I always wondered if WASD controls could be incorporated into DW. Apparently StarDrive will have manual control of ships (if you choose to play it that way) so you can control one ship as if playing an arcade game.

Now we know that one of suggested ways to play DW is to play as a captain of a ship and leave everyhting else on automatic.

Imagine if you are playing DW as a captain of a ship (so leaving eveything on automatic) and you build yourself one powerful ship and then go around galaxy working as a mercenary, pirate or trader. So instead of just clicking with a mouse on your enemy we actually take a control of ths ship with WASD and use specific keyboard buttons to fire lasers, missiles, ion cannons, rail guns, etc.

For me at least, this would be fun way to play DW and explore huge DW galaxy.

Maybe with Shadows expansion this 'captain of one ship' gameplay could be expanded more. Lets say we play a space-only race. So you control one ship and you meet an empire. So now when negotiating with them they offer you contracts. They can range from destroying enemy's flagship, gas mining base, resort base, trader ships, etc to assassinating admirals, etc.

So make that 'captain of one ship' gameplay a little bit more like X-terran conflict/Elite type of gameplay, while in background we have all the other empires doing their own thing and fighting each other.

That actually sounds like a cool detail to add to the game. It could also be combined with a special character type, the "hero captain", you know, a Captain Picard type captain who goes around doing... erm... heroic stuff for his faction. Then we're talking basic RPG features that I do think would work well within this game's frame anyway. Players who don't want that could just leave it all on automate, just like with the rest of the game.

When thinking about it, in a way, that's already doable. Just place an admiral on your chosen Enterprise and see him go around and do the cool stuff, but with the WASD controls you suggest, it would indeed feel a lot closer and perhaps more of an action-experience too.

Yeah, a hero captain character would be great. I would play in that mode for sure.

Yep I have it :). But I think DW 'captain mode' would a great way to play the game, especially with DW's 'alive' galaxy running in the background.

A better option is to play Drox operative.A game system designed for that experience.

Since they are updating the ground combat, I think it would be nice during invasions if there was an option to control one of the soldiers.

That arrow texture cost matches DistantWorlds whole budget.

adding wasd to ships would be easy, its just a matter of coding the input and checking a condition.

several checks, are you piloting a ship? yeh? Which one? then allow the controls to control that ship, if not....well "return" :)

There is nothing hard about adding that functionality, what will be the question, is the gameplay of it....
