Ross posted that he wanted challenge a player in UV and I was quick enough to reply and got the chance to show his aussie *** how we here in the North treat people who walk this earth upside down . ;)

So, after a few opening difficulties with Ross not being able to get my attachments we fired up.

I quickly took Lunga, Tulagi ja Buna in the first few rounds of play.
I'm especially happy with getting Buna as it can become a thorn that bleeds me if USN manages to ship enough troops there with Dakotas and build a base to launch air-attacks against my shipping that supply Lae. It's also the only base close enough to PM so that it can be defended assets stationed in PM. It's not critical, as IJN can take Buna with ease, but it is one thing more that has to be dealt with.

I also mined the shallow hex east of Lunga in case he'd try something there, and voila:

CA New Orleans
DD Russel
DD Morris

All hit mines on a fast-transport mission heading for Lunga/Tulagi. Lucky me. ;)

Also, Ross managed to slip elements of AA and ENG to Gili Gili where I landed some troops a turn ago. GG is still in USN hands, but not for long.

For reasons unknown to me, Ross launched few planes (pathetic!) against Lae trying to close down my airfield there.
To no effect as can be seen:

This is getting hectic! Lot's of air combat can be witnessed around PM and this turn Ross tried again to send troops along a FT-TF to Lunga. Luckily this was something I anticipated and I had a small suprise waiting for him:

--[CLIP]--
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/05/42

Weather: Thunderstorms

Night Time Surface Combat, near Lunga at 38,40

Japanese Ships
CA Myoko, Shell hits 8
CA Haguro, Shell hits 8
CA Aoba, Shell hits 2
CA Kinugasa
CA Furutaka, Shell hits 4
CA Kako, Shell hits 1
DD Shiratsuyu
DD Shigure
DD Yugure, Shell hits 4
DD Ariake
DD Akebono
DD Sazanami
DD Ushio

Allied Ships
CA Astoria, Shell hits 22, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
DD Hammann, Shell hits 7, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
DD Phelps, Shell hits 25, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Monaghan, Shell hits 1
DD Alwin, Shell hits 17, Torpedo hits 4, and is sunk

--[CLiP]--

What baffles me is, that I spotted Ross's TF first, my TF-commander was R.Tanaka but Ross managed to cross my T with his few ships inflicting lots of hits but luckily little damage!! CA Astoria also sank so DD Monaghan will be the only one returning home to tell the story. Ross also set up some base in the Solomon chain that seems to be flying something.

I'll have to correct myself on this crossing-the-T-issue. My TF-CDR was not Tanaka-san but some captain. This explains it.

After a few rather uneventful turns we are back with Action Jackson. Ross has his carriers hanging out south of the line Port Moresby - Gili Gili, and this has led me to beleive that he's brewing something. Gili Gili is and obvious target for any action the USN would take early on in the game. And my feeling of Ross being a sinister Aussie seems to be paying off:

He's not attacking Lae as it's _very_ well defended with numerous AA assets and a big CAP but he's trying to close down Rabaul. I say suprise is a big factor in any operation and if Ross feels he's going to take GG - well he's not going to get it cheap.

Yes my Recon of Lae tells me that you have a very good fighter force stationed there. Rabul has a very strong bomber force. Your Nells and Bettys worry me greatly. They already have shown what they can do with torps against my ships.

But with courage comes great risks and sometimes having to run the gauntlet of many bombers and fighters to take a base.

Ross still has his carriers hanging around south of the PM-GG line and he's assaulting the GG (L1) airfield with SDB's.

To make sure Ross doesn't get Gili Gili I sent a Bombardment TF consisting of 4 CA's, 3 CL's and 10 DD's commanded by R. Tanaka-san to finish off anything and everything at GG harbour.

In addition on losing a bunch of ships and troops Ross also lost Admirals Lee and Carpendier. My only loss was the already battered CL Tatsuta which was sunk east of GG by SDB's lauched in the morning by Ross'es CV-TF. Ross managed to land some elements of infantry and auxilaries in GG. Thease will be dealt with swiftly.

I now have secured GG for a while. I also have a firm hold on Lunga, Tulagi and Buna. The next pahse of offensive operations can be commenced after a some R'n'R (free sake at the bar!) for my worthy troops.

Drwho, am I reading this correctly that you did not engage his CV's at the Coral Sea?

And it also looks like you have transferred some air units to Lae from one or more of your CV's.

Very interesting. I'm not sure I agree with doing that, but it is a very interesting strategy. My only concern is, if now isn't the time to destroy his CV's, when would be? It sure isn't going to be when he gets the Saratoga, Hornet, Enterprise and Wasp as re-inforcements!

You have done well to kill admirals Lee and Carpenter, though. I salute you for that!

You read my game correctly. I did not engage Ross'es CV's with my own carriers because of the proximity of Port Moresby. I'm not capable as of yet to close down the airfield at PM fully, but I can keep it checked (30-40 damage) by continuously bombarding it with my air assets. Ross can have ~60 LR-bombers there with the range to attack my CV-TF if I move anywhare close to GG.

I'm fully confident I can sink Lexington and Yorktown when I catch them with my own carriers but if you put PM in the equation I feel that odds are not fully on my side. I've managed sink IJN carriers with bombers from PM against PBEM opponents so this is something I don't want to experience myself.. :)

On killing Lee and Carpenter: I'm play _very_ conservatively with my admirals. I always use captains for everything else but the most critical missions. A small slip on my side happened when I had some poor captain commanding my TF when Ross tried to move troops to Lunga. Ross had an admiral with his ships and managed to cross my T even when he was outnumbered six times with heavy cruisers and nearly tiwce with DD's. I sank him anyway but he scored some hit's, luckily with only minute damage.

I tried to find his CVs early on and came to the same conclusion that he has taken planes from them and keep them back. I am glad that we are playing 1 day turns because if he did send his CVs out they would make mince meat of mine.

After the combat phase when you see what ships are sunk you get a message saying Admiral he-and-he was killed.

I have no clue on what Ross was thinking about when he moved his CV-TF North West of Port Moresby. I'd never do that. Mario Valleé did that to me and I sunk both Yorktown and Lexington in an instant. This is not something you'd expect.. So I didn't expect it. So I got WHACKED badly.. ;(

I've found that the FOW is really misleading when it comes to drowned commanders. I've got a long list of all the capitol ships and commanders that my opponents think have been wiped out - when in fact they are all still afloat (even if some of the admiral's uniforms are shrunk and all of the ships are back at pearl).

Has Ross confirmed that he lost Lee and Carpendar??

I havent really checked to see if they are gone or not. Nothing I can do if they are now.

As to moving my AC TF up there, well I wanted to use the carrier bourne TBs and DBs to take out his supply ships that are in Lae harbour. But the weather was bad and they didn't take off. Thankfully the CAP was up and gave the boys on deck a real good air show.

Next turn the AC TF slipped away under the cover of darkness. Its along way back to it's base in Nouemea for refueling.

At least one thing was found by all this. My enemy can make good blunders. I must be ready for his next one. :D

I'm amazed you are letting all those F/Tainan expert pilots fly to their deaths prematurely in those crappy Claudes. Not that they won't die an honourable death in a Zero...:D

Now before you start running around and shouting that drwho is a lucky bastard take this into account:

a) Cotrary to what Ross said earlier in this thread, he didn't send his CV-TF to Noumea, but quickly slipt it to Townsville to get fuel.
b) The above was keenly monitored by the IJN.
c) If you keep hanging your TF around a certain spot (approx 7 hex S-SE of PM) you are asking for trouble.
d) Ross did the above.
e) 8 IJN subs hunting are bound to find the trouble mentioned.

Naturally the commander of SS I-17 get's sent to Tokyo for some major celebrations + decorations + a meeting with the Emperor.

My main prob. , "that time", was my previous night attack on Lea airfield did not work at all. Was it the same mess with you Ross?
I did not have this trouble in owr next game because Lea is still a base but not a airfield thank to my B-17. :p

I must say; Anssi Sallinen & Marc Balasko are the best players I have play so far. And I have play a lot

Mario: thanks for the compliment, you aren't a bad player yourself.

Ross has started to bombard Lae at night with Hudsons and Beauforts. Practically no results, 12 guys killed last night with no hits on the airfield.

Also looks like we are going to see some ground combat. Ross has steadily been moving troops toward Lae. He also moved a unit of infantry to Buna last turn so something is brewing also there.

And action for a change. I've devised by my own a most evil tactic for using AV's - I use them as convoy raiders. This raid wasn't really good as I usually score 4 to 5 bomb hits on about four ships per raid when using 3 AV's. For some reason my F1M2 Pete's didn't participate even when they ware well in range of the TF.

Still no F1M2 Pete's attacking.. I'm really starting to wonder why because previously (in other games) they did good damage when they attacked. My other AV was one hex away from Ross'es TF.
Jake's have 60kg bombs but Pete's have only 30kg, but they scored more hit's so the cumulative damage was greater.
