I am considering building a new computer. Has anyone had a change to experiment whether there's any issues in playing JTCS under Windows 8?

I would think not but then again you never know...

Personally I would stick with Windows 7, you could always upgrade to Win 8 in the future...enjoy your new computer!

I would need to know which OS version to buy for the new rig though. Would hate to pay M$ twice...

I would purchase the Windows 7 Professional Edition, here is a link that you can use to compare:

Thanks for the comparison data. I am trying to choose between W7 and W8 though :)

I have Windows 8 Developer version build 9200 and it doesn't work. The main game screen is just white even in compatibility mode.
I'm sticking with W7.

Clearly time is running out for this game. Matrix really needs to look at a Windowed version because you can hold off on Windows upgrades for only so long...

Bummer :(

Oh well, it seems the Windows 8 upgrade would need to be made to Modern Wars before it is released, and hopefully there's enough resources at Matrix to implement changes to JTCS 1.5 as well...

Well, maybe the retail version will work...not sure how different my 9200 build is from the soon to be released version.

Just got a new installer from Tech support. Game installs and works beautifully in WIN 8. Recommended they replace the older installer. Great game!

Are you guys running JTCS as-is?

I have no problems playing a scenario. I have no issues with scenario tools if I have only one window open.

But I noticed if I say have Scen Editor open, then decide to quickly tweak themap with Map Editor, the Map Editor works fine but upon returning to Scen Editor it has become distorted and closing and opening it again is the only option to fix the view.

In addition to my primary Windows 7 development system, I have

  • a dual-boot Windows 7/Windows 8 test system (which, incidentally, also runs a virtual Linux web server -- three systems in one!)
  • a dual-boot Windows XP/OpenSUSE Linux test system (backup web server under Linux; boot into Windows XP for -- so far unsuccessful -- CS tests)

I must confess that I haven't yet tried running recent CS builds on the Windows 8 test system.

Although other members of the dev team report no problems running recent CS builds on Windows XP, I am unable to run those recent builds on my Windows XP test system.

You may or may not know that Microsoft is finally, no reprieve, pulling the plug on Windows XP support next spring. (Windows XP end of extended support is April 8, 2014. See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/lifecycle.) This makes iffy future formal, guaranteed support on Windows XP for CS 1.05+, Modern Wars, and all future games in the Campaign Series. Might work, might not, hit or miss -- on Windows XP.

Sorry to break the bad news to you, folks, but there it is. If Microsoft will no longer (extended) support their own obsoleted OS version, how much less can we provide (guaranteed, formal) support on same?

When I recently rebuilt the above Windows XP system, I was unable to access Windows Update for the normal, post-install patching procedure. Instead, I had to hunt down an obscure Microsoft web page with special patching files and procedures. Since then, I discovered a new site, Microsoft Update, where the normal Windows update procedures -- for XP -- have again been made available. But why don't recent builds run on my XP system? Can't really say. Must be an XP patch or driver issue. (And wouldn't you know it, the error message on failed game launch is cryptic and basically useless for diagnostic purposes.)

The point being: If the Campaign Series Lead Programmer can't (yet) run new CS builds on his Windows XP test system, how can he provide adequate support for CS on XP? (Again, this appears to be an XP patching/support issue, not an issue with the builds themselves, since other dev team members report successful use on older, not-recently-rebuilt XP systems.)

Of course, Campaign Series 1.04 and before will continue to run just fine on Windows XP, 7 & 8.

Bottom line, for future updates and games in the Campaign Series:

  • Windows XP -- questionable support; the game may or may not run, will try to make it work for me personally (so that I can support it), but no guarantees
  • Windows 7 -- fully supported
  • Windows 8 -- fully supported
  • future Windows versions -- fully supported

Oh, and if anybody is wondering:

  • Linux -- under WINE, maybe (as a Linux devoteee, I will spend some time to addressing the compatibility issue, but it's far from highest priority)
  • Mac OS X -- nope!
  • iOS, Android, etc. -- fat chance!

Worked for me a while back on Ubuntu with Wine. The highlights around units turned to blocks of color. I suspect the 8 bit graphics.

Never any problems with XP SP3 or 8 but I don't use the editors.

I had some graphics issues with W7 64bit that were resolved by the Disable Desktop Composition option alone. I did not need to have XP SP3 mode or anything then.

W8 (I have 64bit version) does not have the same option in the property info box. I tried some combinations but they did not seem to do the trick. Perhaps one of you W8 guys could fire up the Map Editor and Scenario Editor simultaneously, and see if you have the same issues.

As long as I have only one window open I have no problems. Then when I open the second window it works OK too, but when going back to original window it has become distorted. In W7 redrawing the window was enough, like jumping from 3D normal to 3D zoom-out and back. In W8 I need to close the whole app and open it again.

Mystery solved! It so happens that I just needed to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (also its SP1) on that Windows XP system. Doh!

Okay, so now I can run my CS/MW builds on my Windows XP test system. Although that improves prospects for informal support, it still doesn't change my earlier warnings about iffy long-term formal support for running CS/MW on Windows XP.

Your perilous future on Windows XP

Microsoft warns Windows XP users risk 'zero day forever'

Expect to see lots more articles like these in the next several months.

Although our recent alpha & beta test builds of Modern Wars and the Campaign Series run perfectly fine on Windows XP, it's a good bet that I personally will be pulling my Windows XP box(es) off the Internet come April 2014. And if Windows Update is no longer accessible to patch rebuilt Windows XP systems, a good bet also I'll be retiring my Windows XP system(s) altogether.

Bottom line: After April 2014, you run MW/CS on Windows XP at your own risk, and with no formal, guaranteed support.

Because I'm sure Microsoft would never try scare tactics to boost sales of newer OS's at hundreds of dollars a pop!! Pisses me off, I can't afford a new freakin' OS, bastards...

Oops! Sory. I didn't mean to pile on.

I sympathize with both sides to the question.

Anyway, as we know, MW/CS run fine on Windows XP, and should continue to do so. Maybe that's the real bottom line here.

I jumped on the $40 upgrade from XP to 8Pro on day one release. Most people that don't want to spend money on an old box should dual boot with Ubuntu for most things and just use XP for offline games that don't work in Wine.

Precisely what I have been doing for quite some time now.

Ubuntu does all of my normal computer operations including totally secure online business.

XP, from which I never browse the internet, handles the majority of my gaming.

It is a pity that more devs don't make games natively for Linux, I would say fair well and adieu to Microsoft once and for all.

It should run OK on W7 64bit, that was previous platform as well.

I had a Map Editor issue that was resolved with Disable Desktop Composition property, otherwise it ran very smoothly with no issues.

You need to download a latest version of Arkady's Unit Viewer for 64 bit environment, if you want to use it.

JTCS tested on http://business.panasonic.co.uk/computer-product/toughpad/ut-mb5 and I encounter some glitches, I'll play with it and report if I succeed to display game correctly.
