Surprisingly well illustrated / photographed images of PH raid from Japanese newspaper.

ETA: Note wave 'rings' from torpedo impacts. Also note gout of fuel oil into PH from stricken battleships.

Wow! Where did you see this? Looks like a museum style display. Any idea what the headline was?

Why, at the "Pacific War Museum" in your lovely home state, Cribtop. Strongly recommended.

any idea of the date this newspaper was printed?

nowadays we can watch live video (such as AA fire over Baghdad), and the military can release "gun-camera" video within hours. so i wonder how many weeks elapsed between the PH strike & the publication of these photos in Japanese newspapers.

for that matter, how many weeks elapsed before USA newspapers published photos of the devastation at Pearl?

just this last 12/7, the Washington Post published an eyewitness article that had been suppressed by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/honolulu-after-pearl-harbor-a-report-published-for-the-first-time-71-years-later/2012/12/06/e9029986-3d69-11e2-bca3-aadc9b7e29c5_story_1.html

IIRC, jmalter, this was published within a few days of the attack. Don't recall the exact date-perhaps one of the Japanese readers on the AE site can provide that from the image?

It reads Jan.1st ,1942.

The national flag at right upper corner implies New Year's Day, the national holiday.

...how come the pictures are 90 degrees rotated from the text???

Japanese is read from top to bottom. Their books are also read completly otherwise since they start on the, for us, last page.

I had the good fortune of knowing an editor of the Japan Times back in 1992. He let me into the morgue one day and of course one issue I looked up was December 9, 1941. Japan Times, being English, was a bit easier for me to read than say the one above. It would be good to revisit some day.

Cheers,
CC
