Subs

Albacore annoyingly torpedoes a tanker near Sasebo despite the presence of ASW TFs and ASW aircraft. Although empty, the tanker still sinks.

5th Fleet

Not much movement by the enemy naval forces at Umnak. It appears they unloaded an LCU there from recon.

SE Fleet

Nells try a night raid on the crowded enemy 4E field at Cooktown. We hit a few bombers, but overall the attack is disappointing.

Southern Army

IJAAF raids at Derby and Broome today are not met by any flak, indicating the enemy forces are out of supply. This triggers the conditions for a ground offensive to attempt to destroy the Allied LCUs trapped here. It will take some time to march into position.

Burma

Today we set a big LRCAP trap over 17th Army 1 hex NE of Akyab and it pays off. 43 Tojos engage several lightly escorted raids by B-25s and B-24s. We don't have a lot of luck against the 4Es other than Ops losses, but we shoot down about 50% of the 2Es for a total haul of 36 kills. Very nice. We lose 19 Tojos, mostly to Ops, but only 4 pilots are KIA with 1 WIA.

The enemy also raid the closed airfield at CB.

Other

Jill advances R&D and will go into production.

We are upgrading all KB fighter units to A6M3.

Subs

Something Allied hits a mine. Probably a sub near Singers. Tracker claims O-20 is sunk, so that might be the unlucky victim.

5th Fleet

B-25s from Umnak attack Adak Island. Looks like invasion is imminent after all. IJN surface forces are creeping closer to Adak, the presumed target.

SE Fleet

Torokina hits forts 4, newly occupied Saidor goes to forts 1.

Burma

The Allied air force stays home today. This allows 17th Army to remain in move mode. We should arrive at the base on the 19th or 20th.

Subs

No contacts, but we have many subs in 5th Fleet that will be vectoring toward a large fleet spotted off Adak.

5th Fleet

The balloon is up for certain. Today several enemy task forces enter the Adak hex, but there is no bombardment or invasion. Both will surely come tomorrow. Search planes also spot what appears to be a CVE cover force a few hexes to the SE. Our small Val contingent on Amchitka doesn't fly due to weather, but our subs and surface forces will contest the landings tomorrow night. Who knows, we may even contact the CVEs and get at them Kurita-style with a little luck.

Shimushiri Jima makes airfield 3.

4th Fleet

Canton Island goes to port 5.

Southern Army

Siboeret makes airfield 3; Dobo goes to forts 3.

Perth makes port 7.

Burma

The Allies raid the CB airfield. 17th Army is closing in on Akyab - 1 day out unless we are bombed tomorrow.

Schwebo goes to airfield 3.

China

We win the race to an off-road hex near Sian, containing this small thrust.

Shaoyang makes forts 5.

Burma:

1 - The bulk of 17th Army advances directly into the Akyab hex via the road. Meanwhile, an armored regiment will seize the hex due East of the base. Because the hexside to the SE of Akyab is impassable, we believe this will force a surrender of the garrison of some 25,000 troops.

2 - Note that this Allied stack has only 1 hexside under control. We plan to rapidly close this off, isolating this force and uniting 15th and 17th Armies.

3 - The isolation of the last enemy stack in the Arakan will threaten the flank of the enemy's main effort here, which is currently stalled out at Taung Gyi and the hex to the East. Although Schwebo is building, the Allied air force cannot get a foothold in central Burma so far.

The latest replay is in, but I won't have time to look at it until after Mother's Day lunch and the Spurs game.

Here's the theory. One SCTF with Kitakami, Oi and 2DDs will move flank speed into Adak. They are followed by another, slightly slower SCTF with Fuso, Yamashiro and 2DDs. The idea is for the torpedo cruisers to hopefully engage the enemy SCTF while the BB force comes in later tear into the transports. The secret hope is that CF dodges his CVEs West a few hexes and we run into them instead. Moon is almost full, weather calls for Rain generally and partial cloud at Adak. As a final effort, we have four subs and a few Vals to throw in.

The biggest fear is getting caught by his CVE Avengers. We have a big Oscar group on LRCAP, and in theory our SCTFs will move out of range before the air phases, but as we all know, anything can happen.

March 19, 1943

Sailor First Class Ichihara Eizo peered into the clear, moonlit night in the Aleutians "Spring." DD Maikaze was the lead ship of a force detailed to attack an American invasion of a rocky island called Adak. Eizo had no idea why anyone would consider Adak worth fighting for, but apparently the High Commands of both sides in this war thought it worth doing. Behind Maikaze came the torpedo cruisers Kitakami and Oi, along with the older destroyer Yakaze.

Commander Nakasugi Seiji spoke to the Bridge in general. "Keep a sharp lookout. We are to locate and engage the enemy covering force, centered around Battleships Mississippi and Colorado. That should clear the way for our Battleships to attack the invasion force."

No one had asked Eizo, but this seemed a sound plan to him. Mississippi and Colorado were older, slower vessels that should be vulnerable to the massed Long Lance torpedoes of the Japanese cruisers. And, if any ship in the Imperial Japanese Navy was right for the job, it was the "Mighty Maikaze," hero of a similar engagement in which the brave destroyer and her sister the Shiranui had sunk the heavy cruiser Australia in the South Pacific and lived to tell the tale. In fact, it was the sinking of the Australia that had found Maikaze in Japan and available to intervene in the Aleutians. The ship was at Kure naval base in part for a refit, but in part to participate in the filming of a propaganda piece.

No one knew it yet, but tonight the brave ship and crew were going to run out of luck. Unknown to Eizo, his Captain and the Japanese lookouts, Maikaze was already appearing as a blip on the radar screen of the USS Massachusetts.

"Target the lead enemy ship - Fire when ready!" With these words, Captain Francis Whiting of the Massachusetts doomed the Maikaze. His words, translated into action, sent a salvo of 16 inch shells arcing toward the unsuspecting Japanese destroyer.

Eizo ducked his head as Lieutenant Bando walked by in the tight quarters of the Maikaze's Bridge. This tiny move saved his life as the ship exploded under the impact of the massive projectiles. From this point forward, the severely concussed sailor remembered only disjointed images of the Naval Battle of Adak, as it came to be known.

Bando was dead... That much was clear. Had to get back to the Helm. What happened? No enemy ships had been reported. Was it a mine or a submarine? The Helm was destroyed, inoperable. Next duty station was the Auxiliary Control.

The night air was still calm, but Hell was all around. Eizo saw Kitakami and Oi desperately turning toward what was now obviously an enemy squadron, torpedoes coming to bear painfully slowly. Just before he went below decks, a second salvo from Massachusetts hammered Maikaze. Blown clear, the helmsman found himself deposited in the water. His beloved ship's back was broken, already sinking. Maikaze was out of the fight only one minute and twenty-nine seconds after it began.

Eizo blacked out...

That he came to at all was a surprise. That he was somehow clinging to a floating piece of debris was even more unlikely. The water was cold, VERY cold. Hauling himself on top of what appeared to be the wreckage of a lifeboat, Eizo wrapped himself in a shredded tarp for warmth and turned to look around, his wits still uncertain. He saw that the IJN torpedo cruisers had launched on the enemy and even now had turned to flee. Eizo wondered whether they would hit anything...

"Turn, Mamie, TURN!" Captain Whiting urged his ship to move away from the approaching Long Lances. He grudgingly had to admit the Japs were good. Caught unawares, they had moved into position for a torpedo attack under fire, launched, and were now escaping into the night. The veteran Skipper was astonished at the sheer number of torpedo tracks headed toward his squadron. Well over thirty fish in the water tested even the powerful engines of the South Dakota class battleship.

One track was left harmlessly astern, then two, then three. Then the huge vessel shuddered as a torpedo exploded well aft. Big Mamie sailed on, but something felt wrong. Even before the formal damage report reached him, Whiting knew his engines were hit. Massachusetts was now a slow moving target.

Floating on his little wreck, Eizo could see in the light of the full moon that the Japanese torpedo attack had disorganized the American formation. What were these new ships that could move so quickly! Clearly not the old Mississippi and Colorado. Searchlights from the enemy probed for the IJN cruisers, but found nothing. However, the lights attracted unwanted attention.

"Fire!"

The terse command, relayed through the IJN Battleships Fuso and Yamashiro, approaching from an unseen quarter, resulted in terrible destruction. Shells rained down on Massachusetts, the heavy cruiser Wichita and the light cruiser Montpellier. Big Mamie tried to return fire, but damage to her engines and rudder left the normally fast warship in a bad position. Her aft turret managed to land a penetrating salvo on Yamashiro, but the Kaigun had found the range, and another hit forced Captain Whiting to order her magazines flooded.

But the USN wasn't out of fight either. Eizo watched in horror as Yamashiro was suddenly staggered by two accurate salvos from a new entrant to the fray, which he later learned was Battleship Indiana. The dreadnought's third salvo hit home as well, touching off the Japanese battlewagon's ammunition stores, resulting in a fireball and shockwave so violent that the brave sailor was knocked off the wreckage that had become his sanctuary. Cold embraced him again... Surely this was the end. The Japanese ships turned to retreat, but as they did so, Fuso defiantly pumped shells into the stricken Massachusetts. Eizo's vision faded as he drifted alone...

"Damn, it's cold," thought Captain Whiting. He was in shock, peering over the gunwale of his launch as HIS ship, the indestructible Massachusetts, slipped under the waves stern first. He didn't know who History would judge as the winner of tonight's battle, but the loss of his ship was already eating into him. He heard something nearby, but couldn't focus.

"Sir? Sir!" said Chief Perkins, another occupant of the launch.

The Captain finally came around. "What is it, Chief?"

"We've found a survivor in the water, but he's Japanese. What should we do?" The Chief's hand was on his pistol, giving voice to an unspoken question.

"Bring him aboard, Chief. Wherever he's from, I imagine he's having a bad night too."

And thus did First Sailor Ichihara Eizo live to see the end of the Great Pacific War.

Yeah, I wasn't entirely pleased by the end of the replay. I misjudged CF - this is no feint! We counted 6 USN BBs present (5 after Massachusetts sank).

Full report tomorrow, but USN planes caused more losses, while the IJN subs did some serious damage as well!

That's a brave move with only CVEs to cover. Fun to read your account of the BBs, especially after recently standing on the deck of the Massachusetts. Looking forward to the follow-up.

I might give the IJN a slightly marginal victory due to the American BB being one of their few fast BBs. Overall, Japan cannot afford to trade 1:1 with the Allies in BBs.

Big battle at and around Adak, as detailed in part above.

Subs

Around Adak: Ha-35, acting as a monitor in Adak, misses a DMS and is sunk for its trouble. I-31 tries to approach the Mississippi/Colorado TF, but is chased off. Later, the same sub is DC'd by escorts of the invasion TF, forced to the surface, and sunk. In the big hit of the day, we guess right and put two subs among his CVE TF. I-3 torpedoes CVE Suwanee with secondary explosions and heavy damage. A second fish in the salvo duds or we might have sunk her outright. Looks like CF has 3 CVEs, one is now hors de combat. We hope to get more tomorrow as we have 4 subs all around them. I-3 takes two DC hits in return and will have to withdraw.

Elsewhere: I-4 misses DD Fletcher near Perth and takes a DC hit in return. I-170 misses a second DD in this ASW TF and takes two hits in return. IMHO a misallocation of his best destroyers.

Saury sinks a PB near Rabaul. A Sally claims a hit on Drum near Formosa.

Commentary: Allied ASW capabilities are improving, as is historical. We will not contest shallow base hexes directly absent extreme need in the future.

5th Fleet

Well, quite a show. As planned, the Kitakami/Oi TF arrives first, but CF had the Massachusetts/Indiana TF covering the invasion - far more than we bargained for! Still, I'm pleased with how our fleet acquitted itself. Massachusetts sunk in the replay, CA Wichita and CL Montpellier suffering heavy damage, and few losses except for the extremely regrettable magazine explosion to BB Yamashiro. Really unfortunate as she wasn't that hard hit and the engagement was winding down. Take away her loss and I'd be thrilled with the result. Still, our first BB lost in the war, while definitely not the enemy's first battlewagon casualty, and he will feel the sinking of a "Fast BB" in its first Op. I like the Fuso class because of all those 36 cm guns. After all, in a Gary Grigsby game, more is better.

The Mississippi/Colorado TF is used in the bombardment role and crushes the small garrison at Adak. Then the Allies invade Adak with all or part of a US Infantry Division, which will easily take the base. BB West Virginia flags the invasion TF.

That means Massachusetts, Indiana, Mississippi, Colorado and West Virginia were involved in this Op, covered by 3 CVEs. This is NOT a feint. We plan to use CF's effort up here against him as will be detailed below.

In the air phases, our Vals try for the invasion TF but are repulsed by LRCAP. Worse, the Kitakami TF is caught out of planned LRCAP and loses Oi and an older DD to a smallish Avenger strike. Kitakami, Fuso and the remaining 2 DDs are in good shape and should escape. The lack of SDBs, the small size of Allied carrier strikes, and the large commitment to this Op generally just about convinces Cribtop Intel that CV Enterprise was indeed sunk at Torres Islands. He is out of fleet carriers. Ouch.

Other Fronts

Not much else to report except that 17th Army marches closer to Akyab, Chengting makes forts 4 and, more importantly, Kusaie makes forts 5.

Analysis

We are now kicking ourselves that we didn't sortie Combined Fleet. They would have arrived right on time and frankly a slaughter would have ensued. This incident teaches us about Cuttlefish, however. He telegraphed this move enough we assumed it was a feint, but instead he exposed his USN fleet to danger that didn't materialize. If he is coming hard in NOPAC, we have evolved a plan aimed to trade our remaining two Aleutians outposts for destruction of the forces currently present up here. Dubbed Operation Riptide, our intention is to move Combined Fleet quietly north to a position where we can react quickly to Amchitka, the next garrisoned island in the chain. We will give every impression that our defenses are weak, hoping to encourage CF to go after further targets up here. If he does, Combined Fleet will pounce in a great position to inflict significant and disproportionate casualties on the USN. If he doesn't come, Combined Fleet should remain unspotted and thus not give him the green light elsewhere.

Subs

I-21 misses a DMS near Adak, is DC'd, forced to the surface and sunk. This was the first wave of invasion shipping pulling out. Frustrating that other subs are in position to attack various USN TFs but fail to engage.

Saury duds on a PB near Rabaul, while the PB she hit yesterday sinks before it can make harbor.

5th Fleet

37th US infantry division and a tank battalion crush the small garrison at Adak with 106:1 odds, destroying a Naval Guard and a small company size base force. The question now is whether CF will press on in the Aleutians or take weeks to retire and re-load for another target elsewhere. He doesn't have the naval power to try multiple simultaneous Ops without undue risk. If he retires, we gain delay. If he comes for Amchitka or Attu, KB will pounce.

SE Fleet

Buka goes to airfield 4.

Southern Army

Carnarvon makes airfield 3 for the Allies - a sign of renewed activity here?

Singapore makes forts 6.

Burma

With the moon at full, we try a night port attack at Madras but results are poor.

BA at Akyab shows raw AS at 2552:531 in our favor. An Indian division and two Indian Brigades make up the heart of the defense. We believe the base is vulnerable and will attack in a few days as soon as our armor cuts off the last retreat path.

China

One of a series of night raids on Chengtu, the last retreat of the KMT air force, gets good results. We are plinking away at his air force and supplies by doing this.

Subs

I-5, lurking on a likely retreat path near Chunginadak Island, finds the damaged CVE Suwanee and immediately sinks her with two torpedo hits. Both air groups go down with the ship, destroying almost 30 airframes, all Wildcats and Avengers. Banzai! CF cannot afford to trade a modern BB and one of his few remaining CVEs for every little island taken. Further, we get two subs into the hex with his two surviving CVEs. Hopefully we will get more attacks tomorrow.

Mini-sub Ha-35 moves into the Adak hex but is caught and sunk by escorts.

I-35 takes two DC hits near Perth as enemy ASW TFs are really trolling our large sub contingent in the area. Time to pull back a few hexes and give the appearance of a withdrawal.

A Sally claims a hit on Drum near Pescadores and our ASW TFs are working over the approaches to Sasebo.

Burma

Today we put up a large Tojo LRCAP over Akyab, thinking CF would hit 17th Army the day after our initial bombardment attack. Instead, he goes for the airfield at Cox's Bazar and we leak over in great numbers. This isn't really a good thing as our pilots tire quickly and have a long flight home, resulting in Ops and pilot losses. Overall a 1:1 performance with 28 enemy P-40, B-25 and B-24 (only 3 of these) downed for the loss of 25 Tojos. We easily have the airframes for this, but lose about 13 pilots, which is not as fun.

Uttaradit makes airfield 1 as the rear area builds up.

Subs

CF wisely dodges his CVEs NNW to a point on the north side of the Aleutians chain, avoiding our subs for now.

IJAAF ASW planes attack both Drum and Snook near Formosa multiple times, claiming one hit on each.

5th Fleet

The enemy navy is still present in great numbers at Adak. If he lingers too long, or tries for a follow up invasion somewhere else nearby, Combined Fleet will arrive and do mean things to him.

Shasukotan in the Kuriles goes to forts 2.

SE Fleet

Aitape hits forts 3, Finschafen forts 1.

Burma

The Allies again pound the CB airfield, which serves our purposes nicely.

Helens go in at Akyab unescorted, which is a bit of a scare, but there is no CAP.

On the ground, the enemy stack several hexes south of Akyab (hex 55, 47) is beginning to withdraw. CF has spotted the danger to his positions in the Arakan. Criptop HQ orders a DA at Akyab tomorrow, which is coming before our armor is quite in position to cut off the retreat path from the base. This can't be helped as we need to take Akyab before CF secures the garrison's escape route. It should take 2 or 3 attacks here, however, so everything should continue according to plan. IMHO, this retreat is an ominous development for the enemy, as his entire Burma invasion is threatened by the dislocation of the coastal front.

Other

Our movement of fuel and oil continues on schedule, draining stockpiles of material at Singers, Hong Kong, Babel, etc. Over the past few weeks we have put almost 300,000 tons of fuel and over 150,000 tons of oil into the Home Islands. Deliveries will continue at this pace until the excess has been drained around June 1.

We screw up and score too quickly.

Subs

No contacts.

5th Fleet

Great Sitkin Island is occupied by the Allied rowboat corps.

CF looks to be pulling out some TFs from Adak, while others remain. But he is withdrawing on a SE course as if he's heading straight for Pearl Harbor. Cribtop HQ hopes this movement continues, as it will lead his fleet straight into the path of KB!

The CVEs dodge south of the Aleutians again. Our subs are forming a line to the East in case he withdraws that way.

Burma

The enemy stack retreating up the Arakan road toward Akyab forced our hand - it contains an armored unit that can zip along the roads and is already one hex away from the escape route. Thus, we order a DA today, knowing our armored regiment won't be in position until tomorrow but thinking it will take two or even three attacks to break the base's garrison. Ummm, nope.

DA at Akyab drops forts to 2 and achieves 10:1(!) odds. The base falls, which is actually disappointing - lack of Allied supply was the culprit. The consolation prize is significant, however. 2 LCUs, including the largest, the 17th Indian Division, surrender. Seven LCUs are forced to retreat. Casualties are a stunning 10455(1439) vs 824(6). Since these are Commonwealth squads, I think that's just short of 500 VPs in a day. Banzai! We will pursue and unite 17th and 15th Armies, hoping to finish off the Akyab stack while doing serious damage to the army formerly posted on the road to the south. I'll get a screenshot up to show the new situation.

Given this result, we wish the attack had been held off until tomorrow, as that would have caused the surrender of another 13,000 troops. Stupid elite 17th Army! Nonetheless, the Allied position in the Arakan just cracked wide open, and the invasion of Burma is now threatened with a long and exposed right flank.

China

We hit Chengtu in daylight for the first time and find some Vanguards on CAP. They annoyingly destroy 4 Oscars, but the bombing raids, both day and night, inflict significant losses to the grounded KMT air force. We will sweep tomorrow, then come back on the 25th with a max effort against the airfield.

In a harassment move, we cut the LoC of a big KMT stack in the mountains East of Kienko. Shouldn't be too hard to re-open it, but this helps to further blunt CF's mini-offensive here.

You might as well talk about the NBA now because in a few months you will not be talking about the NFL.

I don't want to! The Cowboys are so far gone into Jerry's World of Weirdness that I don't know they ever recover. Meanwhile the Spurs are the anti-Cowboys, playing up to their potential every time, win or lose. I've pulled for the 'Boys since I was 8 but I'm so down on them now that when there were brief rumors that the San Diego Chargers might become the San Antonio Chargers, I pretended it would actually happen so that I could briefly dream of a world in which I could legitimately renounce my Cowboys fandom. Ugly place to be.

Subs

A Jake on nav search claims a hit on a sub NW of Kure Island. Unfortunately, this may give away KB's position if CF is paying attention.

Convoy escorts chase off Gar near Toyohara.

5th Fleet

No sign of the Adak invasion fleet and covering forces NW of Midway. We'll push East with KB for 48 more hours, then retire to a point where we can quickly intervene if CF comes back for another round in the Aleutians.

Shimushiri Jima makes airfield 4.

Burma

The Allies hit Akyab's airfield, which, ironically, is already a total wreck due to constant bombing by the IJAAF.

China

Sweep of Chengtu shoots down 8 P-66 for no losses to the IJAAF.

Subs

Search planes from KB once again overfly USN subs. Afraid our cover is blown.

5th Fleet

Ulak Island is occupied by Allied rowboats.

Southern Army

We still have a small army slogging toward the isolated Aussie units at Broome and Derby. No sign of any relief for the enemy before the IJA arrives.

Waingapoe makes airfield 4.

Burma

We have piled a stunning (for the Japanese) 414 engineers and 20 plus engineer vehicles into Taung Gyi. Today we make level 4 forts (recall forts were knocked down to 3 by an Allied DA a few weeks back).

China

We sweep and bomb Chengtu in daylight. There is no CAP and we destroy 4 planes on the ground, damaging more. Given the total lack of flak and thus supply, the damaged planes will never escape.

Quiet day.

5th Fleet

Atka Island occupied by rowboat for the Allies.

Shikuka goes to airfield 3.

SE Fleet

P-38 and B-25s raid the small airfield at Tulagi.

Burma

More Allied raids bounce rubble at the Akyab airfield. We plan to spring an LRCAP trap here tomorrow.

Combined Fleet

The fleet pulls back West to join up with the Oilers. We will re-fuel and sail to Yokohama. This has three purposes: 1) clear SYS damage and complete conversion of the last few CVL air groups to A6M3a; 2) facilitate swapping the newly upgraded Shokaku and Zuikaku for the Akagi and Kaga, which need to upgrade; and 3) keeping KB near 5th Fleet AO in case CF re-loads and tries for another island in the Aleutians.

Subs

Gar sinks an xAKL near Toyohara. Whale sinks an xAK near Amami Oshima. Tambor duds on an xAKL near Sorong.

I-174 engages the small UK DD force that once again makes a mysterious run into and out of Cox's Bazar. Perhaps CF is scouting defenses or hunting supply TFs that will never come (as they are unnecessary).

IJN ASW hunts Sawfish near Hong Kong.

5th Fleet

Ominato makes airfield 5.

We unload an LCU at Uruppu Jima. Etorofu is next and then the Kuriles are at least preliminarily secure, with more to come.

Combined Fleet

KB re-fuels at sea and heads for Japan tomorrow. It will be the carriers' first return to the Home Islands since Pearl Harbor.

SE Fleet

CF pulls off a very clever raid. He correctly guessed I would LRCAP Tulagi after yesterday's attack there and springs a big B-24 assault on Munda today. Caught without defenses, we compound the error by standing down the Betty group at Munda so we could add a Nick group to the LRCAP. Frankly we are fortunate to only lose 8 Bettys and 1 Zero on the ground. The field is damaged but not too badly. We will defend Munda with everything tomorrow, but doubt the enemy returns.

Namatanai makes airfield 4. This base will be used to help defend Rabaul when the time comes.

Burma

Our glorious LRCAP trap fails due to user error. I messed up my settings for a few Tojo groups. Instead of 90 Tojos and 30 Nicks, we end up with 32 Tojos and 30 Nicks. Sigh. CF comes with everything and we fight reasonably well, getting slightly better than 1:1, including a decent haul of Blenheims as we do get through to the bombers. His Hurricanes get the bounce at first - we can assume he has learned to both escort and LRCAP his raids. Japan can easily replace the losses, especially as few IJAAF pilots are casualties. We'll try again soon with even more Tojos - a new group just arrived in theater.

Our armies continue to march in the Arakan. Cribtop HQ wonders whether CF will make a stand just outside Akyab or try to withdraw through the trackless jungle. Neither option seems fun for him.

We are planning an Op to converge on the Commonwealth Army in Burma from 3 sides. 17th Army and the tanks could emerge from the jungle aimed at Schwebo, 15th Army and another 3 division force could thrust at Magwe/Meiktila, and 18th Army at Taung Gyi serves as the Anvil. No way CF can get significant reserves in due to the jungle transit time. He will be faced with encirclement at Taung Gyi or withdrawal to Katha. Lots of prospects for delay here.

Part of this plan is already in motion. We mentioned air reinforcements previously, which include more Tojos, some Vals, a bunch of IJAAF transports, etc. We also have a horde of supply about to land at Rangoon and a concentration of IJA engineers at Taung Gyi that are bumping fort levels by 12% per turn (quite a feat for the Japanese).

China

Unopposed night and daylight raids at Chengtu are starting to take a toll on what's left of the KMT air force. Our recon bombing finds that only Chungking has flak bursts, confirming the poor supply state of the enemy.

Air losses.

Despite the Munda licking we took, total air losses today in all theaters are 38:33 in favor of the Allies, a very acceptable loss ratio.

Subs

Porpoise duds on a Tonan Whaler in the main convoy hauling oil out of Singers. Glad we got lucky here! CF is figuring out where my routes are - time to move things around.

Finback duds on an ASW SC near Donggala.

I-16 torpedoes and probably mortally wounds a big UK tanker full of fuel just off the wormhole near Karachi.

Combined Fleet

Steaming for home and hopefully dropping off the radar.

SE Fleet

Woleai goes to forts 6. Yes, Woleai. Even the back line is digging in now.

Southern Army

Saumlaki goes to airfield 4.

China

Our daily Chengtu raid goes in unescorted and meets a small CAP. Fortunately only one bomber goes down and the raid gets through.

+1

Being a Blazers fan never allowed me to fully appreciate the phenomenal teams over the past 15-20 years down there, but now that the Blazers have fallen apart and I live in Europe I'm finding it very hard not to root for this Spurs team.

That said, the Blazers beat the Bulls with Jordan and Pippen in a game one in Chicago. Then lost 4 straight!
