Anyone have a record for your most damaged ship that made it back to Pearl or Tokyo in one piece?

Some of you may remember my eariler tale about the heavy cruiser USS Chicago. During my current PBEM game with Drex the ship entered action with one of my carriers (I think it was the Yorktown) in September 1942. She was assigned to the Yorktown's TF as the force gave battle with the Japanese in October. First she took a torpedo hit from a air strike, but it was'nt bad damage. Then after Yorktown had her air squadrons destroyed the carrier headed back to Luganville, but the Chicago was dispatched to help protect Lunga. I had very little in the way of capital ships at the time (and no battleships yet) and Drex was sending down bomardment fleets on a semi-regular basis. In late October 1942 the Chicago and her fleet engaged in a few naval battles with the big boys of the Japanese navy (battleships) and was very much beat up on.

After the battles I was amazed at the pasting the ship had taken. Over 30 shell hits, some from 16 inch guns. Plus three torpedo hits from destroyers. Add that on to her eariler pre-battle damage. Her superstructure must have been a mess. Half her guns were knocked out of action. Engines totally destroyed. Gaping holes in the hull. System damage was 99 and float damage was 50 and increasing, plus small fires.

At the time, Lunga did'nt have a size 4 port so she slowly headed to Tulagi (well, only one day) and then docked. She made it with 99 system and 72 float damage. She sat in port for six weeks, while the float damage was repaired and the enginears tried hard to get some life out of the battered engines. Every day I expected Drex to bomb the port and sink the ship, cause one bomb or torpedo hit would have finished her. He either never saw her or did'nt consider her worth trying to break through my CAP.

Finally, in mid December 1942, after six weeks of repairs, she was down to 94 system damge and I could get (gasp!) TWO knots out of her! As no escort could be spared, she headed to Noumea alone. The trip took two weeks. I knew of a Japanese sub attacking near Noumea -- a light cruiser was fired at -- and hastily sent out a fleet of SC's to meet her. No sub attacks. She docked in Noumea on 12/30/42 and was sent back to Pearl the same day. It will take 209 days for her to reach Pearl -- seven months. I won't see her again this game, but it's still a amazing tale.

If that was a Japanese ship she never would have made it. :)

The 200 days to pearl, does that mean that she is fixed in 200 days or is she just getting there.

Repaired? I thought that was just the travel time back to Pearl, and then it will take more time in Pearl before it becomes 'available' again.

Mogami is correct in that is the time for the ship to be repaired and back to action at Pearl. Then you just have to talk Pearl into sending you the ship back. Tha's the most annoying thing so far I have run into with the game. Unless things are going badly, Pearl won't send you any ships, Then what ships you do have keep getting dinged up, but you don't dare send them to Pearl as you may not get them back.

Okay, whatever. Just does'nt make sence that crippled ships would get all their damage fixed during the trip back to Pearl or Tokyo and steam into harbor ready to go back out the next day. Not that I've seen that happen, but it seems the ship should also have some 'repair' time before it becomes avaible to send to you again.

I believe the time includes transit to Pearl and spending time in the yards with the time given is when she will be back at the naval base repaired.

Here is a copy of a PM that I sent to a friend here a while back. Check it out for yourselves. Ought to clear up a few things, and maybe others can provide data for the classes I haven't mentioned.

This data is not complete, as not all classes have been tested.

The formula will always be as follows:

# x Systems Damage +11 for the Japanese.

# x Systems Damage +19 for the Allies.

The numbers 11 and 19 represent the number of days that the ship will spend in transit back to Tokyo or Pearl, and seems to remain constant regardless of damage or top speed.

# will always represent the number of days taken to repair 1 point of systems damage.

Examples:

Japanese ships damaged during tests:

DD Kazegumo 47 sys dam upon leaving Truk, 58 days before she is available again. 1 x 47 + 11=58.

CL Naka 24 sys dam upon leaving Truk, 35 days before she is available again. 1 x 24 + 11= 35

CL Agano 18 sys dam upon leaving Truk, 1 x 18 + 11 = 29.

CA Tone 85 sys dam upon leaving Truk, 2 x 85 + 11 =181.

CA Ashigara 23 sys dam upon leaving Truk, 2 x 23 + 11 =57.

CA Mogami 50 sys dam upon leaving Truk, 2 x 50 + 11= 111.

You can see the pattern emerging, but in larger ships, depending on the class, the # value can vary.

BB Nagato 21 sys dam upon leaving Truk, 5 x 21 + 11 = 116.

BB Haruna 29 sys dam upon leaving Truk, 4 x 29 + 11 = 127.

CV Kaga 31 sys dam upon leaving Truk, 4 x 31 + 11 = 135

CV Shokaku 37 sys dam upon leaving Truk, 4 x 37 + 11 = 159.

CV Soryu 54 sys dam upon leaving Truk, 3 x 54 + 11 = 173.

CV Hiryu 29 sys dam upon leaving Truk, 3 x 29 + 11 = 98.

(which is why I love Hiryu and Soryu.)

Allied ships damaged during tests:

DD Hull 35 sys dam upon leaving Noumea, 35 x 1 + 19 =54

CL Achilles 28 sys dam upon leaving Noumea, 28 x 1 + 19 = 47.

CLAA Juneau 32 sys dam upon leaving Noumea, 32 x 1 + 19 = 51.

CA Indianapolis 45 sys dam upon leaving Noumea, 45 x 2 + 19 = 109.

CA Chester 49 sys dam upon leaving Noumea, 49 x 2 + 19 = 117.
(Note: Chester had an 8 in. turret destroyed and the # value didn't change.)

BB No. Carolina 77 sys dam upon leaving Noumea, 77 x 5 + 19 = 404.

BB So. Dakota 16 sys dam upon leaving Noumea, 16 x 6 + 19 = 115.
( Note: So. Dakota had a 16 in. turret destroyed and the # value is 6.)

BB Colorado 16 sys dam upon leaving Noumea, 16 x 4 + 19 = 83.
( Note: All of the pre-war BB's have a # value of 4.)

CVL Princeton 38 sys dam upon leaving Noumea, 38 x 2 + 19 = 95.

CV Lexington 38 sys dam upon leaving Noumea, 4 x 38 + 19 = 171.

CV Enterprise 12 sys dam upon leaving Noumea, 3 x 12 + 19 =55.
( And you just gotta love THAT!)

And that's all of the data that I have.

it takes 4 days to repair system damage? Where are you docking your ships?

The Yorktown is anchored at Nomea, and (I just loaded the saved games to check this) on the 8th of September, she had 14 sys dmg...and on the 2nd of October, she has 12.

I have 14 ships at anchor right now, that is the lowest number during that time, is that why? I didn't think that made a difference.

Hello OG, I don't know if you're addressing my post or not, but if so, let me apologize for any confusion. The formulas that I am developing apply only to the repair yards at Tokyo and Pearl Harbor where the rate of repair is constant. If you were to send Yorktown back to Pearl Harbor right now with 12 systems damage, she would be available to you again in 55 days. Now getting her released and into convoy and on her way back to Noumea, is another story altogether. You're looking at 75 days total at best.

As to the numbers behind the repair rates in theatre, I haven't a clue.

Ahh, I thought you were using the number of days to repair while anchored for the formula. That was pretty good thinking to come up with that, I must say.

Not really. I'd be amazed if the old timers around here hadn't figured it out long ago, and since PBEM is all the rage around here, this levels the playing field a little bit.
