So. Bought DW recently and playing my first game atm.
I have problem with changing design of the ships. Particularly wanted to add weapons on the mine and gas stations, but for some reason it does not let me add add anything to existent designs. Im choosing ship design and pressing edit to go to ship desing menu but thats it.

Am I missing something or is it a bug?

P.S. What is normal race quantity for the standard galaxy map?

The base difference is, whether you already have any ships/bases of that design built, or not.

If not, you can freely Edit the selected design.
However, if there are already ships/bases of that type built, you have to Manually upgrade selected design.

And afterwards, it is your choice, if you leave the already built ships/bases of that design as they are, or you retrofit them to your changed design.

I've also started playing recently, and I had exactly this problem.

I solved it by using the "Copy as New" option (I think it's called that - don't have the game in front of me at the moment). I'm not sure whether that's what you're supposed to do, but I found it worked fine for me (as far as I know). It basically leaves the old designs in place, but gives you a newer build.

Yes, I believe that works that way.

Additionally, as I just read a bit more, the Manually Upgrade Design button functions similarly to Copy as New, but in addition also obsoletes the old design (to force such ships to retrofit to the newer one).

I don't think obsoleting forces a retrofit (or matters at all in that context). But a obsoleted design is not available for new ships. Obsoleting the old helps keeping various lists tidy, like build lists, and the "non-obsolete design" filter in the design screen.

Ship Designing 101.

To edit a design you need to have 0 Amount of that class, see G, even if it shows 0 if you have a ship in a queue to be built you will get the 'can not edit design' message.

There are 5 buttons that allow editing and the creation of designs.

A. If a design has no ships built or being built then you can edit the current design.

B. The Add New will let you design a ship class from scratch, you will start with a blank slate, choose the subrole, add components and name it.

C. Copy As New will allow you to copy a design so you can tweak it and modify it, for example, you design an Energy research station and wish to have a research station for each type, Weapons, Energy and HighTech, if you click Copy As New on the Energy Research Station you can change the labs from Energy to Weapons, rename it and click save thus creating a new design for a Weapons research station, do the same again for the HighTech station.

D. Manually Upgrade Design is for when you want to add things to a current design, for example, your race starts out with rail guns but you decide that you also want to add epsilon torpedoes to the design, if you click on your design you wish to upgrade and then click on Manually Upgrade Design you will be taken to the design screen the design number will be incremented and you can now add the epsilon torpedoes and click save and your old design is obsoleted and the new version has rail guns and torpedoes.

E. Auto Upgrade Selected designs will upgrade the current design with the latest tech upgrade for a component, for example all your designs have standard fuel cells and you have just researched ultra dense fuel cells, you can upgrade all of your current list of designs by clicking on the first one holding shift on the keyboard and clicking the one at the bottom of the list to select them all and then clicking Auto Upgrade Selected Designs, all the standard fuel cells will then be upgraded on those designs to ultra dense ones.

The area marked F and the red circle will show you what the maximum size of both ship and bases that can currently be built, there are limits for constructors and colony ships as well but that is not shown, you will rarely hit the limits imposed on those designs but it it is worth bearing in mind in you have a hankering for building a dragster colony ship for example. The maximum size for designs is increased by applying research in the energy section of the tech tree.

The red circle next to the G shows the sizes for the current designs so you can gauge whether you can fit the extra 10 epsilon torpedoes that you want to bolt on to the frigate.

Hope this helps, any further problems just ask, and I am sure someone will be only to willing to help.
