This weekend just passed I was visiting my late wifes family, and had the joys of browsing through some of her grandfathers war momentos from his time in India.

He had an album full of photographs of his time there, mainly based at RAF Ranchi, with some excursions to Calcutta, Darjeeeling and up into the hills (Chakrata IIRC).

He was ground crew/mechanic and mainly work on Beaufighters.

I would have loved to have scanned some, but the album is rather fragile and it would have been too risky.

Fascinating family future heirloom, which will keep those memories alive for a long time I hope.

He had a very different wartime compared to her other grandfather, who was captured at Singapore. He never talked about his experiences with the family, and I mean never.

My paternal grandfather spent WWII in India, he was a mjor in the army. I have no idea what he actually did though.

My maternal grandfather was a REME mechanic and captured on the retreat to Dunkirk.

Did he keep a journal or other written history?

No, and we looked through all his effects just in case.

He occasionally got together with some of his friends from the camps. Presumably they talked amongst themselves at that time, but not with anyone else.
