I frequently find my hidden pirate bases being destroyed in mid-construction when even a single assault pod manages to hit the planet and knock it down. I've tried countering this a number of ways, including deploying multiple defense bases with point defenses to shoot them down, but they still get through (they launch the pods when already on top of the planet, rather than at the distance, so no time to intercept). Maybe if one creates a ring of defense bases with warp inhibitors to catch ships before they land nearby, but the costs involved are hardly feasible...

Has anyone found out any tactics for countering these insta-kill raids against hidden pirate bases being constructed? Or is the only countermeasure simply to exterminate pirate factions that are at war with you?

EDIT: Great, on top of that problem, it turns out my OWN SHIPS are also raiding the planets I'm trying to build fortresses on -- thus my own ships are also destroying my fortresses. I can't find any option to disable raiding in automation settings... any way to stop this, save turning off all automation on warships?

Personally I've found that using weapons that bypass shields is much more rewarding in this aspect. If you can kill their engines before it gets to the planet, they're dead in the water and awaiting a quick execution.

Even if it is just a single escort, those things can take quite a beating when doing suicide runs towards planets (I really think raids should fail if their boarding ships are killed - where the hell are they going to take the loot after all?)
