Hi,

Do Ardiluses (Ardili?) attack from a distance? Reason I'm asking: I was colonizing a planet and was zoomed in so you can see the planet. I got a popup saying my colonyship was being attacked by an Ardilus but it seemed it was still a good bit away (say at a distance 8 times the radius of the planet I was colonizing). So I send a fleet (also at the planet) to attack it. 5 seconds later a popup that my colonyship was destroyed. The Ardilus never touched the colony ship (not even close, as in a lot further away than the distance at which ships seem to start shooting at eachother). Is that how space creatures work; They sorta damage your ship from a distance? How do I protect my weaker ships from space creatures then? It seemed like there was no time to react (my fleet was practically touching the colony ship while the Ardilus was at the other side of my widescreen monitor).

They are up close and personal fighters. They hide, though, so I guess there may have been more than one. You get the attack warning once it attacks (as long as you know about it), so you know about the attack while it is far away.

Hmm, I considered there might have been more than one, too bad the message log doesn't record the specific names. I'm also thinking maybe I'm mis-reading something. The message I actually got was that a character on the colony ship had died because the ship was destroyed. The colonization was a success though. (I had a character on my colony ship because I thought he could travel with the colony ship to be stationed at the planet (I'm new to this game)). Maybe if you have a character on a colony ship and the ship is disposed after colonizing it's target planet, the character dies (because your not supposed to do that 'cause it's stupid)? and because I got a message just prior to the character dying that the colony ship was under attack from an Ardilus I assumed the ship was destroyed because of the attack. I'm going to test that.

Yep, that's it: if you have character on a colony ship then the character will die when the colony ship is done colonizing. The message will state that the character died because the ship was destroyed. Guess migration is pretty tough at those new colonies.

As far as I know, characters travel in invisible vessels, until reaching their target, apart from troop generals that work as a kind of unit. They can also be killed in some other cases, like when bombarding the colony they are at.

Yes, I think I understand how it works now: You don't transport characters yourself (except in a way in the case of fleet admirals who obviously travel with the fleet they're assigned to). Thanks Bingeling.

To answer your question though, Ardili DO attack from anywhere in a system. They simply teleport from where they are to your ship. Much like your ships warp inside a system to their targets. You get the warning as soon as the Ardili target you.

This is a little OT, but is there an effective way to defeat Silver Mist? I lost an 11 ship fleet of cruisers, destroyers and frigates to what looked like just one Silver Mist. It wasn't even 50 percent damaged when it took out the last ship in my fleet.

Tons of armor and close-up weapons of some kind? Stand-off don't seem to help.

I've successfully dealt with other creatures, but not these.

Maybe just avoiding them is the best strategy.

Carriers, lots of carriers. Ion weapons are supposed to work, but the best is having them chase fighters.

Adding a few other ships sporting some ion guns never hurt as well, of course.

Keep in mind that the Silvermist are among the hardest target. An 11 ship fleet is not much against other top targets unless you run some overpowered custom designs at end tech.

Avoiding can be a good idea, I am quite sure they patrol an area (probably a sector-ish size).

A competitor of mine ended up spreading to a cluster I coveted... and I couldn't get a foothold. A silvermist showed up, and destroyed a couple mining stations and a listening post-

then his colonies started vanishing.

You can transfer any sort of charatcter to any sort of ship or base. If the ship or base is destroyed then the character dies. I suspect the game trated your colony ship as having been 'destroyed' when it arrived and founded the colony.

I use a cruiser fleet of 8-16 ships each sporting as many ION cannons I can pack in and power up, usually lose 3-6 but kill the damned things.

Expect various competitors to lose a lot of fresh colonies in that area until the Silvermist is dead...

If you plan to colonize that cluster (after killing silvermist), i could be an idea to have colony ship ready nearby to hit the targets first. Or just colonize and put silvermist busting fleets as defense at each colony. That takes some forces, though.
