Hate to bother anyone with this basic question, but I'm trying to add research labs to my starting spaceport and can't seem to make it work.

I have the money and resources. I tried designing a medium spaceport with upgraded labs (10 each energy, weapons, hitech) with the right hab and life support. However, I couldn't get my existing station to retrofit or upgrade to it.

Would appreciate any help.

Hmm, not sure what the problem might be from your post.

What I do to retrofit a space port is:
1) Create the design I want and save with a name different from existing designs
2) Open the ships and bases screen
3) Select current spaceport, click retrofit button, choose new design by name from list (might have to scroll down), confirm and pay money
4) Wait for my workers to get busy.

Was your problem with step 3, ordering the retrofit (can be done from other places as well)?
Assuming you ordered (and paid for) the retrofit is the job waiting in your (planetary) build queue?

Just a couple of stabs in the dark.  If you provide more detailed information of what you did, or tried to do, in ordering the retrofit it might be possible to provide better assistance.

I think the problem is with step 3 - when I hit the retrofit button, I don't see any "upgrades" to select from a list. I'll try to rename it and see if I get a list.

I'm going to retry again and see if these four steps work.

Thanks for the advance,

After you created your new design, did you "save" it?

Hitting the retrofit button wont give you a list, it will just upgrade the current spaceport to the latest design of that size. To get a list select the space port, hold control and right hand button to bring up a list, move to retrofit and select small, medium or large spaceport designs.

Just to add more Research Lab to a space port isn't an improvement for the AI. That's possible why you can't retrofit over the Ship/base list.
You need to select the Space port and go back to the Main view screen, and use the Right click menu, and select then the Retrofit option, where you can select all possible buildable Space Port design.

Thanks everyone.

It appears that the problem was WHAT I renamed the new spaceport design. When I renamed it, the list appeared and I could retrofit it.

For whatever reason, when I just gave it the name Medium Port, Labs it would not appear on the list. When I renamed it MSP - MK3 Labs it was added to the list.
