to day it doen't seem to happen, but it will.

And I even sallied it out a couple of times during that month too.

Sent back to Pearl with 7??????

D@mn, if it is green, it's operating. And as the USN player, I don't ever seem to have enough operating carriers to afford that luxury.

Hell, I wouldn't consider sending beck with less then 20.

Improving chances of repair are based on port size, the larger the size, the "quicker" the repair. (quicker in quotes because on a daily basis, little change happens, particularly for big ships).

Were the taskforces "in port" or in a taskforce at a port"? If they are in port, they sys damage should slowly go away. If sys damage is increasing while in port - I don't know.

The smaller the ship, the quicker the repair. Damaged battleships recover very very very slowly.

Previous posts suggested that the number of ships in port doesn't matter.

I think SViking meant that he sent back the one with 17 damage. (Correct me if I'm wrong, SViking.)

I have a question for SViking. You say the SYS damage worsened in port. Was there also FLT damage or some other damage? I don't recall seeing SYS damage get worse in port, but FLT damage definitely does.

If the port is size <3, then you will accumulate more sys damage if you have high float and/or fire damage.

Repairs do occur at sea: floatation and fire damage (as long as they aren't too bad, and like all things, no guarantees). I don't believe sys damage is corrected at sea, though.

As others have said, larger ports repair "quicker" but if the damage is high enough (and that depends on the type and your imminent needs), don't count on BB or Noumea or Truk to make the wait worthwhile.

A size 1-2 port will not help correct damage, though, so a ship sinking will sink in one of these ports unless your ship's crew can manage the issue. I've seen far too many heavy floatation damaged ships sink in these ports -- heck, they sink in size 9 ports if bad enough!

Correct. The one with 17 damage went back to Pearl. The other I kept in Noumea.

There was no other damage to the CV. I suppose it is possible I forgot to actually place the CV with 17 SYS damage in port, while the other was in port. (They were in different TFs.) Even so, I'm amazed at how fast I went from 13-17 SYS damage on one CV, while failing to repair any on the other. Scary proposition for maintaing an operating fleet - though I'm not arguing the realism here. (i.e., I have no opinion at present as to whether this is realistic or not.)

Anyway, sounds like I need to just wait longer for repairs. I probably ran 2-3 weeks in port...at least with the 7 SYS damage CV.

If you had a TF at sea during bad weather (thunderstorms), I seen some ships pick up a couple of sys damage points in one turn.

So continuous ops in bad weather can rack up sys damage real quick.

The North Carolina finally made it back to Noumea. I checked her damage -- 55 system damage, 25 float. And all this from two lucky air torpedo hits! She could only make 12 knots so I sighed and sent her back to Pearl.

Time to reach Pearl -- 293 days!

I won't be seeing her again this game (sigh).

Now if only Pearl would send me the South Dakota to replace her....

Excuse me if I am saying something you know, but in general it is a good idea to completely repair Floatation Damage in port before sending a ship back to Pearl/Japan.

Floatation Damage repairs farily quickly in a reasonable size port, and since in and off itself floatation damage slows down a ship, it can have a significant effect on the return time of the ship, since it takes longer for the ship to actually make it back. 25 doesn't seem too high, but it probably increased the turnaround at least a bit!

Hi, unless the ship is in danger of sinking when it reaches Noumea/Truk don't send home before fixing the floation damage.
Flt damage once fires are put out will repair between 4-6 points per day ( no problem it will happen if in Noumea/Truk) This cuts down the time the ship will need repair once you send it home.
The time listed for a ship to arrive in Tokyo/PH is AFTER she is repaired. Add 14-22 days to that time for it to arrive back on map (if it is sent out the day it arrives back in PH/Tokyo) For ships going to PH also remember these ships get repaired on US West/East coast so alot of the time is travel to and from there.

But the float damage does'nt affect the speed of the ship one knot. For example, a my heavy cruiser Chicago has most of her float damage repaired, but because the system damage is still 98, she still has a speed of 0. Hence, it should'nt affect the speed of the ship in returning. So I thought, why bother? She'll go back at the same speed, let's get her going.

But a ship with 40 sys damage and 80 float damage, it makes a big difference in the return availability date.

Well, in this case, I knew she was'nt coming back. :) I also had hoped it would rush the deployment of the South Dakota and some destroyers (there's over 20 siting in Pearl). No dice.

That's what I said. :)

Drex has had amazing luck with me in this PBEM game -- and then he got those hits on one of my two precious BB's.

I know he has at least three BB's, four carriers, 12 heavy cruisers, and other minor ships.

The only thing that's saved me is the 200+ airplanes based on Lunga along with my two carriers.

I had a little luck also -- one of my PT boats got a torpedo hit on his battleship Haruna when it came in to bombard a month ago. He later confirmed the hit was so bad she had to go back to Japan.

Still, I've had the worst of it. :)
