Troops take forever to train, cost a fortune in upkeep, and then there's shipping them. It's even worse if you're on the defence. And yet somehow homeworlds always have vast amounts of troops. Robo-troops are no help, as despite being called 'elite' in tooltips, are weaker than even the worst combatants.

Is there any advice that can be given to make invasions less troublesome? Some thing I'm missing?

Troops gain experience (=strength) in combat.  So one possible strategy is to max out a couple of troops early game (hello independents ), stash them somewhere safe and then build cloning centres.  Means you pump out troops which are 2-5 times as strong as green recruits, depending on your race.

Also good bonuses from leaders help a lot.

But I'm not a big invader.  Some Mortalen will probably give you a much better answer soon...

Edit: also remember that troops fight better in their native environments...

As feelotraveller says, cloning technology will give you very strong troops so is worth getting - your strongest unit is cloned, and all races have the same upper strength limit IIRC.

Keep a very few large armies together rather than many small ones. Your enemy cannot be strong everywhere, so concentrate your forces and invade with overwhelming numbers. If you find your armies in a fair fight, you didn't plan it properly!

If you do have only a few big armies, ensure your invasion ships have plenty of fuel capacity to move round your empire to where they are needed.

Shadows is re-working ground combat so hopefully some things will be easier now.

Bombardment isn't me. I like to be nice-my favoured race is the Securans, which gimps me badly as they(According to stuff here) have some of the weakest troops in-game. So the peace is difficult to keep, and when war comes you can't resist.

A particularly interesting start had three races have their homeworlds right next to each other. No-one could make anyone budge since all we had were homeworlds, and relations soured quickly since on of them was the Ikkuro.
