Kwajalein was attacked by 32 X PB4Y who did moderate damage to the port and caused some secondary explosions, some of which were fuel tanks.

The IJA 21st Division, at Gili Gili was hit by 5 X A-20G and 3 X Spitfire VIII for negligible casualties.

On Tulagi the Japanese were battered by another Allied attack that resulted in extremely heavy losses for them while the Allies had virtually no losses. There is no more organized resistance on Tulagi.

Pilots of the Flying Deuces knocked down some Japanese transports over Cagayan. Unfortunately for Stick he wasn't on station when the intercepts were made.

They big brass and the President then discuss Europe and the situation in the Pacific. FDR is assured that all operations in the PTO are pretty much on schedule give or take a few days. Admiral King stresses that even though the might of the USN is huge the ships can't be everywhere at once.

Slim once again exhorts the lads to dig deeply as they continue to press closer and closer to the Japanese positions defending Cagayan.

Gene has the day off today and it's a good thing because he got to bed at a very late hour. He watched his drinking though and though he did get a buzz he was careful not to get drunk.

Steve has kept his BBs tucked away and rarely do they pop out for a raid. I hope that future ops are so close to home that the IJN's hand is forced.

The SS KXVI was roughly handled by 10 PCs 85 miles N of Singkawang. The sub will make for port due to moderately light systems damage.

Kwajalein was raided by 24 X PB4Y for moderate port damage, a secondary explosion and light casualties.

Gili Gili was bombed by 86 X B-24D and 3 X Spitfire VIII. The airfield took very heavy damage, there were some secondary explosions and personnel losses were moderate. The IJA 21st Division was attacked by 9 X A-20G Havoc and 5 X Spitfire VIII. The unit had light losses.

Rabaul was hit by 86 X B-24J for moderate damage to the airfield and port, a couple of secondary explosions were noted and casualties were moderate.

Transports in the Cagayan area were intercepted by roving Allied fighters.

The Missouri passed to the south of Guam en route to Ulithi today. Bill expects to rendezvous with the bulk of the fleet there.

Troops have moved into the Cagayan area, Artillery will bombard Japanese positions starting tomorrow along with air attacks while the assault troops will get a bit of rest before attempting an attack. MSWs have been dispatched to check the area for mines and pending the result Ed's Old Gals will get some more work to do.

“Now I want you to dig really deep as we'll be in this place for a while unless we can push the Japanese back. For now we'll get a bit of a rest before the first attack is made so our artillery, Navy and fly boys will try and soften things up a bit.” Slim flops into his hole and decides that it could be deeper.

Sam is told that with the defenses are completed and the airfield is almost as big as they plan on making it. The Sea Bee takes a pull on the beer and says that there's no rest for the weary because the port is slated for expansion. Sam finishes his beer and thanks the Sea Bee for the booze and news as he hands over a Japanese bayonet and a small flag.

FDR is concerned that Stalin is going behind his back and is looking to make a deal with the Japanese. The future of the war in the north hinges on Stalin's keeping his word.

Yesterday 188 out of 800 Luftwaffe planes were shot down during their last major attack of the war.

Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsey died in a plane crash. This was the fourth prominent Allied leader to die like this.

Danish saboteurs wrecked a V2 factory in Copenhagen.

Victoria Point was bombed by 131 X B-29 and the AA fire damaged 4 of them. The airfield took very heavy damage, there were a few secondary explosions, a Myrt was trashed and casualties were moderate.

Tavoy was attacked by 135 X Liberator VI (4 damaged) and 17 X Thunderbolt II. The airfield sustained extremely heavy damage, there was a huge number of secondary explosions seen and personnel losses were moderate.

Cagayan was under a LRCAP of 9 X P-38J when 29 X B-24J (6 damaged) and 71 X P-38J struck. The airstrip was moderately hit and casualties were moderately heavy. Then 48 X PB4Y (3damaged), 46 X B-24D, 96 X B-24J (3 damaged), 24 X P-51D and 11 X F4U-1D hit for moderately heavy damage to the airfield, very heavy damage to the port, a very large number of secondary explosions were seen and casualties were heavy. The IJA 18th Division was hit by 10 X SB2C (5 damaged), 15 X TBM-3d (1 downed, 7 damaged) and 20 X F6F who inflicted moderate troop losses. Then the 18th was pounced on by 29 X B-25J (7 damaged), 15 X P-47D (1 downed, 1 damaged), 10 X P-38J and 13 X F4U-1 for moderate casualties. Next up was the IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade being jumped by 9 X B-25J (5 damaged), 6 X P-47D (2 damaged), 3 X P-38J and 17 X F4U-1. The unit took light losses. Allied artillery inflicted very heavy casualties on the Japanese.

Gili Gili was targeted by 68 X B-24D and 3 X Spitfire VIII resulting in moderate port damage, some secondary explosions and very light troop losses. The South Seas Det. was jumped by 9 X A-20G and 6 X Spitfire VIII for very light casualties.

The 1st BAF AA Regiment witnessed a Dinah being chased away by 7 X Thunderbolt II and then the same thing happened to a Peggy.

Topsys were intercepted by Allied Lightnings in the Cagayan area.

The Missouri took on fuel and then moved to her assigned place at the anchorage. Ulithi is packed to the gills with ships of all types and sizes. Bill takes a lighter ashore and watches as sacks of mail are dumped into the small craft. Then suddenly it dawns on him that he forgot the the stack of letters for Sandy. He tells the lighter's crew to wait one and he boards the Mo to get the letters.

The SS Trout continues to limp towards Darwin with very heavy flooding and balky pumps. Her crew is confident that they can make it though.

Sam can't stand it anymore on Tori Shima. He speaks with the company's CO and asks if the Army is ever going to rotate them off of this rock before the division goes to hell. The Captain sadly says that there's no word about that and that Sam isn't the only one to voice his concern.

Slim has the feeling that Cagayan is a lot like it was at Cotabato. There are plenty of Japanese, the USN, the planes and the artillery will be busy, but the poor slobs on the ground will pay the steep price in blood.

The US 1st Army attacked the north side of the Ardennes salient.

An Ann attacked the SS KXVI about 17 miles NW of Johore Bahru. The sub reported being hit and will continue towards home with moderate systems damage

An ASW attack 23 miles N of the Amami Group was made by a DD and 4 PCs on the SS Burgara. The sub was rattled, but unharmed.

Tavoy was targeted by 129 X Liberator VI (3 damaged) and 21 X Thunderbolt II resulting in extremely heavy damage done to the airfield, some secondary explosions and light casualties.

Cagayan was under a LRCAP of P-38Js who intercepted Japanese transport planes. The IJA 18th Division was attacked by 3 X B-25J (3 damaged), 13 X P-47D (3 damaged), 13 X P-38J and 13 X F4U-1. The Allied artillery hammered away at the Japanese positions resulting in very heavy troop losses.

Kwajalein was raided by 22 X SB2C and 21 X P-47D. Damage to the airstrip was very light, a secondary explosion was seen, a Judy was destroyed and personnel losses were negligible.

The 118th IJNAF Base Force, on Andaman Island, had heavy casualties from 22 X Mosquito FB.VI and 42 X B-25J (7 damaged).

Elaine was disappointed once again today as the mailman passed the house by. She's worried about Gil and not getting any letters from him is only making matters worse. Her sister tried, in vain, to comfort her and then her mother took a shot. That didn't work out to well as Elaine and her mother only ended up in an argument, for a change.

Gene reads the note passed to him as he enters the yard for his shift. It names his new immediate boss. He figured that it would be this guy as he's level headed, even handed and has seniority. Maybe now instead of friction the wheels will be greased, he thinks.

Milt is released into Pete's custody and they depart quietly before anybody can change their minds. “The next time you need to relieve yourself try the toilet,” says Pete. Milt insists that he had been waiting for one to become available, but his bladder couldn't wait any longer. Pete then said, “Then at least be smart enough not to anoint the Magistrate's vehicle with him sitting in it.” Milt smiles sheepishly and admits to being pretty drunk and the two of them share a laugh.

The US casualty list to December 21 was 135,323 KIA, 362,824 WIA, 75,844 MIA and 64,148 POW.

Ichang underwent a fighter sweep made by 64 X P-38J. The Japanese offered battle with 15 X George, 12 X Jack, 4 X Oscar, 18 X Tojo, 9 X Tony and 34 X Frank. 6 Lightnings were lost and 3 damaged as they accounted for 4 Georges, 4 Jacks, 4 Oscars, 18 Tojos, 8 Tonys and 19 Franks being shot down.

Bangkok was swept by 126 X P-38J who dove out of the morning sun into the gaggle of 25 X Zeke, 6 X George, 9 X Jack, 12 X Oscar, 10 X Frank, 3 X Tony and 9 X Randy. A Jack and 8 Oscars survived the fight while the Allies lost 3 Lightnings and 3 others were damaged.

Cagayan was intruded upon by 13 roaming Hellcats who intercepted some Topsys. A raid of 28 X B-24J (4 damaged) and 120 X P-38J caused moderate port damage, some secondary explosions and moderate casualties. A more deadly strike of 45 X B-24D (1 damaged), 87 X B-24J (2 damaged) and 24 X P-51D did moderate damage to the airfield, heavy damage to the port, there were a large number of secondary explosions and personnel losses were very heavy. The IJA 56th Division was hit by 36 X B-25J (1 destroyed, 8 damaged) 10 X P-47D and 12 X P-38J and took heavy losses. The IJA 102nd Division was jumped by 12 X TBM-3d (2 downed, 4 damaged) and 12 X F4U-1D. The unit escaped harm. An Allied attack on the Japanese positions resulted in extremely heavy casualties on both sides, though it was suspected that the Japanese losses were twice those of the Allied forces. Little territorial change occurred.

Kwajalein was struck by 26 X SB2C and 23 X P-47D. The airfield was lightly damaged, a secondary explosion was seen, a Thora was burning and casualties were light.

“Look, the squadron has 38 kills to it's credit and I've flown 72 missions without scratching a single Jap plane. What I want to know is if I'm going to set the record for futility?” Stick stares at the floor of the tent and his CO tries to build up Stick's spirits.

Ed's Old Gals are on the move as he's been given the go to bombard Cagayan. Phil informed him of the orders and that the all clear was given by the MSWs there.

Slim wearily drops into his hole and almost immediately falls asleep. One of the lads stops by and wakes him to tell him that the company CO has called for officers and NCOs, now. Slim crawls out of the hole and tells the lad to pass the word to keep their eyes to the front or sleep depending on whose watch it is. At the meeting a bleak picture is painted as they are told that the 2nd Marine Division is down to about 70% strength and that replacements will be slow in coming. “We've got to make do with what we've got and if push comes to shove the cooks will pick up their rifles too. We're Marines and we always get the job done.” Slim heads back to his platoon's position wondering why he lost sleep for a rah rah session.

At Cagayan Topsys were intercepted by Allied fighters and the Allied artillery accounted for heavy Japanese troop losses.

Slim sits in his hole eating a K ration while listening to the rumble of the Allied artillery pounding the Japanese. The weather was lousy today and he tired himself out using his helmet in a vain effort to bail out his hole as the rain fell. What's worse is that he wasn't aware of Allied planes attacking the Japanese. “More for us to kill, I suppose,” he mutters to himself wearily.

Gil and some of the other guys have combined with their sister crew to form a baseball team and no sooner than they started to play the rain came. The game stopped and guys raced for bars of soap. Gil just stood there face up letting the rain soak him as it felt so good.

The SS Lamprey underwent an ASW attack made by 6 X PG and a PC about 63 miles NW of the Amami Group.

The SS Sunfish tried and failed to attack a TK being escorted by 6 PCs and a PG 19 miles SE of Belitung.

Kwajalein was raided by 32 X PB4Y who managed to do light damage to the airstrip, cause a few secondary explosions, destroy 4 X Thora and inflict extremely light casualties. Another attack by 17 X PB4Y caused a secondary explosion and there were extremely light troop losses.

Gili Gili was visited by 87 X B-24D and 12 X Spitfire VIII. The Japanese base had moderate damage to the airfield, some secondary explosions were observed and there were light casualties.

The IJA 16th Mixed Brigade, at Kai Island, escaped harm despite the efforts of 94 X B-25J and 11 X Kittyhawk III.

Ichang was swept by 67 X P-40N who were opposed by 9 X George, 10 X Jack, 1 X Oscar, 6 X Tojo, 3 X Tony and 17 X Frank. The Chinese lost 41 Warhawks and the Japanese had 2 Georges, 4 Jacks, 4 Tojos, 2 Tonys and 2 Franks get shot down.

Cagayan was bombarded by some of the Old Gals who caused light damage to the port, extremely light damage to the airfield and there were heavy personnel losses. Allied artillery contributed heavy Japanese casualties during the course of the day. Topsys were intercepted by Allied fighters in the area.

The SS Trout arrived at Darwin with such severe flooding that her sail was barely above the water. The crew were seen kissing the ground as they got off of her to get some food and dry clothing while workers rigged external pumps in an effort to save the sub from sinking.

Red and Cookie watched as the loading of the Palawan with supplies began. Their voyage will be a short one from Morotai to Menado, but they are aware of the risks in a forward area exposed to the IJN and Japanese planes. The 2 of them decide to take the opportunity and they take Lucky ashore for some exercise. Red can never get over how fast the dog can run no matter how many times he sees it. Today is no exception, but Lucky disappears into the jungle and doesn't return when called. Red is worried and Cookie is too, but he keeps it to himself while trying to reassure Red. Finally when they were about to give up on finding the dog Lucky reappears with a large snake in his mouth. He proudly trots over to Red and drops the snake at his feet. “I don't know what kind of snake this is, whether or not it's poisonous , I'm just happy it's dead. Let's get out of here and get back to the ship,” Red says.

The BB Missouri rides at anchor at Ulithi awaiting orders. As the lighter approaches the Mo Bill still can't get over the size of it and the power it projects. He knows that the real strength of the USN lies with the carriers, but there's something about a battle wagon that says power. He sure wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of a 16” shell and there's no carrier plane that can deliver a wallop like that.

Slim stares out of his hole at the Japanese positions on the next ridge and wonders what lies in between that he can't see. The USN plastered the Japanese today and the artillery pounds them too, but he knows that another assault will be in the offing as the only way to displace their unwilling enemy. He sighs and wonders why with all the modern weapons deployed it's still the same old story from the beginning of time, the infantry takes and holds territory.

In the Pescadores area an IJN DD discovered a minefield.

The SS Bugara, 23 miles W of Osumi, tried to attack a DD and 4 PCs, but they discovered her and gave her the beating of her life. The sub succumbed to her damage with no survivors.

Ichang underwent a fighter sweep by 27 X P-40N and the Japanese greeted them with 15 X George, 17 X Jack, 1 X Oscar, 11 X Tojo, 3 X Tony and 39 X Frank. All of the Warhawks were shot down and in return they accounted for 2 Tojos, a Tony and 2 Franks destroyed.

Brunei's port was raided by 27 X B-24J who did light damage to the target, ignited a few fuel explosions, caused another secondary explosion and there were extremely light casualties.

Lautem was hit by 33 X B-24D who did no harm.

Cagayan was bombed by 93 X B-24J (1 damaged), 48 X B-24D (1 damaged) and 24 X P-51D. The airfield took moderate damage, the port was lightly hit, there were many secondary explosions and personnel losses were heavy. The IJA 56th Division was pounced on by 56 X B-25J (2 downed, 7 damaged), 17 X P-47D and 17 X P-38J. The unit sustained heavy casualties. Allied artillery dished out very heavy losses on the Japanese troops today. Topsys were once again intercepted by Allied fighters.

The 149th IJN Base Force at Buna was raided by 36 X B-25J for moderate losses.

Tokyo was under a protective umbrella of 33 X Zeke, 1 X Jack, 36 X Frank and 29 X Tony when 59 X P-51D swept in on them. 13 Zekes (2 damaged), the Jack, 25 Franks and 10 Tonys were shot down. 11 Mustangs were lost and 3 took some damage.

The SS Trout sank today despite efforts to save her at the wharf.

As the Palawan continues to load Red decides to teach Lucky something new so that they can both kill the boredom. As soon as the training session starts a shower hits them and instantly they're soaked. “OK, session over,” says Red to the dog who is already under shelter.

The amount of paperwork that Bill faces is a constant avalanche. The bigger the ship the more work there is to do, he thinks to himself. The burden of command is also heavier with a larger ship as more people rely on him. He sighs, but he revels in it as this will be just another step up the ladder of command for him. He dreads the day that his command will become a shore bound desk.

Stick is silently suffering as he's sick with envy of the guys who bagged the Topsys. They were on a LRCAP over Cagayan and the lumbering transports once again tried to slip through the net. He even saw one of them, but somebody else shot it down before he even had a chance to nose over.

Combat

The SS Peto was found by 6 DDs about 147 miles E of Batavia and she underwent a rough time.

The mine field at Pescadores was swept by 6 IJN MSWs.

Ichang was prepared for another fighter sweep with 12 X George, 14 X Jack, 1 X Oscar, 9 X Tojo, 2 X Tony and 38 X Frank aloft. The Allies surprised them with 61 X P-38J and the fight was on. 6 Lightnings were lost and 4 others were damaged while the Japanese suffered 6 Georges, 10 Jacks, the Oscar, 7 Tojos, both Tonys and 29 Franks lost. This was a far cry from the Chinese efforts with their Warhawks.

Bangkok was swept by 63 X P-38J who found 12 X Zeke, 4 X George, 24 X Jack, 19 X Oscar, 10 X Frank and 14 X Tony up. In a fast and furious battle 10 Zekes, all of the Georges,, 20 Jacks, 7 Oscars, all of the Franks and 12 Tonys were downed at the cost of 5 Lightnings lost and 7 damaged. In the afternoon 2 Zekes and 4 Jacks were jumped by 66 X P-47D. All of the Japanese planes were shot down and 2 Jugs were destroyed and another was damaged.

Krung Thep was under a CAP of 44 X Frank who dealt with a raid made up of 31 X B-25J (6 damaged), 38 X P-38J, 39 X Thunderbolt II (2 lost) and and 19 X Spitfire VIII (1 damaged). The airstrip was very lightly damaged, there was a single secondary explosion and 42 Franks were destroyed. Another strike came on and this one was comprised of 45 X B-29 (1 damaged), 132 X Liberator VI (3 damaged), 48 X B-24J (1 damaged), 64 X B-25J (2 damaged), 45 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged), 37 X Thunderbolt II and 19 X P-51D. The only opposition was AA fire as the airfield was extremely heavily damaged, a huge number of secondary explosions were reported, 3 Franks were charred wrecks and casualties were heavy.

Lautem was bombed by 42 X B-24D for moderate port damage and a few secondary explosions.

Cagayan was swept by 10 Hellcats who met with no opposition. The IJA 18th Division was attacked by 10 X SB2C (1 downed, 2 damaged), 12 X TBM-3d (6 damaged) and 12 X F4U-1D resulting in light casualties for the Japanese. Then the IJA 100th Division was targeted by 28 X B-25J (2 downed, 6 damaged), 17 X P-47D, 17 X P-38J and 15 X F4U-1. The Japanese sustained negligible losses. Allied artillery contributed heavy Japanese casualties today. More Topsys were intercepted by Allied fighters today.

Truk was bombed by 316 X B-29 who dished out very heavy damage to the airfield, extremely heavy port damage, a large number of secondary explosions were seen and personnel losses were heavy.

The 145th IJN Base Force, at Buin, was hit by 36 X B-25J for light casualties.

An ASW attack was conducted 29 miles S of Tori Shima, but no hits were claimed though the Japanese sub was prevented from making an attack.

Gil couldn't believe his eyes as he sat in Ham's seat after the bomb run for a few minutes. The view was unbelievable as the explosions seemed to blanket the entire island. He wonders if the joke about sinking an island might not be such a joke after what he just saw. The island of Truk has been reduced to a shattered wreck that probably is of no use at all anymore to the Japanese.

Bill attended a meeting of ship captains as they were told about the next operation that is scheduled to commence once the island of Mindanao is declared secured. He's sitting next to a Commander who mutters something about hitting China. This thought throws Bill as he figured that Manila would be the next goal. The more he thinks of China, the more it would make sense. If planes could fly out of the PIs and China Japan would be cut off from her raw materials. The meeting ends and now Bill has plenty of questions rolling around in his head. Maybe the brass should look at China instead of Concentrating on the Philippines. He mention this to the skippers that he's grouped with and one of them says, “You would deny Doug his self serving plans?” That drew a laugh.

Sam watched the departing Mustangs and later in the day heard them returning. Once he was told that sometimes they go hunting over Japan and he wonders if today was one of those times.

Palawan continues loading as supplies come to the ship by lighter so the process is very slow. Cookie busily keeps the guys fed and Red stops by the galley for some coffee. He sees Cookie napping while his helper is sweating bullets cooking the next meal. Red smiles and nods to the man as he gets his mug of coffee and then departs.

Slim can feel it in his bones that the next assault will be very soon. He figures in the next 2 to 3 days they'll hit the Japanese with everything they have, including the kitchen sink. He hopes that the Japanese get boxed in so that chasing them in the jungles won't be needed. That would be a dirty business, at best.

The US 3rd Army attacked the south side of the Ardennes salient towards Houffalize.

Hitler ordered all divisional sized attacks or retreats must have his approval.

The British entered Thebes.

The SS Peto was 28 miles N of Belitung when she was spotted and attacked by a PG and 6 MSWs, but she escaped without ever really being at risk.

Some of the Old Gals delivered a naval bombardment of Cagayan, causing moderate damage to the airfield, moderate damage to the port and extremely heavy casualties. The IJA 18th Division was attacked by 13 X SB2C (1 downed, 4 damaged), 12 X TBM-3d (4 damaged) and 25 X F6F resulting in moderate casualties for the Japanese. Allied artillery bombardments took a heavy toll on the Japanese. Once again Topsys were intercepted by Allied fighters.

Allied troops unloading over beach at Butuan suffered extremely heavy losses.

Andaman Island was raided by 49 X B-25J (3 damaged), 45 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 2 damaged) and 17 X Thunderbolt II. The port had light damage, there were a few secondary explosions and casualties were extremely light. Another attack was made a few hours later by 86 X B-29 (1 damaged) who did moderate damage to the airstrip, triggered many secondary explosions and there were very light personnel losses.

Krung Thep was hit by 36 X B-25J (2 damaged) and 10 X Spitfire VIII. The airfield had moderate damage, a secondary explosion was reported and casualties were placed at very light. A second attack consisting of 125 X Liberator VI (4 damaged), 40 X B-24J, 43 X B-29 and 11 X Thunderbolt II appeared in the late afternoon and added very heavy airstrip damage, a large number of secondary explosions and moderately heavy troop losses.

At Buin the 140th IJN Base Force was jumped by 46 X B-25J. The Japanese unit took moderately heavy casualties.

75 combat missions to his credit and poor Stick still can't get a kill. One of his fellow pilots says to him that he's viewing things all wrong. “I'd take you as my wing man any old day. Is there another guy in the squadron that stays as glued as you do to your lead? Hell Stick, you're just doing your job and doing it damned well.” Stick nods and wonders if that's really true.

“The 2 Army Regiments will attack and take Butuan and then act as a blocking force so the Japanese will have nowhere to run as the attack on Cagayan resumes, we'll have them boxed in.” The Major asks for questions and nobody has any so he melts away to the back of the room. FDR then asks if there is any hope of the Japanese surrendering and the answer is a no. Franklin sighs and thanks everyone for their time. He turns to Admiral King and General Marshall and asks if these 2 regiments are being used as sacrificial lambs to suit Mac's needs. They assure him that the Japanese should be pinned at Cagayan and that they will be held there by the assault force. “Somehow that doesn't give me comfort gentlemen,” Franklin says as he bids them a good night.

Ed stares as the map of Mindanao and says, “Gentleman as much as I enjoy having Dadjangas for a forward base Cagayan would serve our needs much better. Once Mindanao is in our hands, the damage is cleared, further building of facilities is accomplished and supplies and fuel are stocked we'll really be in business for the next phase of the offensive.” He staff murmur their agreement and with the end of the meeting they melt away to their jobs. Phil asks Ed if there's any word from the ground commanders about when they expect to take control of Cagayan's port and Ed shrugs his shoulders and says, “Your guess is as good as mine so for now let's act on assuming the optimistic and be prepared to move as soon as possible.”

Congrats on breaking the 50K mark -- but I notice that the Japanese gained on you this turn. Is this from the casualties at Butuan?

Sura'iro is occupied by the Allies

Cagayan's defenders day began with a naval bombardment from the Old Gals that inflicted moderate casualties. A LRCAP was provided by 11 X F4U-1 and they intercepted some Topsys. 30 X PB4Y (8 damaged) and 6 X P-38J hit the port for light damage and a couple of secondary explosions. The IJA 18th Division was jumped by 37 X B-25J (5 damaged), 19 X P-47D, 19 X P-38J and 17 X F4U-1 resulting in moderate troop losses. Another strike of 23 X B-24J and 125 X P-38J added moderate casualties to the 18th a little later in the day. The IJA 56th Division had heavy personnel losses at the hands of 27 X B-24D (1 damaged), 56 X B-24J (4 damaged) and 21 X P-51D. Allied air struck the IJA 100th Division with 8 X SB2C (5 damaged), 6 X TBM-3d (2 damaged) and 14 X F4U-1D for light casualties. The 100th was then hit again by 8 X B-24D, 21 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 3 X P-51D for heavy losses. In the late afternoon an attack on the port was made by 55 X PB4Y, 23 X P-51D, 17 X P-47D, 43 X P-38J and 17 X F4U-1. The damage was light, there were some secondary explosions observed and casualties were placed at moderate. All day long Allied artillery pounded the Japanese positions and added heavy casualties to the day's tally.

Lautem was raided by 40 X B-24D and there was a secondary explosion seen.

Kwajalein had it's port lightly damaged by 37 X PB4Y. There were also some fuel tank explosions reported.

At Buin the 149th IJN Base Force escaped scott free despite an attack by 34 X B-25J.

Bangkok was swept by 95 X P-38J who feasted on the gaggle of 29 X Zeke, 8 X George, 3 X Jack, 13 X Oscar, 13 X Frank and 6 X Tony. The Japanese losses were appalling as all but a Zeke, 9 Oscars, a Frank and 5 Tonys were shot down at the cost of 7 Lightnings lost and 5 more damaged.

At Butuan the Allied attack took the base, effectively surrounding the Japanese forces at Cagayan.

The word is passed down the line that a general assault on the Japanese positions will be made at 0800 tomorrow. Slim knew it was going to happen soon and though his lads are ready he has misgivings. The platoon, like all of the others, is depleted and even when they get replacements they don't seem to last long once the fighting starts. The lads look to their weapons and try to get some sleep. It's not an easy thing to do with the constant explosions from the artillery and bombs, but at least it's being delivered to the Japanese and not them.

The President, General Marshall and Admiral King are huddled in a meeting and they inform him that all operations are poised and ready to go. FDR asks about Mindanao and they tell him that results will come in tomorrow as the attack will happen then.

Sandy is happy to get some letters, but she'd rather have Bill around. As usual there's nothing about where he is, what he's doing, just that he's OK and misses her.

British troops took Laroche, 20 miles north of Bastogne.

A PBM attacked an IJN sub about 179 miles SW of Tori Shima, reporting a hit.

Tavoy was raided by 19 X B-25J, 5 damaged by flak and 12 X Spitfire VIII. The airstrip was lightly damaged, there were some secondary explosions and casualties were negligible.

Cagayan was under a LRCAP of 9 X F4U-1 and they intercepted some Topsys.. An attack was made by 36 X PB4Y (7 damaged) and 5 X P-38J who did light damage to the port, triggered a few secondary explosions and there were light personnel losses. The IJA 18th Division had moderate casualties from 10 X B-24J and 62 X P-38J. The IJA 56th Division was jumped by 19 X B-25J (4 damaged), 3 X P-47D, 2 X P-38J and 14 X F4U-1 resulting in moderate troop losses. The IJA 100th Division was visited by 9 X B-24J (2 damaged) and 51 X P-38J who caused light casualties. Next up was the IJA 102nd Division as an attack was made on it by 28 X B-25J (10 damaged), 18 X P-47D and 15 X P-38. They accounted for the unit having heavy losses. Another attack was made in the afternoon by 53 X PB4Y (3 damaged), 24 X P-51D, 16 X P-47D, 37 X P-38J and 14 X F4U-1 did light damage to the port, caused some secondary explosions and inflicted moderate personnel losses on the Japanese. An Allied assault gained a little ground, both sides had extremely heavy casualties. It was thought that the Japanese got the short end of the stick in the attack though.

Kwajalein had it's port lightly damaged, a couple of fuel explosions were seen, another type of secondary explosion was also reported and casualties were moderately light.

On Kai Island the Kure 1st SNLF was hit by 68 X B-25J, 64 X P-38J and 11 X Kittyhawk III for heavy losses. The 16th Mixed Brigade was struck by 44 X B-25J, 7 X P-38J and 2 X Kittyhawk III for very light casualties.

Hansa fell to the Japanese today. It is suspected that this Japanese force is what remains from the troops chased into the jungles. Allied paratroopers will retake the base shortly.

Slim has the lads digging once again and of course they are muttering their displeasure for a change. Today’s attack got off to a good start, but quickly bogged down as they faced many bunkers spraying death. The platoon lost 6 KIA and had 14 WIA, of whom 3 came back from the aid station already. Slim figures that this war is nothing more than a meat grinder and the odds of surviving are getting worse all of the time.

Milt quietly agrees to pay a fine and is happy to avoid time in the local jail. “It's a bit hard to get a pint in that place,” he jokes with Pete. Pete paid the fine for Milt and told him to behave and in the future to please use the proper facilities to relieve himself.

Red shows the message to Cookie who whistles in amazement. Their lawyer has informed them that their land holdings have increased once again. “He's really looking to make a buck, isn't he?” Red says. Cookie smiles and says that that's OK with him as it's beginning to look like they'll be well to do if they survive the war.

Elaine's friend who was working in a factory now has only 9 fingers as she got careless and lost the tenth to a machine. Elaine and a couple of the girls went to visit her this afternoon and it left Elaine depressed. She hates this war for what it's doing to people and there's just no end in sight.

Konev launched the winter offensive at Baranov.

A PBM Mariner attacked a sub about 17 miles E of Pagan and reported a hit.

The SS Grayback, 24 miles NW of San Marcelino, attacked a lone AK in the predawn hours hitting it twice with the deck gun and 4 fish, sinking the vessel.

The SS Tautog, 77 miles SE of Hong Kong, attacked a single AK, Her deck gun connected 5 times and 2 torpedoes slammed into the target also. Tautog's skipper didn't want to risk lingering to admire their work as the sun was already up so they slipped away.

Koepang was raided by 41 X B-24D (6 damaged). The port was lightly damaged and there was a secondary explosion.

Kwajalein was attacked by 28 X PB4Y who caused a fuel tank to explode.

The SS Dolphin, near Pescadores , was finished dropping her mines when 6 X MSW appeared so she hit one of them with a torpedo. The MSW sank beneath the waves rapidly.

At Cagayan an Allied attack on the Japanese positions gained a little ground and both sides had extremely heavy losses. Topsys were once again intercepted by Allied fighters.

Slim wearily digs a new fighting hole to spend the night in. He's exhausted after two days of almost constant fighting. When the word is passed that tomorrow they'll be holding the line he feels relieved. He silently prays that the Japanese are as battered as his unit is and that they too take a day off from the insane carnage that has reigned. He figures that he's got a day, maybe two before the next big push. He wonders if anybody will be left alive as the platoon is down to about 26 Marines that are considered combat effective.

The Palawan is busily unloading, but it's taking forever at lighters are being used. Cookie's helper dumped the garbage overboard today and then spent a while watching the sharks. The thought of sharks sends chills through Red as he remembers being in the water during the opening days of the war and they're getting steadily closer to where it happened.

Stick entered the number 70, the number of combat missions he has flown, and 0 for his kill total in a record of his wartime experiences. Then he sighs, closes the book and wonders if he's cursed. His squadron has been given credit for 38 kills and he's longing to add to the total. Today his flight was over Cagayan and the skies were empty. Within an hour of their returning to base some Topsys were splashed.

The Jorstad Bridge was blown up by the Norwegian resistance, killing 70 Germans.

The Germans completed their withdrawal from Greece and Albania.

Zhukov launches his winter offensive today.

Rokossovsky Launched a winter offensive today.

A Jake attacked the SS Gudgeon near Pescadores and the sub reported being hit. Then the Gudgeon was attacked by 2 PGs and a PC, but she escaped harm. A little later after having given her attackers the slip 5 MSWs found her and tried to attack the sub, but once more she evaded and escaped. Now the sub has moderate systems damage and flooding so she'll make for a port.

Bangkok had a CAP of 20 X Zeke, 7 X George, 6 X Jack, 8 X Oscar, 16 X Frank and 13 X Tony aloft when 41 X B-25J being escorted by 52 X Thunderbolt II arrived just as a fighter sweep of 128 X P-38J was attacking the CAP. A Mitchell was shot down by the AA fire and 16 were damaged while 3 P-38J were destroyed and 3 others were damaged. Between the bullets and bombs the Japanese sustained moderate damage to the airfield, a couple of secondary explosions were observed and personnel losses were heavy. 21 Zekes, 8 Georges, 6 Jacks, 10 Oscars, 16 Franks, 3 Tonys (2 damaged), a Randy and 2 Dinahs were lost in the air and on the ground.

Cagayan was under a LRCAP of 8 X F6F who intercepted some Topsys. The IJA 18th Division was hit by 9 X SB2C (1 damaged),13 X TBM-3d (2 damaged) and 12 X F4U-1D for negligible losses. Another strike of 15 X B-25J (3 damaged), 21 X P-47D (1 downed, 2 damaged), 18 X P-38J and 35 X F4U-1 hit the 18th for moderate casualties. Then the 18th Division was pelted once again by 54 X B-24J and 15 X B-24D resulting in moderate losses. In the afternoon the IJA 56th Division was attacked by 26 X B-24J and 24 X B-24D for heavy casualties. Allied artillery barrages inflicted moderately heavy losses on the Japanese.

Kwajalein was raided by 31 X PB4Y who caused moderate damage to the airfield, triggered a few secondary explosions, destroyed 2 Thoras and there were very light casualties.

The 140th IJN Base Force at Buin was struck by 15 X B-25J, but the Japanese escaped harm. A short time later the 145th IJN Base Force was jumped by 26 X B-25J, but they too escaped being hurt.

At Hansa the Sasebo 7th SNLF was attacked by 12 X A-20G and 3 X B-25J who caused moderately heavy casualties. Another strike was made by 63 X B-24J, 46 X B-24D, 7 X A-26B and 62 X P-38J and this time the Japanese had moderate losses. A para drop and assault by elements of the 503 Paras retook the base pushed out the Japanese there.

Tokyo was swept by 57 X P-51D who ran into 31 X Zeke, 1 X Jack, 31 X Frank and 26 X Tony. In a bloody dance of death 10 Zekes, 19 Franks and 20 Tonys were shot down while the Jack was damaged at the cost of 13 Mustangs destroyed and 5 more damaged.

Bill attended another meeting today and wonders when all of the staff stuff will end and the action will begin. He knows that ships are repairing things that need tending to before the next offensive begins and he figures that once Cagayan falls and the Sea Bees do their thing there that he will be swinging into action. The scuttlebutt abounds with destinations from Manila, Formosa, China and even Japan. The only ones he discounts are the soon to be cut off Japanese holdings in the CBI and DEI areas.

After a night of little sleep Slim feels like a pretzel and he longs to just get out of the hole and stretch. Doing so would probably end in his drawing the unwanted attention of almost every Jap left on Mindanao and he knows that unfortunately there are plenty of them left.

Sandy and Dave look out of the window at a freshly fallen snow. She says, “It looks so beautiful.” Dave responds by saying that it'll be a struggle just to get to the garage and that if it keeps snowing he'll have to shovel off the roof of the house. Sandy agrees and says, “So how about a nice, hot mug of coffee and some eggs to start your day? Would you rather have some oatmeal cereal instead? That'll stick to you ribs while you fight the snow later>” Dave pours a mug of coffee and opts for the oatmeal.

The SS Tautog, 81 miles E of Hong Kong, tracked and attacked an AK being escorted by 4 PCs. She hit her target with 2 torpedoes and then the escorts made her pay. Tautog will now make for port with light systems damage and light flooding.

Bangkok was attacked by 48 X B-29, 137 X Liberator VI, 48 X B-24J, 64 X B-25J, 38 X Mosquito FB.VI, 24 X P-51D and 63 X Thunderbolt II. The Japanese attempted to intercept the attackers with 16 X Zeke, 4 X George, 7 X Jack, 8 X Oscar, 15 X Frank and 13 X Tony. The Allied fighters did their deadly work and lost 2 Thunderbolt IIs and another was damaged in the fighting. The Japanese never penetrated the Allied fighters, but AA fire downed a B-29 (5 damaged), a Liberator VI (14 damaged), 2 B-24Js damaged, 2 Mitchells damaged and a Mosquito was damaged. Between the Allied fighters and the bombs the toll on Japanese aircraft was 20 Zekes, 7 Georges, 8 Jacks, 9 Oscars, 15 Franks, 5 Tonys (2 damaged), 4 Dinahs, 2 Irvings and a Randy destroyed. The airfield took extremely heavy damage, there were a huge number of secondary explosions and casualties were very heavy. The IJA 56th Division had moderate losses from an attack made by 36 X B-24D, 58 X B-24J and 18 X P-51D. The IJA 100th Division was hit by 42 X B-25J (4 damaged), 17 X P-47D (1 damaged) and 3 X P-38J for moderate casualties. Allied artillery contributed moderate Japanese losses. Some Topsys were intercepted by Allied fighters.

At Cagayan 35 X B-17E (1 damaged), 15 X P-38J and 32 X F4U-1 attacked the port area triggering a secondary explosion and inflicting moderate personnel losses. Another strike consisting of 27 X B-24J (1 damaged) and 119 X P-38J caused moderate damage to the airfield and moderate casualties.

Kwajalein was hit by 29 X PB4Y for moderate airfield damage, a secondary explosion and a destroyed Thora.

The 140th IJN Base Force on Buin was struck by 47 X B-25J for light losses.

The 1st BAF AA Regiment, 22 miles north of Krung Thep was being spied on by a Dinah, but they shot it down.

The Sasebo 7th SNLF, Hansa was attacked by 11 A-20G and the unit escaped damage. Then 6 X A-26B and 44 X P-38J attacked, but once more the clouds and jungle obscured the target. Allied troops attacked, but the Japanese managed to break contact, melting away into the jungles of PNG.

Dave sheepishly comes in from outside and Sandy greets him with a hot mug of coffee. “I saw you slide off the roof. Lucky for you the snow cushioned your fall,” she laughs. Dave's face is already red from the cold and he mutters his thanks for the coffee. Later he heads off to the garage to shovel off the roof there and Sandy reminds him to be careful. Later she trudges through the snow with a thermos filled with coffee and a couple of sandwiches for Dave's lunch. She finds him sitting inside playing euchre with one of his pals. They share the lunch and Sandy heads back to the house.

Stick is up to 80 combat missions flown, but still no kills. Tomorrow the Flying Deuces will be on LRCAP duty over Cagayan. Maybe he'll get a crack at the Topsys that continue to try and sneak in and out of there. The thought of people asking him what he did during the war and then them asking how many Japanese planes he shot down scares him more than the Japanese. He doesn't want people thinking that he didn't do his part.

Phil awaits word from the bombardment TF that will open tomorrow's show at Cagayan prior to the air and ground attacks. The weather forecast isn't good though. It's interesting to work for Admiral Landy, but Phil longs to be in command of a ship again. Staff work is a necessary evil, but not his cup of tea.

Slim looks at the gathering clouds and prays that the planes will be able to fly tomorrow so that when the attack is made the Japanese might have their heads down.

The Red Army took Kielce.

Combat

The mine field at Pescadores was being swept by 5 MSWs.

A naval bombardment of Cagayan announced the start of a new day as the Old Gals caused light damage to the airfield and port, triggered a couple of secondary explosions and inflicted extremely heavy casualties. Next up were 31 X B-17E, 4 X P-38J and 19 X F4U-1 who attacked the port adding light damage, a couple of secondary explosions and very light troop losses. The IJA 18th Division was jumped by 24 X B-25J (6 damaged) and 15 X F4U-1 for moderate casualties. The IJA 56th Division was targeted by 17 X B-25J (6 damaged) and 2 X F4U-1 resulting in light losses. The IJA 56th Division had the dubious honor of the attention of 69 X B-24J, 37 X B-24D, 52 X PB4Y and 22 X P-51D and the unit sustained very heavy losses. Before they knew it the 56th was hit by 128 X B-29 for additional heavy casualties. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade was then visited by 11 X B-24J and 16 X PB4Yand the bombs caused moderately heavy casualties. The 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade was struck by 64 X B-29 for heavy losses. Still not done Allied air hit the IJA 100th Division with 8 X SB2C, 16 X TBM-3d (2 damaged), 17 X P-38J, 15 X P-47D (1 downed, 4 damaged) and 21 X F6F for light losses. Another strike on the 100th Division was made by 10 X B-24J, 18 X PB4Y and 111 X P-38J (4 damaged) resulting in very heavy casualties. A LRCAP was being maintained and it intercepted some Topsys. An Allied assault on the Japanese defenses made some progress while both sides had extremely heavy losses.

Andaman Island had it's airstrip blasted by 121 X B-29 (8 damaged) for very heavy damage, a few secondary explosions were reported and personnel losses were moderate.

Bangkok was attacked by 45 X Mosquito FB.VI, 74 X Thunderbolt II and 18 X P-51D. 3 X Zeke, 1 X George, 2 X Oscar, 3 X Frank and 7 X Tony engaged the attackers. A Mosquito was destroyed by the AA and another 8 took damage as the Allied fighters downed all of the Japanese fighters except for a Frank and 4 Tonys, 1 of which was trailing smoke. The airfield had light damage, 1 Zeke, 1 George and an Irving were left burning while there were moderate casualties.

Kwajalein was raided by 30 X PB4Y for light port damage and a couple of secondary explosions.

The SS Herring, 16 miles W of Pescadores, attacked 5 MSWs and hit 1 with a fish, sinking it.

Gil heard all of the chatter about how crowded the skies over Cagayan were. According to Jake there were all kinds of aircraft pounding the Japanese positions. Now that they finally got back to base exhaustion really hits the Lucky 11 hard. The guys drift off in different directions after the debriefing, some for chow and others like Gil to their cots for some sleep. After all of these missions Gil still feels that it's strange not to hear the sound of the engines. He can't imagine how noisy other bombers must be without the insulation that the B-29 has.

Slim busily digs his new fighting hole. He's amazed that they actually gained ground today, pushing the Japanese back. Between the Navy's big guns, the planes, artillery and the assault he figures that the Japanese must be reaching the end of their endurance. Of course that means nothing except the need to slaughter them to the last man. The platoon has been pulled into company reserve, giving the lads a little rest and some hot food. Slim thinks that it's kind of funny that the Corps trains you in cleanliness and in the field you have to scrape the crud off when you finally get a chance. He longs for a hot shower and clean sheets, a dream.

Once again the Old Gals opened the day at Cagayan with a naval bombardment the resulted in moderate damage to the airstrip and port, some secondary explosions and heavy casualties. Some Topsys were intercepted by the Corsairs on LRCAP. When the shelling stopped the Allied troops surged forward and took the base, forcing the Japanese to fall back into the jungle. Both sides had extremely heavy losses.

Bangkok was swept by 124 X P-38J who pounced on 10 X Zeke, 3 X George, 3 X Jack, 2 X Oscar, 6 X Frank and 9 X Tony. The fight was over in minutes with all of the Japanese fighters having been destroyed. Only 2 Lightnings sustained some damage. Having had the way paved for them a strike arrived consisting of 38 X B-29, 46 X B-24J, 126 X Liberator VI and 35 X Thunderbolt II. The flak damaged 2 B-29s, 3 B-24Js and 8 Liberator VIs. The airfield was heavily damaged, there were reports of an extremely large number of secondary explosions, 5 Dinahs, 5 Zekes, 4 Franks, 3 Georges, 2 Oscars, a Tony, a Jack and an Irving were trashed and casualties were placed at very heavy.

Stick was shut out once more as some of his squadron shot down some Topsys. He's got 83 combat missions to his credit now, but not even a fraction of a kill.

FDR is handed the news by General Marshall along with Admiral King. The three men share a smile and discuss what's next over a drink. “There is still some hard fighting to be done in the Cagayan area as there are still substantial numbers of Japanese to be dealt with there,” says General Marshall. FDR is encouraged by the progress of the war plans, but wishes that things would move along faster. Admiral King said that he expected a problem keeping so many ships running around as the demands for fuel will be enormous.

The platoon sergeant walks with Sam and says, “Sam you're a damned fine soldier, but you've been hitting the sauce to much lately and you need to stop it.” Sam tells him that everything is under control and the drinking is only a way to try to break the boredom of sitting around waiting for something to happen. He went so far as to say that he almost wishes that the Japanese would attack so he'd have something to do and somebody to take his frustrations out on.

The Red Army forced the Germans to evacuate Warsaw.

The Germans at Budapest are now encircled.

The Russians took Czenstochova.

Combat

At Buin the 149th IJN Base Force was struck by 36 X B-25J for moderate casualties.

Balikpapan's port was attacked by 34 X PB4Y and it was lightly damaged, a fuel tank erupted and casualties were very light. 9 X Frank and 22 X Tony attacked the bombers and between them and the AA fire 1 PB4Y went down and 15 more were damaged. A Frank (3 damaged) and a Tony (7 damaged) were shot down by the bombers.

At Cagayan an Allied artillery bombardment accounted for heavy Japanese losses.

Roving P-47Ds intercepted some Japanese planes over Paramushiro Jim, thought to have been Frances

Sam leads a patrol and when it's over he spends time playing with Frankie. One of the guys offers him a beer, but Sam turns it down. Later during a card game he again turns down a drink. Frankie lies at his feet and after winning 4 consecutive hands of 5 card stud then guys start complaining so he quits the game and heads off to the hut that his squad recently moved into. It's warm inside and the dog curls up in the warmest spot while Sam lies down on his cot.

Elaine stares at the freshly fallen snow as the boy from next door busily shovels the sidewalk. She offered him 25 cents, but he demanded 50 so she relented. He wants a dollar to do the driveway as it's a long way from the street to the garage that's behind the house. Elaine agreed and there are 2 of the neighborhood boys working on it now. She feels like they shook her down, but her father will be pleased that he won't have to deal with the snow when he gets home from work later. She's upset that there's no mail delivery today because of the storm and that means no chance of a letter from Gil. Her mind drifts to the time she, her sister and brother went outside one winter when it was very cold and sprayed some water on the grass so that they had a path of ice. Then they ran and dove onto it and were able to slide. It was fun and life seemed so much better back then.

Slim laughs as he says that it's about time the Japanese had their rear ends evicted from Mindanao, but he knows that there's lots of hard fighting ahead before that'll happen. Meanwhile the 2nd Marine Division digs in for what they hope is an uneventful night. Slim reminds the lads to stay alert when it's their turn and when he returns to his hole he chambers a round in the Browning .45 automatic that he latched onto a few weeks ago. He checks and double checks that the safety is on and he tells the lad sharing the hole, “Stay alert and wake me when it's my turn to watch.”

The Army is considering where they can pull additional manpower from to keep the pressure up on the Japanese. This grand offensive is grinding down the line units and they need to be rested, but the Japanese are so numerous that it's impossible to refit them.

The Germans pulled out of Krakow.

East Prussia was entered by the Red Army.

Lodz fell to the Russians.

66,000 inmates of Auschwitz were shipped to Germany.

The SS Herring was attacked by 5 PCs 33 miles SE of Hong Kong. She was lightly damaged in the attack. Once the sub had made good it's escape they rose to periscope depth to take a peek before surfacing and they were jumped by the PCs again and this time the damage was very heavy and the flooding caused her demise.

The SS Rock, 20 miles NW of Pontianak, tried to attack 6 X DD, but they detected and attacked her first. The sub will return to a port for repairs as she now has light systems damage.

At Cagayan the Old Gals fired on Japanese positions inflicting very heavy casualties. Allied artillery chipped in dishing out heavy losses.

The SS S-27, 82 miles S of Banjarmasin, stalked and attacked a TK being escorted by a PG and 6 PCs. The target ate 2 torpedoes and was burning with heavy damage.

The SS Plunger, 79 miles N of Soerabaja, was hunted by 3 PGs and a PC who never managed to pin her location.

At Buin the 149th IJN Base Force was attacked by 48 X B-25J for heavy losses.

Japanese planes over Paramushiro Jima were intercepted by Allied fighters.

Slim got no sleep last night as there were to many incidents of nervous Marines firing blindly into the night thinking that there were Japanese closing in on them. These new lads have a lot to learn, he thinks to himself. What he can't understand is how with almost constantly having flares drifting down to their front can these guys be seeing things? He finally just writes it off to nerves and he knows that everybody has frayed nerves around here.

FDR is still concerned about the Russians upholding their end of the deal. He sighs and thinks that in about 2 months he'll know for sure. With the Germans crumbling before the Allied armies he wonders if Stalin feels like he no longer has a use for America and Britain. Of one thing he's certain is that Churchill keeps insisting that Stalin is not to be trusted.

British Empire casualties to 11/44 were 282,162 KIA, 80,580 MIA, 386,374 WIA and 294,438 POW.

Combat

At Cagayan the Old Gals pounded the Japanese for moderate casualties. The IJA 18th Division was pounced on by 15 X B-17E and 18 X B-25J for light losses. Then another strike of 18 X B-24J and 48 X P-38J hit the 18th for extremely light casualties. Meanwhile the IJA 56th Division was attacked by 77 X B-24J and 15 X B-24D for moderate losses. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade had moderate casualties due to 20 X B-17E and 26 X B-25J, 2 of which were damaged by ground fire. An Allied attack was blunted by the Japanese as both sides had extremely heavy casualties.

The SS Plunger, 93 miles N of Soerbaja, tried to attack a TK under escort by a PG and 6 PCs. They located her and drove her off after a viscous pounded with depth charges.

Tokyo was subjected to a fighter sweep made by 59 X P-51D who battled 43 X Zeke, 1 X Jack, 52 X Frank and 18 X Tony. 18 Zekes (1 damaged), the Jack, 27 Franks and 13 Tonys were shot down while 15 Mustangs were lost and 2 others were damaged.

Ichang was swept by 72 X P-38J who encountered 6 X George, 9 X Jack, 6 X Oscar, 15 X Tojo, 35 X Tony and 27 X Frank. The Lightnings lost 11 planes and had 4 damaged while the Japanese lost 6 Georges, 7 Jacks, 13 Tojos, 32 Tonys and 17 Franks.

Andaman Island was raided by 57 X B-25J (1 damaged), 42 X Mosquito FB.VI (2 damaged), 45 X P-47D and 18 X Thunderbolt II. The airstrip was lightly damaged as was the port, a secondary explosion was seen and personnel losses were light.

Bangkok was attacked by 40 X B-25J (2 downed, 20 damaged) and 14 X Spitfire VIII just as a fighter sweep of 144 X P-38J were leaving. The sweep came up empty but the Mitchells did moderate damage to the airfield, triggered many secondary explosions, trashed a Dinah and there were heavy casualties. Another strike was made by 146 X Liberator VI (1 downed, 16 damaged) and 15 X Thunderbolt II who did very heavy damage to the airfield, caused a very large number of secondary explosions, destroyed a Zeke and inflicted very heavy troop losses.

Balikpapan was swept by 71 X P-38J who fought with 18 X Frank and 30 X Tony. 10 Franks and all of the Tonys were splashed at the cost of 5 Lightnings lost and another damaged.

Kai Island was bombed by 75 X B-25J, 13 X P-40N and 21 X Kittyhawk III. The airstrip was lightly damaged and there were some secondary explosions seen.

Gili Gili was hit by 86 X B-24J and 12 X Spitfire VIII for light airfield damage, light port damage and a few secondary explosions were reported.

Rabaul was jumped by 86 X B-24D for moderate airfield damage, light port damage and moderate casualties.

At Buin the 149th IJN Base Force was pounded by 34 X B-25J for moderately heavy losses.

The SS Rock was 71 miles S of Pontianak when she attacked an AK be escorted by a PC. The target was hit by 3 fish and was ablaze with a heavy list to port and as the Rock silently slipped away the AK died.

Japanese planes were intercepted over Paramushiro Jima by Mustangs on a LRCAP.

“So what is being suggested is that we can make snatch and grabs for all of these spots? Recon flights have confirmed that they're wide open for us? Are we absolutely sure? Only sending in a Marine Bn to each spot is risky and they could get caught,” says FDR. He's told that recon has confirmed that these bases in question are indeed vacant and that a double checking will be done before the arrival of any troops and that there will be a larger reserve force on call if needed. “OK then let's go ahead with this and shut Borneo down to the Japanese,” Franklin says closing the meeting. He's told that this operation will not stop the Japanese from moving shipping in and out of Borneo from the Brunei are, but it will get dangerous for them.

The Palawan is making for Ulithi as part of a small convoy. Upon arrival she'll get new orders. Red has Tokyo Rose tuned in and he piping it through the ship. She's busy telling the Americans of their horrible losses in the battle for Mindanao and that American troops are being pushed back into the sea in their effort to retake an American colony that had been liberated by His Majesty's Imperial forces early in the war. She goes on to say that even the People in the Philippines want to be left alone by the American oppressors.

Slim doesn't even tell the lads as they've already started digging their holes for the night. The attack today went off as planned and as usual the cost in lives was very high and very little ground was gained. The platoon got some replacements today and they made good the losses from the last week. So many new faces and he's held a little meeting with them to tell them to listen to their squad leaders and the vets.

Stalin has had a cable delivered by the Tokyo Embassy putting out a feeler concerning some American ships delivering badly needed supplies to a Soviet garrison. A reply is expected and it would be a surprise if the Japanese allow this.

Combat

A Lily attacked the SS Plunger, 29 miles N of Kragan, and the sub reported that it had been hit. The sub has moderate systems damage and light flooding so she'll cut her patrol short and make for a repair facility.

The SS Golet, about 72 miles E of Singapore, played cat and mouse with 4 DDs that tried and failed to pin her location.

Bangkok's port was attacked by 45 X B-24J (5 damaged), 127 X Liberator VI (14 damaged) and 34 X Thunderbolt II who did extremely heavy damage to their target, caused a huge number of secondary explosions and inflicted very heavy casualties. The port was struck again later in the day by 64 X B-25J (1 downed, 38 damaged), 45 X Mosquito FB.VI (2 downed, 11 damaged), 64 X P-47D and 25 X Thunderbolt II for moderate damage, some secondary explosions were observed and personnel losses were placed at very heavy.

Kwajalein was raided by 22 X SB2C and 24 X P-47D who triggered a secondary explosion.

Near Cagayan the IJA 56th Division was hit by 10 X SB2C and 13 X P-38J for negligible losses. Another strike of 22 X B-17E and 33 X B-25J (1 damaged) targeted the 56th and this time around the unit sustained moderate casualties. The it was the IJA100th Division's turn when 15 X B-17E and 18 X B-25J (1 damaged) struck for heavy troop losses. A little later 18 X B-24Jand 50 X P-38J came on but the 100th was missed by the bombs. Allied artillery barrages took a heavy toll on the Japanese.

At Buin 149th IJN Base Force had no losses as clouds thwarted 36 X B-25J from finding their target.

Allied commanders wondered what the Japanese were up to now that they have obviously given up stationing aircraft at Bangkok.

Tokyo replied to Stalin's query by asking how many ships and to where. They also stated that aircraft operating close to Japan would likely attack targets of opportunity. Upon reading this Stalin grunted and said, “Let them wonder for a while and then we will tell them where and when after the ships have already sailed. The surprise will be lost around then anyway so maybe we can buy the fleet an extra day or so before the Japanese respond.”

The orders to continue the recon of Tarakan are issued as Allied commanders want to know the composition of the unit located there. Pending the outcome the orders for the TF heading that way with the 1st Marine Raider Bn might be changed. The other targets appear to be open so their orders will remain the same.

Slim can't believe that there are still so many Japanese in the area. “I feel like an exterminator,” he says, comparing the Japanese to insects.

Today the 500th BG transferred from Guam to Saipan. The Lucky 11 made the short hop on 3 engines as number 2 caught fire. Gel oversaw the extinguishing of the fire and feathering of the engine and the rest of the flight was uneventful. After getting assigned to a tent the guys walked around and decided that Guam was a better setup. “I wonder what Tinian is like?” Gil said aloud to nobody in particular.

Tannenburg fell to the Russians today.

4 IJN PCs unsuccessfully attacked the SS Raton 41 miles NW of the Amami Group.

Ichang was raided by 63 X B-25J, 67 X P-38J and 23 X P-40N. The Japanese threw 5 X George, 1 X Jack, 3 X Oscar, 10 X Tojo, 15 X Tony and 16 X Frank at the attackers, but the Allied fighters kept them away from the bombers knocking 4 Georges, 4 Oscars, 10 Tojos, 14 Tonys and 16 Franks out of the air. The cost was 4 Lightnings (1 damaged) and 14 Warhawks destroyed. The airfield was lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and a Tojo was hit.

Near Cagayan the IJA 18th Division was jumped by 6 X B-24J and 52 X P-38J for very light casualties. The IJA 56th Division was hammered by 20 X B-24D, 18 X B-17E and 31 X B-25J for moderately heavy losses and immediately following that 40 X B-24J struck the unit for similar casualties. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade was the target of 8 X B-24D, 15 X B-17E and 14 X B-25J (1 damaged) resulting in moderate troop losses. The dust had barely settled when the 24th was struck again, this time by 10 X B-24J and 36 X P-38J for very light casualties. The planes kept attacking as the IJA 100th Division was visited by 10 X SB2C, 15 X TBM-3d, 12 X P-47D and 20 X F6F who exacted a toll of light losses. In the afternoon the 100th was hit again by 42 X B-24J for moderate casualties. Allied artillery accounted for very heavy Japanese casualties.

At Buin the 145th IJN Base Force got it's daily raid made by 48 X B-25J and the unit sustained moderate losses.

Bangkok underwent a fighter sweep made by 96 P-38Js who found nothing to oppose them. Now the Allied commander feel certain that the only aircraft left at Bangkok aren't serviceable. Recon flights tomorrow will reveal more, they hope.

Slim looks and feels like hell. He's running a fever, but won't come off the line as his lads need him. To help him the company CO sends him back to try and obtain more replacements, more ammo and hot meals. “While you're at it you can also stop by the base hospital and see if they can give you anything before you return,” says the LT. The company CO is concerned because he's lost to many vets and the replacements need time to settle in and there just isn't time for them.

Sam and Frankie trudge along as the squad once again patrols the poor excuse for a beach that his battalion is responsible for defending. The guys are getting really lax and Sam reminds them that if some Japanese have slipped ashore the next sound that they hear could be their last. Sam hopes it works, but he knows that it's impossible to keep them on their toes when even he can't.

Pete and Sylvia discuss what their post war plans are for the hotel as their best customer, the USA will no longer be needing accommodations. “The one thing we can be sure of is that the pub does good enough to carry us through the tough times and we don't owe anyone any money,” says Sylvia. Pete suggests that if things get really slow maybe they should increase the size of their family. Sylvia smiles and gives him a playful punch in the ribs saying, “That's all you ever think of, you randy boy.”

The Germans lost Insterburg and Allenstein to the Russians today.

Andaman Island was bombed by 37 X B-24J (2 damaged), 37 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged), 66 X P-47D and 12 X Thunderbolt II. The airstrip took moderate damage, there was a secondary explosion and casualties were light.

Bangkok was raided by 13 X Mosquito FB.VI, 3 were shot down and 7 took damage by the heavy and accurate AA fire. The airfield was very lightly damaged. Then 102 X Liberator VI (16 damaged) and 18 X Thunderbolt II struck for extremely heavy damage to the port facilities, a large number of secondary explosions were claimed and personnel losses were thought to have been very heavy.

Balikpapan was swept by 24 X P-51D who bounced 12 X Frank and 15 X Tony. A Mustang was damaged and the Japanese lost 4 Franks and 7 Tonys in the lopsided battle.

Near Cagayan the IJA 18th Division was attacked by 9 X B-24J and 56 X P-38J resulting in light casualties for the unit. Nearby the IJA 56th Division got it's dose of bombs from 24 X B-24J and 9 X B-24D and it too had light losses. The IJA 100th Division caught it from 31 X B-17E, 22 X B-24D, 32 X B-25J and 13 X P-38J. The Japanese had moderate casualties. Then the 100th Division was jumped by 13 X B-24J and 46 X P-38J who added very light troop losses to the toll. The 100th had another attack hit them later on as 36 X B-24D and 42 X B-24J inflicted heavy casualties. The IJA 102nd Division was the target for 10 X SB2C, 15 X TBM-3d, 41 X P-38J and 20 X F6F who accounted for heavy losses. Allied artillery rained ordinance down on the Japanese throughout the day adding very heavy casualties.

One of the crew says that the dog looks so smart that sometimes he almost expects Lucky to answer Red. “Actually I've learned that the dog does communicate pretty well through facial expressions, body language and sounds,” Red tells the man.

Bill has attended another round of meetings and upon his return to the Missouri he tells his officers that there's nothing to report yet. “It's the old boredom that we hate and then miss when it all goes to hell in a basket suddenly,” he said.

Allied troops unloaded over beach at Ormoc and took heavy casualties.

Allied troops landed at Tawi Tawi and absorbed heavy losses.

Allied troops went ashore at Jolo and sustained moderate casualties.

Allied troops hit the beach at Cebu Island and had moderate troop losses.

Andaman Island was raided by 31 X B-24J and 9 X Thunderbolt II. AA fire damaged 4 of the bombers as they hit the airfield for moderate damage.

The SS Sunfish was being stalked by 5 PGs 15 miles NW of Brunei, but they couldn't nail down her exact location and the sub made them pay by hitting 1 of them with a torpedo. The target was heavily damaged and burning as the Sunfish departed while the Japanese dropped depth charges all over the area.

At Cagayan Allied artillery hammered the Japanese for heavy casualties.

Sam was bored for a change so he got a bucket of water, a bar of soap and then he proceeded to give Frankie a bath. The guys joke that they are filthy, but their dog is well groomed. “Hey, what do you mean our dog?” asks Sam. “He's mine and I let you guys play with him.” They share the laugh, but they all look at the dog as their own special alarm system as he's the best member of the squad when it comes to guard duty.

Dave tells Sandy that he's heading up to the roof to shovel the snow that fell last night and she promises to keep an eye out for him. After a while she brews some coffee and when Dave enters the house after completing his work he immediately smells it and heads into the kitchen to get a mug. It's bitterly cold outside and it's also starting to snow again so he doesn't even plan on going to the garage until after lunch and then it'll be to shovel and just hang around. Nobody would be crazy enough to try and drive on the mountain roads in this snowstorm.

Phil has put the finishing touches on the bombardment plans for Cagayan. Now he pulls out another set of charts, yawns and gets to work for Naga. Ed passes by and takes a look, nods and tells him to keep up the good work.

The Germans began the evacuation of Slovakia.

Oppeln and Gleiwitz fell to Soviet forces.

The SS Parche had a TK and it's 4 X DD escort cross her path so she put a torpedo into the tanker, setting it ablaze and causing heavy damage. The escorts tried to locate her, but failed to do so. A couple of hours later another brush with the still searching escorts came to nothing. In the late afternoon the sub was looking to surface to charge the batteries and get some fresh air, but a periscope sweep revealed the destroyers were still searching for her. That night, having made good her escape the Parche runs on the surface continuing her patrol. No location of her position was given in the report today.

At Cagayan Allied artillery accounted for heavy Japanese casualties.

Ormoc fell to the Allies.

Tawi Tawi is now an Allied base.

Jolo is in Allied hands now.

Cebu Island has been liberated by Allied forces.

Elaine hasn't gotten a letter for a few days and her parents tell her that it's probably just the Post Office and that Gil is just fine. She appreciates their attempts to allay her fears, but she's concerned. Her sister suggests that they go out and see a movie so the two girls go.

Gil wonders why there are such long gaps sometimes between missions. He's OK with just sitting on his duff, but he wonders why anyway. Life is boring on the island and though it is supposed to be secure the men aren't allowed out of a certain area, “just in case”. So far being at war is nothing like Gil thought it would be.

Chris lies in his bunk and another pilot in his squadron is busy telling him about how good they have it flying off of a carrier. “The food is pretty good, I mean we never are hungry. Hell we even have ice cream. Our bunks are clean,” the man says and Chris cuts him off with remarks about how easy it is to have the ship get sunk and then where are you?

The Red Army has now isolated Posen.

Tagbalarin was occupied by the Allies.

The SS Peto, 16 miles N or Miri, was attacked by 4 PGs, sustaining light systems damage. They gave her a rough time and when the sub managed to evade them she turned the tables a hit a PG with a torpedo, sinking it. Later 7 X PC found her and spelled her doom with a violent attack that the sub couldn't evade.

Ichang was attacked by 79 X B-25J, 52 X P-38J and 12 X P-40N. 3 X George, 1 X Jack, 3 X Oscar, 8 X Tojo, 10 X Tony and 26 X Frank tried to stop the raid. The Allied fighters did their job protecting the bombers as they shot down 2 Georges, the Jack, all of the Oscars, Tojos, Tonys and Franks while they paid with the loss of 4 Lightnings (4 damaged) and 8 Warhawks. The Mitchells did their deadly work almost at leisure as the flak was very light and inaccurate. The airfield was heavily damaged, 2 Oscars, 3 Nicks and a Dinah were destroyed at their revetments and casualties were moderately heavy.

Balikpapan was swept by 21 X P-51D who dove out of the sun and bounced 6 X Frank and 11 X Tony. The Japanese lost a Frank and 4 Tonys in the initial pass and the survivors then ran for the clouds.

Near Cagayan the IJA56th Division was struck by 14 X SB2C, 21 X TBM-3d, 64 X P-38J (1 damaged) and 26 X F6F for heavy losses. Almost immediately after they thought they were safe the Japanese of the 56th were hit again by 34 X B-17E, 20 X B-24D, 54 X B-25J and 17 X P-38J for moderate casualties. The Allies weren't done with the 56th as another strike arrived comprised of 44 X B-24J, 38 X B-24D and 52 X PB4Y who added very heavy losses to the count. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade had it's turn under the gun as 15 X PB4Y, 10 X B-24J and 54 X P-38J hit the unit for moderate casualties. The IJA 102nd Division was clobbered by 18 X B-24J, 30 X PB4Y and 48 X P-38J for heavy losses. Allied artillery barrages added heavy losses to the tally.

Slim hears the word and the word is tomorrow morning as soon as the artillery barrage lifts they will hit the Japanese positions. He returns to his hole after passing the word and falls asleep dreaming of a hamburger and a root beer float.

After reading all the reports from the various departments Bill sighs. His ship is ready for action, though there are a few minor items that are being attended to. Now if they just had some orders instead of just growing barnacles on the hull.

Chris lies in his bunk rereading a letter from Emily, trying to take his mind off of the impending action he'll soon be seeing. There has been no word passed as of yet, but with the fleet resting and the current operations in and around Mindanao closing something must be in the pipeline as he doubts the Japanese will be offering a surrender any time soon.

Ed promises the gathered generals that his Old Gals will provide as much fire support at Cagayan as humanly possible, and then some. The same is promised by the Army Air Corps and that will have to be enough as the next operation will place demands on the already stretched Allied forces.

Himmler was put in command of Army Group Vistula.

The Russians isolated 3 German Armies in East Prussia.

Kattawitz fell to the Soviets.

The Russians entered Auschwitz and found less than 3,000 survivors as the SS had moved most of the prisoners to camps in Germany.

Bacolod was occupied by the Allies

Near Cagayan the IJA 18th Division was attacked by 14 X B-17E, 6 X B-24D, 18 X B-25J (1 downed) and 4 X P-38J for moderate casualties. Another strike on the 18th Division followed a short time later made up of 14 X B-24J, 18 X PB4Y and 56 X P-38J which added addition moderate troop losses. Meanwhile the IJA 56th Division was tagged by 18 X B-17E, 15 X B-24D, 30 X B-25J and 13 X P-38J for heavy casualties. At almost the same time the IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit by 15 X B-24J, 32 X PB4Y and 50 X P-38J. The unit had heavy casualties as a result of the raid. Then 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade was bombed again by 76 X B-24J, 31 X B-24D and and 52 X PB4Y for additional heavy losses. Before the dust from the air attacks had settled the Allied ground attack surged forward, taking some ground at an extremely heavy cost to both sides.

The SS Plunger continues to battle against the sea as she makes for Darwin. Her skipper and crew are now confidant that they'll make it safely.

Slim is sitting cradling the dead body of one of the new guys and tears are rolling down his cheeks. The company CO stops and lays a hand on his shoulder and then leaves. The Captain then heads for Battalion HQs where he tells the CO that his lads are spent and that the company is no longer combat effective. “We need replacements, new everything, rest, a chance to clean ourselves up and decent food. The CO looks at him and says that they have been placed into regimental reserve for a bit and that as soon as they are relieved on the line they may head for the rear area for some R & R.

Ships continue to pour into Cagayan to unload supplies and then they anchor where they can find a place as they wait for the next stage of the Allied offensive.

Stick is so tired of flying a couple of CAP missions a day. The men and machines of the Flying Deuces are worn out and there is no end in sight.

Slim quietly sits near the chow line staring blankly at his food, playing with it. He's been uncommonly quiet since the last assault on the Japanese. The lads are giving him a wide berth and even the officers are leaving him alone, for now. Suddenly he gets up cursing a blue streak and flips they food away and stalks off to his tent. Once there he strips his tattered uniform off and heads off for a shower. Later on the company CO is shocked to see a clean shaven Marine. When he says something Slim replied, “The Corps teaches us to take care of ourselves and what kind of example would I be if I didn't do the right thing?” As to CO leaves he's smiling as it seems that the old Slim is back.

Warships have been moving from Ulithi to Dadjangas in preparation for the next big operation and Ed and his staff are working on moving the Old Gals from Dadjangas to Cotabato. Phil is very adept at planning, but he still longs for a command. Ed is aware of this and mentions to a friend of his that he has an officer on his staff that was a tin can driver who's chomping at the bits to get back to sea. The admiral tells Ed that he'll make mention of this as soon as he gets back to Pearl.

Memel fell to the Soviets.

Combat

Tacloban is occupied by the Allies.

A Helen attacked the SS S-27 about 23 miles NW of Miri and the sub reported having been hit. S-27 will now try for a friendly port with moderate systems damage and moderate flooding.

The SS Sunfish, 18 miles NW of Brunei, spotted and attacked 4 PGs. She hit one of them with a torpedo, sinking it. The PGs tried to find the sub for most of the day and in the afternoon they reaped their reward for being so persistent. The Sunfish attacked again and struck one of her would be tormentors with 2 fish. She then bugged out, not waiting around to confirm a kill.

The Old Gals swung back into action with a naval bombardment of Cagayan that inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese. The IJA 56th Division was jumped by 11 X PB4Y and 50 X P-38J for moderate losses. The IJA 24th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit by 14 X SB2C, 21 X TBM-3d, 64 X P-38J and 26 X F6F with the unit sustaining heavy losses. The IJA 102nd Division was hammered by 33 X PB4Y and 46 X P-38J for heavy casualties. Allied artillery pounded away at the Japanese positions for very heavy troop losses.

The SS Parche found a lone PG and she attacked it. A torpedo struck causing heavy damage and fires. No position report was given.

Bangkok was bombed by 154 X Liberator VI, 48 X B-24J and 35 X Thunderbolt II. AA fire was heavy and accurate as a Liberator VI was destroyed and 29 others were damaged. The target was resources and the damage done was very heavy.

Balikpapan was swept by 24 X P-51D who attacked the 9 X Frank and 15 X Tony that were up, downing 6 Franks and 7 Tonys at no cost to themselves.

Kwajalein was raided by 36 X PB4Y and 6 X SB2C. No damage was done to any facilities and personnel losses were negligible. Another attack was made by 32 X PB4Y who caused light damage to the airfield, a secondary explosion was reported, a Thora was burning and casualties were put at very light.

A huge concentration of shipping is converging on Dutch Harbor, which will be a rendezvous point before they head to the staging area.

Sam is talking a couple of the guys while tossing a ball for Frankie to retrieve. He says, “The Japs can't continue to leave us unmolested forever like this. Soon the Sea Bees will be finished here and then it's going to get tough to stay on our toes. When the Navy pulls out the booze and trinkets go too. We need to form a baseball team or something just to give us something to do.” The guys agree and Sam says that he'll speak with the company CO and see what can be done as their LT already is into this idea.

Stick is still stuck on zero kills and the guys have stopped teasing him about it. His CO doesn't even offer him encouragement any longer other than the usual that he dispenses to all of the pilots.

Still no orders to sail and Bill, like the rest of the men awaiting the word are getting antsy. The upside is that there's plenty of mail arriving for the crew each day and Bill is getting his fair share of letters from Sandy. He's busily replying to the one that arrived today when the XO knocks on his cabin door and enters when Bill responds. It seems that there is going to be a boxing tournament held and there are a few members of the crew who would like to represent their ship. One of them was a boxer from Chicago that was pretty good before he got drafted. The XO asks if Bill would like to get in on a little wagering and the reply is that not only will he back his crew monetarily, but that he wants to attend the fights and as many of the crew as possible should be able to also. The XO says that he'll get right on it by calling all department heads to the wardroom for a meeting to arrange everything.

Phil hands the reports to Ed who says that the results were OK given that spotting flights were hampered by the cloud cover and that there were only 3 BBs involved. “Soon we'll put all of the Old Gals into a chorus line of mayhem and unleash them,” says Ed.

The Ardennes Salient has been eliminated.
