Age of Steam

When battleships roamed the oceans...driven by coal and steam.

Requires ATG Version 2.11

Team game. Only one team wins.

Four human players in two teams of 2 (chosen randomly).
Four AI- players.

Order:
Human (Team A)
AI-
Human (Team B)
AI-
Human (Team A)
AI-
Human (Team B)
AI-

Human players may work together to elminate the AI, or go immediately against each other in a race for victory.

Formal alliances allowed with your teammate only. Tech and resource sharing. You may not ally or share with members of the other team. (You may choose to assist them informally in eliminating those pesky AI.)

Scenario set up:
XX-Large World
8 Players (4 human, 4 AI-)
Water World
Map Loop
Shroud
1 Town Start
Costly Research
Stone Age
Hidden Stats
Use Resources
Climate: Full Range
Continental Size: Small
Humidity: Normal
Geological Age: Ancient
Limited Initial Roads
Natural Coastlines
Fog of War
PBEM Protection
Passwords* (write them down!)
Hide Realtime AI

Random turn order determined through the now infamous Nomic Dice Server.

DropBox used for file transfer.

* You will be required to email your password to your partner. If you drop out or go missing, your partner will be called upon to email the password to your replacement.

Players signed up so far:
Sailing Guy
ironduke1955
hadley
kombrig

I will be out of town from October 20 through October 28. Turns will be delayed during that time.

This will be a slow developing game due to the "Costly Research" and the "Stone Age" settings. It may resemble the colonial expansionist age of the late 1800's more so than WW2. With AI- representing the third world ready to be exploited.

Count me in. Must say AI- at sea has a distinguished Naval record on par with Switzerland and Luxembourg.

Count me in as well. I like the idea of a naval scenario. It's been a while...

Can we play with hardcore production? http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3192786

If it´s possible count me in. I wish to test it in a large map.

Based on Webizen's assessment, I would suggest staying away from it. But I'll leave it up to the other two guys to decide. I would vote "No".

Greetings!

While waiting for Phil to return, I decided to see what the map could look like using the scenario set-up for "Age of Steam". Two observations...

1) That's a lot of H2O! I'm looking forward to the change of pace from large land battles.

2) The initial production for the first turn provides 6 trains. These are pretty much useless in this scenario. Land masses are really small. (Think
island chains.) Just thinking out loud, but is there anything else that we might consider using for initial production that would be more
useful? The obvious answer would be cargo ships, but not everyone's starting city will be a port, so that won't work. Suggestions? We'll
likely leave it as is... Just trying to fill the time till Phil returns...

Dice server results. (Inadvertently labelled "Desert War". These are the "Age of Steam" results.)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

# Sailing Guy, first listing
# ironduke1955, second listing
# hadley, third listing
# kombrig, fourth listing #
# Tied results for two or more players (unlikely) will result in all dice
# Highest result = Player #1; second highest result = Player #2, etc. etc.
# Player #1 and Player #3 are team mates.
# Player #2 and Player #4 are team mates.

No. of sides on every die: 1000
No. of dice for every roll: 1
No. of dice rolls requested: 4

Hi, guys!

On my last turn the game posted a message to the effect that I may be trying to copy the game file. This is not the case. This is what I think happened. I'm playing ATG on a MacBook that has its hard drive partitioned into an OS X side and a Windows XP side. Obviously, ATG is on the Windows side. When I complete my turns, I put them in the dropbox folder; however, for some reason, dropbox sometimes fails to connect to the internet and I don't know why. When this happens, I transfer the file from the Windows dropbox to the Mac dropbox, which doesn't seem to have this problem. The file then uploads.

The problem arises the next time I use Windows and the dropbox does connect. It ends up with two copies of the same turn, the one that didn't upload the previous attempt and a downloaded turn that comes full circle from my Mac upload. The game is seeing this as an attempt to copy the file. I suppose that if I delete the file from the Windows dropbox after uploading it via Mac that the problem may go away. I'll try to do this from now on. Sorry for causing any confusion, just trying to give full disclosure.

Happy Hunting! ~ Doug

P.S. ~ Turn to Kombrig.

I received a warning on loading my turn hence the wording. I have been warned about you. As the reason why I received the warning was explained at length in your previous post. I assumed (Assumption being the mother of all cockups) that you would get it.

Lot's of water...
Still looking for bad guys...
At least two players starting on islands without production ports.
(ie~ Can't build ships to get off the islands.)
Did I mention lot's of water?

Was this a mod of any kind? I saw mentioned resources were used to simulate coal consumption for your early ships correct? Very interesting concept but seems a little more land area might be an idea for the next try.
