I am trying to only deal with custom state ship designs but i am currently playing a game with 400 stars, huge sectors, and few colonizable planets. This makes for a very long distance between stars and my planets. I have been designing the private ships to have a huge amount of fuel so they can travel these long distances, but i dont want to manage them anymore.

If i move to full automation of private sector ships, is the AI smart enough to build ship designs with very large fuel storage in order to meet the long travel requirements of the private freighters?

Nah, I am pretty sure they used the fixed fuel cell count of their design templates.

As long as you have decent hyperdrive, decent storage and reactor it should have enough distance for all combinations of settings. It will only increase fuel cells to a certain point, which is based on what the available construction size is. After that you'd have to extend range through tech advances if leaving design automated.
