Uhggghhhhh!!!! While at my local Electronics Boutique (yes, UV for sale there:) ...new packaging looks great), I saw HoI on the shelf. Purchased on impulse since I wanted to treat myself for Xmas and the fact I really enjoyed Europa Universalis. I'm not sure what is going on but I thought this was supposed to be a decent game. It is a toy at best and is not very entertaining. I'm really disappointed. It lasted on my hard drive less than 24 hrs.

Thankfully, Matrix is not in the business of producing this kind of junk.

I had the same experience. I never got past the tutorial. UV is just to good and intriguing to settle for second best.

HOI's research option is thrilling though! Best I've ever seen in any game. The AI isn't very good though, but if you play a multiplayer game, then it's another case.

It's also essential to install the patches, the first 2 improved the game a lot and Paradox is usually very quick and good at issuing patches. That they almost released a beta version game is another case altogether.....

Turn based grognard level WWII strategy as made by Matrix is by far to be prefered though:D ...but we can all need a break now and then to be reminded of the excellence of what we always return to :)

Have to agree. HoI has WAY too much micro-managing for a "real time" game. Now if it were turn-based, and you could play it by e-mail, then maybe.........

I installed the patches before playing. Must have been real bad initially...

As for the research tree, looks great but makes little sense at this point. Just for "fun" I tried Canada in 1936-48 scenario. The game assumes every country researches everything buy themselves, there is NO interaction aside from some master/dog options which were supposed to have gone the way of the dodo years ago. Trying WW2 with that game engine just does not fly....at least not yet and not without a hell of a lot more rethought.

You should take a close look at some of the HOI mods - especially those made by Bolt and the Federalist

HOI is really not perfect but AFAIK, it is still the best WWII global simulation - even if there is not really a lot of competition :D (hint for Matrix) - and I believe that the next patches will really improve the game.

I have both HOI and Strategic Command, if want a fun , simple and easy game , along the lines of Hasbro's Axis and Allies this is just too good too miss. Probably too simple for most here, but for some reason i found it extremly addictive.

Playing Canada.

HOI sure has a ways to go (aircraft carriers are semi-useless) but is not all that bad. I enjoy playing it.
Paradox has as good a follow up on their games as 2by3/Matrix (v1.01 was out the same day as the game was in stores).
There is quite a bit of micro-management but you can pause the game at any time and give all the orders you want. Those of us who were raised on board games will find the continuous-time a bit frustrating, but If you want a global strategy WWII game what choices do you have. You just have to have the frame of mind to take it as a game and not get too involved with details (since it is global strategy).

BTW - just kidding about Canada - its a great place to visit and the people are very friendly.

Ditto. Loved EU and EU2, but can't seem to get my teeth into HoI. I think it is a case of the wrong game engine for the topic and scope attempted in HoI.

Again, check out the Mods. They do a lot to improve the game. Also play the 1939 scenario. It cuts a lot of the preptime down and just throws you into war.

The game is not for everyone, and on paper I would say its not for me either. But something about it made me play it until I "got it". After that, I have to say the game delivered one of the most addictive intense experience I have had to date. And I own over 600 PC Games, and if you count Consoles, well over 1000.

There are some weak points, but give it another try, serious try, and you might find yourself addicted.

I don't think you have to like one game or the other, they aren't mutually exclusive.

However, I did choose not to purchase HOI after reading the forums over there for awhile. Just my choice- I'm sure many people like it, it didn't sound like my cup of tea, however.

UV is much more to my liking.

I do have to thank HOI for one thing, however. I learned of UV's existence on the Paradox boards, when one poster held it up as the standard for realistic wargaming. Curiosity piqued I tracked this website down and after 2+ hours of reading I set out into the teeth of a winter store to drive 45 minutes to my local EB to get my hands on a copy.

And I've been playing it ever since.

Well, I'm still having fun with HOI, though I spend more time playing UV. The global scale of HOI is appealing, as is the tech tree. Bolt's HOI mod makes the game much more challenging. All in all, I'm glad I bought it. But it's not in the same league as UV.

There ya go! I think a brand new version of the mod came out today.

As far as the game goes I'm not as dissapointed as most of you guys. Beneath the clunky interface, poor AI, and heavy micromanagement at times I see a hell of a lot of potential in this game. With Paradox's history of following up on their games I think this will be a great one. Its too bad it wasn't great when it was released.

It took me a while before I "got it" also. But because I liked EU and EU II so much I just had to give it a try. Now I play it while waiting for PBEM turns of UV to come in.

I got it a few days after it came out - have decided to stop playing and put it back in the case for 6 months and see if they can finish it.

i decided same as you. i was excited when i heard a WW2 version with all the research stuff came out, because i played EU2 quite often. but, the price of the US version is to high over here, so i went to their forum to see, when german version will be out. and after reading some posts there i think it´s much better to wait till february for the german version. perhaps then will patch no.3 be out and improve it to playable level....

I'd love to get addicted to HOI...but I've never yet been able to complete a game due to CTD's. I've been playing steadily throughout the entire holiday, and am about to (regretfully) trashcan it as a waste of time.

After reading the Matrix forums about a Paradox game (a paradox in itself, I would imagine), I decided to investigate this Hearts of Irongame that has been touted "the greatest wargame in the galaxy" or something like that.

Read the Strategy First forums for over two hours, read some dang cool AAR's, read about the pro's and con's, read some reviews on other websites. Synopisis: A really interesting game that I may possibly pick up after about six months more of much needed patching. IF that happens, this baby could be a contendah on my hard drive.

Well maybe if you had played the game, you might actually have something useful to say?

As it is right now, the best you can do is bring up other peoples points...
