Status: offline 		Well tried to install spwaw on to a Linux 8.0 server and it seemed to install fine but I can't find it on the system. any clues?:D

Installed WINE 20020228 in SUSE 8.1 LINUX box....

Installed SPWAW 7.1...

kick off mech.exe

all's well until I need to provide keyboard input - effectviely the keyboard is not recognized....

Has anyone managed to get SPWAW running on LINUX via a recent version of WINE?

Anybody seen this no-keybaord issue?

Any suggestions?

MS Windows is not a long-term solution IMHO - sooner or later they will render SPWAW inoperable with a new WINDOWS edition and I want to get on LINUX before that happens...

Status: offline 		Seeing as SPWAW runs like a clock on XP, I have difficulties figuring how MS could screw it up now... I mean, that would have happened a while ago. :rolleyes:

Remember that this is, basically, a DOS game... how well does that work with WINE?

Yes, I have seen this. I'm running wine version 20010731 under RedHat 7.2. In the Wine config file ensure that the following lines are set as below (Note the ; which is a line comment marker):

; Allow the window manager to manage created windows
"Managed" = "N"
; Use a desktop window of 640x480 for Wine
;"Desktop" = "800x600"


The 'Desktop' switch determines what size window the wine application is launched into. Commenting it out (as above) means that SPWaW will appear on the top corner of (all) your desktops and not in a window (not ideal but SPWaW was designed under a non-multitasking Operating System). It is recommended to resize your desktop to 800x600 to prevent you scrolling off the edge of the game (which is exactly what happens under windows - remember how the screen mode is set to 800x600 when you run SPWaW).

Running SPWaW in a linux window on a larger desktop works really well until you need keyboard input (like confirming end of turn which has no button). Control-C in the shell running Wine ends an unresponding SPWaW.

All of this is explained in the possible problems area of the Sinner's website so kindly pointed out by Resisti.

Something which is not there but I noticed was that you should avoid clicking off the game area when SPWaw is running as I could not re-focus mouse or keyboard input back onto the game - more reason to resize your desktop to the game area (another legacy from DOS I suspect).

Belisarius:

It runs like a dream. SPWaW running under Linux is indistinguishable from running under windows. As SP3 runs an emulated DOS environment under windows, an emulated DOS environment under Linux works just as well. The only problem I have found is that loss of keyboard focus as described above.

Thrashman:

By this I assume you mean you can't see it to run it.

Open a bash shell and type the following:

cd /where/you/installed/SPWaW
wine mech.exe

If you want an icon, use your KDE/Gnome menu editor to create a menu entry to run the wine command listed above after setting the working directory to your SPWaW installation directory. Works like a charm for me.

Once again check out the Sinner's page, it's all there!! :cool: :cool:

Thanks for responding!! I will take closer look at my setup based on your suggestions - I had tried to implement Sinner's suggestions as closely as possible but I have this amazing capacity for stumbling on sort of mundane things....

(Like in my first LINUX O/S attempt, I had to call a friend to find out that 'startx' was the command that got the whole hting rolling from the CLI....)

Anyways, I''ll check - also plan to run debugger and loaddll to see if I can spot anything in the sequence...

BTW: if I use an editor to make changes to the config file, once I save it, do I have to recompile or any other step to make sure the changes are picked up??? It might be that simple - my config might be right but the old config gets picked up maybe???

Thanks for your help - I am so close - the screen looks beautiful and everything works (ignoring the sound which doesn't work properly on my Windows system either...)...

And, frankly, the 'why' is part 'why not' and part a certain lack of trust in the folks at Microsoft...

or actually I trust them to look after their own bottom line and something like support for older games such as SPWAW will get dropped like a bad habit if the profit margin goes negative...

For me, open systems is my long-term bet.

It's just the unix failsafe kicking in to force social interaction onto geeks who haven't sign the light of day, let alone another human being, for quite a while.......

No, nothing as exciting as that. Just make the change with a text editor and restart wine. I have at least six to chose from, Kate, Advanced Editor, Kwrite, Vi and if I really want to show off, Notepad from my Windows partition (running under wine). There are undoubtably more scattered about my installation, Linux is like that.......

Same prob...full screen, no keyboard, and desktop messed up in terms of sizing to screen...

then removed comment:

; Use a desktop window of 640x480 for Wine
"Desktop" = "800x600"

And got a SPWAW window, keyboard input, and desktop remained unaffected.

Victory is declared. The media has been alerted.

The 13th Armored Penguin Division is moving out....
