I will play BARIS 1.0 in Historical Roster and Historical Model.
And will play with the two sides trying to reach the moon in two different aproaches.

Spring 1957

With so small decisions early (in BARIS), the USA start R&D with Atlas rocket and Explorer and soviet side start with R-7 rocket and Sputnik. No more activity this season.

Fall 1957

President Eisenhower make a speech. The president think the space race would be completed with two human flights in LEO, no more. The URSS, however, get a german engineer to speed up the R&D.

-November 1957: Explorer I
The USA decide launch the first orbital satellite with Atlas safety % only at 63 but get a complet success!

Thanks Blind Sniper.

Spring 1958

USA get more budget for this season thanks to a Private funds. It's time to recruit the Group I of Astronauts; Grissom, Shepard, Glenn, Carpenter, Schirra, Cooper and Slayton.
Mercury capsule was initiated and scrub the Explorer II to save money.
By your side, the soviets get another german smart man and also recruit seven cosmonauts; Nelyubov, Gagarin, Titov, Nikolayev, Popovich, Bykovsky and Komarov. The Vostok capsule start R&D.

-May 1958: Launching of the Sputnik II the first soviet satellite. The R-7 push the ship into the air but suddenly the second stage fails and a huge explosion rip the rocket during ascent.

Fall 1958

USA get another 13 millions to the budget. They are very welcome. Money was spent in more R&D of Mercury capsule and Atlas rocket. The soviets use their money similary, Vostok capsule and R-7.

-November 1958: Unmaned launching of the Mercury I to improve R&D. As usual in first launches, the heat shield fails and the ship desintegrates during descent.

-December 1958: The russians launch the Sputnik III but again, the R-7 rocket's second stage AGAIN fails miserably and the ship is destroyed.

Spring 1959

The Atlas rocket factory has a delay in build the ship to mount in the Mercury II (another capsule unmanned)so no mission this season. Same with the other rocket in development, the Titan. Grrr. Use the money to build another Pad in Cape Canaveral.
The soviets spent the money to better safe ratio in the ill-fated R-7 Semyorka.

-May 1959: The Sputnik IV is launched. The R-7 works well and this is the first satellite in orbit to URSS.

Fall 1959

The Group I, the first seven, graduated in basic training. This is another season without rockets so spent the money in Ranger probe.
In the soviet side more problems with R-7 and more money to maintain the safe ratio up. Baikonur had now another Pad.

No launches this season.

Thanks!

Spring 1960

Finally the Space Agency get the rockets and R&D is improved in Atlas and Titan. If everything is ok expected to make the first manned flight end of year.
Some setbacks leave the soviet space program with small budget this season. With this problem the politburo give a order: the R&D must center in Vostok capsule.

-May 1960: Launching of the Mercury IV, unmanned capsule with a monkey named Mike. To general surprise, the monkey returns without a scratch. Gus Grissom will take the seat of the monkey next time.

-June 1960: The soviets counterpart is the Vostok I, unmanned. This is a mission with small safe ratio so as expected, the heat shield fails and the capsule is incinerated.

Fall 1960

While the american scientifics make a new nuclear rocket (in the news), the "real" titan rocket is almost ready to first launch.
The soviets panicked because the KGB inform that the americans are first in the race so the politburo give more funds to Korolev.

-September 1960: First flight of the titan rocket with the Ranger I aboard. Flyby to the moon. The mission is a espectacular success.

-October 1960: The Vostok II, the second unmanned soviet capsule is launched and is the first to be safe recover in plains of Siberia.

-November 1960: Finally, the first human in history is launched to the space aboard the Mercury V. Virgil Grissom make a perfect suborbital flight and a perfect splash down in Pacific Ocean. The americans go straight ahead in this space race.

Spring 1961

More problems with the Titan, and more money to save safe ratio. Spent the money recruiting the Group II, the nine; Young, McDivitt, White, Conrad, Stafford, Borman, Lovell, Armstrong and See.
The soviets get more money this season and use them to start the R&D of the Proton rocket.

-January 1961: Second suborbital flight in the Mercury VI with Deke Slayton at controls. The flight is carried away without problems. May be would be more smart make a orbit but the flight was planned last season and i prefer no speed in this moment the steps.

-February 1961: The soviets make same with the Vostok III and Yuri Gagarin, another suborbital flight and also with success.

Fall 1961

A group of congressmen visit Cape. They seems very pleased with the work, however, after return to DC, pray for cut the funds again to space program. The agency spent the money in EVA Suits and Titan Rocket.
The soviets are now almost the same level of USA.

-October 1961: Launching of Mercury VII, first orbital human flight with Gordon Cooper. Everything was ok and Cooper complet a duration A orbit mission. But, after the de-orbit burn, the flight goes wrong. First a complet shut down of comunications and second, the catastrophic fail of the heat shield. Cooper is incinerated in reentry.

-November 1961: The soviets launch the Vostok IV, a single orbit mission with EVA. The cosmonaut Komarov, acomplish the objetives without problems and return to earth safe.

-December 1961: The second USA launch is the Ranger III, a probe to Venus flyby. It's a success. A happy ending to 1961.

OBSERVATION: Before start the play i choose do not use the save option, so expected a lot of catastrophic missions and deaths. BARIS was and is a hard game.

I started my first "serious" game today and I'm doing the same thing, no failure so far but I never start a mission under 75%, difficult on level 1 although.

After a very good start (first in the orbital satellite launch) then I started to achieve an impressive amount of failure missions, in fact every first mission was a failure and I lost several astronauts in the process. Then another thing that I have to learn how to manage, is the astronauts theyself, they became quickly demotivated (damned first ladies )
In the 1969 I resigned.

Time to do a new game!

Anyhow, I'm playing with "Race Into Space" 1.0.0 I don't know how to patch it, any hints?

Spring 1962

The Mercury VII disaster modifies the USA program acordingly. There will be necessary repair the Mercury capsule to again reach the orbit in LEO but besides is time to start R&D of Gemini. This fail also forced some pilots as Carpenter to abandon agency.
Spent some money in program another probe to Mars to get some prestige, now vital to continue race against russkies.

The soviets find a mechanic problem in Vostok capsule. The ship fall 20% in safety so i must scrub the flight of the season. Nelyubov, very upset for this reason, decide return to Red Army. The soviets recruit the Second Group of cosmonauts.

-May 1962: Launching of the Cosmos I, probe to Moon flyby. The Proton rocket in your first flight was ok but the ship suffer a complet shut down of communications just prior the trans-lunar burn and makes inert in solar orbit.

The picture shows the Proton launch.

Fall 1962

The Group II of astronauts is graduated in basic training.Spent the money to repair Mercury safety and make ready the Gemini.
In the cosmonaut news, Titov has announced retirement for personality conflicts.

-October 1962: Launch of the Ranger IV probe to Mars. The starship will arrive in two seasons but at least the first part of the voyage was ok.

-December 1962: The Mercury IX with Glenn at controls clear the tower in Cape to first orbit mission after the disaster of the Mercury VII. However, the spacecraft is far to be ready at this point (i decide to make the flight with 77% safety). Just after a orbit the fuel cells fails and the mission control aborts. In the reentry the heat shield lost 25% safety..but Glenn, God blessed, make a perfect splashdown.

Spring 1963

Grissom has announced retirement for a business oportunity. Carpenter has retired this season. The agency give resources to the new probe Surveyor and the docking module. The objective is focus in unmanned Gemini docking flights and manned to duration C and D. Recruit the Group III of astronauts.

The soviets had a bad season. Leonov is killed in a training accident so all manned missions are canceled to allow new inspections. Besides, Beregovoy fail in the basic training program and is retired.

-February 1963: Last flight of the Mercury program in the Mercury X, with Schirra onboard. The mission was duration B and EVA. Schirra's EVA was ok but a malfunction in systems again cuts the duration to A and the capsule returns safe to earth.

-March 1963: The unmanned Gemini I is launched to training systems in the new capsule. The mission was a success.

SCHIRRA'S EVA.

Fall 1963

Due to a test failure, engineers have downgraded the safety factor of the Surveyor program in 15% Eisele fails in the basic training and was fired. The boosters program had a delay and will be impossible flight a Gemini unmanned docking mission for a while.

The soviets get new cosmonauts while Komarov has announced retirement to join the Great Red Army. The soviet space program spent the money in Voskhod capsule and makes it ready to flight, however, no cosmonaut trained to this mission, more delays...

-October 1963: Launching of the Vostok VI, last soviet single manned mission. A duration B and EVA with Nikolayev at the controls. The mission was a success with only a minor problem in landing, when the ejection seat no separated from cosmonaut and had a hard landing.

-November 1963: Launching of the Surveyor I, first probe to land in the moon. Bad start anyway. Communications are lost and the erratic burn causes payload to burn up in reentry.

-December 1963: The soviets launch the Cosmos IV, a Moon flyby. The mission is a success.

Spring 1964

The space program has a mechanical error with the Titan rocket...again. It will cost more money to repair or a loss of 5% safety factor will occur on the next rocket mission.
In the astronauts news, Slayton has announced retirement for political ambitions.
The soviets no get more luck this season. Due to corruption and budget error, a large amount of funding is lost, does mean 10 mb. Gagarin gain a retirement as ordered by the kremlin.

Both sides are this season challenging to first probe lunar landing and two person orbit mission. It’s a crucial season.

-April 1964: Launching of Surveyor II and another disaster. Loss of guidance and telemetry and the probe burn up on reentry.

-April 1964: It’s time to URSS. The Luna I try same objective. The Proton rocket launch the starship to the moon and Luna aproaches and land without problem. A great success.

-June 1964: The Gemini III is launched from Cape Canaveral with McDivitt and Young. It’s the first two persons mission duration B and EVA. In the second orbit a premature burnout causes a engine performs below minimum thrust requirement. In spite of this, the capsule splashdown with the astronauts in safe.

-June 1964: A couple of days after Gemini’s Flight, the soviets launch the Voskhod II in a similar mission but this is a unmanned flight. The mission was a success.

Fall 1964

The space program announced today that it has managed to recruit a top scientist from a major corporation. R&D will improve from this development. The Group III is graduated from basic training. The problem with the Gemini capsule causes the Gemini IV scrub mission.
In the URSS, the gulags have re-educated some scientist so will be improvements in R&D.
The Luna II is cancelled and the budget will be focused now in manned programs and docking module.

-November 1964: Launching of the Surveyor III. The NASA needs a success mission because the budget is now very low. The starship makes a trans lunar injection but again guidance failure lost the mission in solar orbit.

-November 1964: The Voskhod III, is the first soviet two people manned craft. On board two cosmonauts, Belyayev and Feoktistov . The sickness of the crew forces duration to A and the capsule return safe to earth after a small number of orbits.

Spring 1965

The Air Force has submitted to congress a proposal for a manned orbiting laboratory, or MOL.
This season, NASA will focus on Surveyor and Gemini. Next season will be a huge effort to reach a orbit unmanned docking.
The world is in a Frenzy over the soviet space program so the Politburo decides to add 15 MB to the program this year. The soviets use this money to recruit the Group III of cosmonauts.

-April 1965: The soviets launch the Voskhod IV, the first unmanned docking mission in history. No docking in all. A premature engine burnout causes craft to skip off atmosphere and return to space. On its next orbit, it reenters but out of control.

-April 1965: The USA launch the Surveyor IV, another try to reach and land in the moon. This program is the great fiasco in the space program. The four flight is another disaster. The guidance fails again and the payload fall to earth and disintegrates.

-June 1965: Launching of the Voskhod V, another unmanned docking mission. The mission was a failure and the cause is the same last flight, a engine burn failure.

-June 1965: The NASA launch the Gemini V with Shepard and See onboard. It’s a duration B mission with EVA. The flight was perfectly done however the EVA must be cancelled to a communications malfunction in the suits.

The NASA situation is as bad as seems.

Fall 1965

The Space program engineers have announced today that a potential failure mode has been discovered on the Gemini Program. This was noticed during a systems check and will help avoid this failure during a mission.
The astronauts Glenn, Schirra and See has announced retirement for personal or family reasons.
The budget is very limited now. The NASA focus in docking flights. No more.
In the cosmonaut news, Filipchenko was a physical washout and is retired.
The URSS is facing the same problems as NASA, two planned mission but only money to one. The planned unmanned docking mission is scrubbed and the duration E mission continue.

-October 1965: Launching of the Gemini VI the fist of the two unmanned docking missions planned this season. The mission was a success.

-November 1965: The Voskhod VII go to LEO from Baikonur. A duration E missión and another fiasco. Just after reaching orbit, a total loss of communications occur and the mission is scrubbed. Shatalov and Volynov return safe to earth.

-December 1965: The Gemini VII, the second unmanned docking go to orbit. All docking attempts have failed due to a computer programming error.

That's why you need to put Buzz in all those missions that involve a docking!

Spring 1966

Studies have been released on the realiability of capsule landings on the plains of Texas after returning from the moon. The impact of a ground landing will be slightly harder. McDivitt has announced retirement for business opportunity.
The Budget problem increases and the time runs. Start with Apollo capsule but for this reason and the future and present flights, it’s impossible, by the moment, R&D the Saturn. No money also to probes.
The soviet side: The ministry of science has announced that an additional duration mission E will be required before any lunar landings will be attempted. This is a very remarkable optimistic vision about the soviet space race...
Anyway, the comunist start with the Soyuz capsule and planning some probe to inner planets to get prestige.

-February 1966: The USA try to get a giant push with the launch of the Gemini VIII and the Gemini IX. A joint docking mission in LEO. First to flight is the Gemini VIII with Conrad and E. White at controls. After a ordinary launch (all rocket+boosters in 88% safety factor), the rocket disintegrates during ascent and the crew is dead. Obviously, Gemini IX is scrubbed. This is the major disaster to date.

-May 1966: Launching of the Voskhod VIII, a unmanned docking capsule. All docking attempts have failed due to excessive fuel consumption.

Fall 1966

An X-15 air force pilot flew to a new altitude record of 53 miles. After reaching the altitude record, the air force major safely glided the X-15 to a landing at Edwards air force base. The last disaster causes a immediate concern between NASA pilots. Shepard, Glenn, Schirra and See abandon agency.
The disaster of the Gemini VIII has left the safety ratio of the Titan in 42%. It’s a huge setback to agency because this rocket is now the only rocket usable to any possible flight. All future flights are cancelled and must spent the money to Titan.

In the soviet side no better news. There is a 20% loss from the safety factor of the Soyuz capsule. Well, it’s a hard game. May be the best option in this moment is abandon but..anyway was only a play to remember old sensations..bad sensations.
The Group III of cosmonauts graduated from basic training.

-October 1966: The Voskhod IX go to orbit in another unmanned docking mission. The payload suffers a power drain and communications are lost.

-December 1966: The probe Cosmos V is launched from Baikonur to Venus flyby. The mission was a success.

Spring 1967

The USA space program was honored today by a visit from the prime minister of England. Imagine was a surprise to prime minister see no future manned flights planned...
The season has two unmanned flights, and the Titan is now at 83% safety. Many in NASA are fingers crossed and praying. The Apollo capsule is almost ready to test flights.

The soviets suffer another disaster when a major explosion destroyed all rocket fuel reserves for the season. May launch only one mission this season. In the cosmonauts news, Yegorov has announced retirement for health reasons.
The news of the NASA Gemini and Titan disasters had reached the Politburo. May be now they had a very real opportunity to reach before the moon. To this objective, all the money is spent in the new N1 Rocket so during 1967 no more flights with be possible.

-April 1967: Launching of the Gemini XI, another unmanned docking mission. Docking attempts have failed. Craft is wildly spinning and docking was impossible.

-May 1967: The soviets launch the Voskhod X, a manned C Duration Flight with EVA. The mission, with the cosmonauts Shatalov and Volynov was a spectacular success. Is the first duration C flight with happy ending.

-June 1967: Launching of the Surveyor VI . Probe lands on the edge of a crater, tumbles two hundred meters and is destroyed.

Fall 1967

Anti-space activist have been successful in their drive to cut back the space program budget. Congressional leaders have voted to decrease the funding by 20 mb. Two more desertions, Cernan and Bassett announced retirement.

This season was planned to see the first three person flight in Apollo but the rutine of disasters cut back the budget and the flight is scrubbed. Gemini manned program is over but continue in automatic docking missions.

In URSS severe storms have damaged the Primary launch facility in Baikonur, it will cost 15 mb to repair the launch facility. In this moment i’m very upset...and i hope the future SPM will be different. It’s simply absurd a ratio so hard in bad news, it’s a very miracle to see a good news in any season. Shatalov and Khrunov has announced retirement relocation to Siberia...great!
The soviets are also without money so no flights this season and simply increase the safety factor in Soyuz.

-November 1967: The only flight in this season is the Gemini XII, another unmanned docking mission. And another fail. Payload is momentarily on, but a computer glitch causes a permanent shutdown.

I agree to the point in the above post.
As I recall in the original the rate of failures were so great that it took the fun out of the game. You too are rediscovering this.

Please please plead to the programmers of the new title -- give us a chance.....Better still an option which massively reduces the risk of mission failure.

Thankyou
