I have Warp field precursors. By all appearances, the Ackdarians don't. We're good buddies, so I want to trade warp field precursors with them. Unfortunately, warp field precursors does not appear in the technology list on my side of the diplomacy window.

I was able to trade it with the Kiadians fine. Is there anything that might prevent trading that(or any) technology?

My guess is, they need to discover the monolith in their system first before they can begin researching the basic warp tech. And thus they cant trade it either. Your Kiadians prolly had discovered the monolith already but either didnt begin the actual research yet or were in the middle of doing just that.

Does that apply to the AI empires? What if I already investigated all of the ruins in their system first?

I think the warp tech ruin is a special case and the local empire can always discover it even if another has been to the ruin. Otherwise it could create a rather unfortunate position of having a player empire unable to discover warp technology because a pirate popped into their system and scanned the planet before they could get close. That is my theory at least.

As for not being able to trade for the warp field, I guess it's because of the special restrictions. The game sees it the same as a technology that someone doesn't have the required previous technology for and as such won't let you trade it. It may seem unrealistic, but it's no doubt an important gameplay vs realism issue; You don't want pirates offering up that tech to empires at the very start of the game thereby making the whole pre-warp situation a bit redundant.
