I posted in the "Post Crash Info Here" thread a few days ago, but there hasn't been any response. Please help!

I just got this game for Christmas, and I was able to play through the tutorial for awhile, but then it crashed. Then I patched it and tried to play for real. Now, the game crashes after about 5-7 minutes of gameplay. Usually it just freezes up, sometimes the screen goes blank and sometimes it bluescreens, but usually the game stays on the screen and the music continues, or at least keeps skipping. The only thing I can do is a hard-reboot with the reset button.

It does this regardless of what I'm doing or what scenario I'm playing. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, and I have tried playing with no patch, and at each of the patch levels up to the newest with no success.

I have a homebuilt system with the MSI K7T Turbo motherboard running an AMD Athlon 1333 with 256 MB of PC-133. I have a 60 GB HD with 40 gigs free. Geforce 2 MX video, Hercules Gametheater XP sound. I have the latest drivers for everything and I am using DirectX 9. I am running Win98SE.

Please help!
Thanks,
Mark

mholmgren,

I know I may be stating the obvious but have you gone through the 'Troubleshooting FAQ' at:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20438

IIRC hardware sound acceleration (can be disabled by runing dxdiag.exe) caused simular problems. Is yours enabled?

Thanks for the tips. I had tried everything in the FAQ, and I disabled sound acceleration in dxdiag. It didn't fix the problem, but the one game I played lasted a long time before it crashed, so maybe that helped.

Is that problem specific to the Hercules Gametheater XP or to any particular version of DX?

I even began to think it was an overheating video card, so I put a fan on it but to no avail.

Let me know if anyone else has thoughts.

EDIT: Disabling sound acceleration makes the Raven Shield demo run 35 FPS faster than before! Thanks a bunch! UV still crashes though.

... if its after >4 hours of game play it might be a problem with your OS. I'm out of suggestions. I guess you'll have to wait for someone more knowlegable than me or for someone from Martix/2by3 to help.

:) Best of luck and sorry I couldn't be of more help :o

Thanks anyway, at least you really helped my Raven Shield!

UV usually crashes within 5-10 minutes of launching it. My record is maybe 30 minutes.

What else is running in the back ground of your PC? Try to turn off as much as you can. Then see if this helps.

Also who built your machine? Do other games crash?

Mark,

It's probably also worth trying your UV copy on another computer or a friend's machine, if possible, just in the rare case that you have the one in a million bad CD and one of the installation files is causing the problem. However, given the description, I'd definitely guess more along the lines of graphics/sound hardware or drivers. If you have the opportunity, try swapping in an older video and sound card to see if that helps narrow things down.

Regards,

- Erik

Thanks for the tips.

Ross, nothing else is running except the Logitech mouse driver and the control panel for my sound card. No other games crash. I built the computer myself.

Erik, I agree that it probably is related to my PC more than the game because of the randomness. I just installed Windows XP on my computer, so hopefully it will work right. I haven't finished patching the game yet, but I'll let you know.

I installed Windows XP and it appears to be fixed. Thanks for all the help!
