I have been playing for about 1 month now. I have legends patched.

Yet I have never been able to get a fleet to refuel at a resupply ship.

So what is the secret?

I have made resupply ships and deployed them at gas giants with the right type of fuel present then I order a fleet to refuel at the same system and the fleet goes off to another distant (but closest) refueling point. Slow boating all the way because they are out of fuel. Never have I been able to get a fleet to refuel at a resupply ship. So what is the secret? I read the entire help file in the game and no joy there. I feel I am missing something, maybe in the ship design? No idea what to do...

Searched the forums for a resupply ship design format and found nothing on that subject either. Lost need help.

Select the ship or fleet you want to refuel, then right-click on the resupply ship. You will get the option to resupply there.

Fleets can be a bit reluctant to refuel at resupply ships, but you can always force them to refuel exactly where you want to. The key is: Select the fleet, ctrl-right click on the resupply ship, select "refuel at 'resupply ship".

The resupply ship of course needs some fuel in its holds, but I assume you have managed to locate a gas giant with the right stuff. It has to be deployed for refuel to work (I think). In quiet times, it always pays to fill up resupply ships, then you can move them while full of fuel, and not have to wait from them to mine fuel at their future, offensive locations.

This way of selecting refuel location can be useful in many situations where you got an opinion of exact location. Be it troop loading, unloading, refueling, retrofitting. Today I had a fleet to retrofit sitting in the capital system. By default they wanted to use the SSP on the minor colony (closest), some manual clicking, and they went to the large spaceport at the capital instead.

Next question, where does a resupply ship hold its mined fuel? In its fuel tanks or in cargo holds?

IE. When I design a resupply ship for refueling a fleet do I want fuel storage capacity in its fuel tanks or in its cargo holds for this purpose?

The fuel is in the cargo hold.

The AI ships, which works quite well, are a mix of gas mines with more docking bays, and powerful fighting ships. Remember some storage for fuel...

The AI has never designed a resupply ship for me so I have no idea what the design is supposed to look like.
Other than the warning messages when designing one myself. But that does not help me optimize its design.

It does not design carriers either.

But it does create designs of all the rest of the ships as a template which I can modify.

Carriers and Resupply ships require research to unlock.

Resupply ships are opened with Accelerated Construction, a branch from the construction line in the energy tab. It is the bottom main line, and the one you want is above that one, and also unlocks the Bakuras Shipyard wonder.

Carriers are unlocked by the third star fighter technology.

A few more questions about resupply ships.

Can resupply ships refuel themselves, and if so how is it done?

What is the mechanic to fill a resupply ships cargo hold with fuel at a space port?

Is there an in game way to determine the current fuel load in the cargo hold of a resupply ship?

By the way thanks for all the answers guys.

[hint for game developers]
The answers to my questions should be in the in game help menu under the heading resupply ships as info on how they are used in game.
Then I would not have to ask on the forums.

I have never noticed a resupply ship with fuel issues, I guess it can handle its own needs, or mine don't move enough. Resupply ships don't interact with spaceport (usually).

You can look at the cargo of any ship, colony or base. The key is the shiplist/colony list. At the bottom you have tabs, where one is the cargo of the selected item. The quick way to access it, is to select your resupply ship, and double click the selection panel (lower left). That will open the ship list with that ship selected.
