So, I just built some planetary defense units as I have been getting raided constantly on one of my planets. However, I am very confused.

Aren't these units supposed to be great defenders? Why, then, do my experienced infantry, who cost only 900 in maintenance, have a much higher defense rating (12,640 defense) than my green planetary defense units (7800 defense), who cost a whopping 3600 in maintenance?

Is there some hidden bonus you get from using the defense units?

They can shoot at cause extra damage to drop pods

I think they also give +25% defense grid bonus

Ok, so that would provide a planet wide bonus for defense, is that correct?

Still, even with that, that's a pretty hefty price tag!

Design-wise, they are the most effective units at preventing enemy troops from actually landing on the planet or weakening them before they start fighting the rest of your forces They hit those troops landing in assault pods quite hard and unless countered, give your entire force the +25% Defense Grid bonus. When upgraded, they can not just damage but potentially shoot landing troops out of the sky, making a planet much easier to defend against all but the largest invasions.

Regards,

- Erik

Thanks for the clarification, Eric. I think I see now what their intended purpose is. More as a defense support unit to support your existing army.

But keep in mind while defense units are great at anti-drop pod defense and give you that +25% bonus, if the enemy has a large army and/or armor units, then the balance shifts again.

Armor = strong attack
Infantry = balanced
Defense units = strong anti-air, defense bonus
Spec Forces = counter to defense units

See each unit has a role to play.

So Shark on your transports what balance to you make up for invasion fleets?

50% infantry
25% Armoured
25% Special forces

Unless you are doing something else (which I would love to hear..)

Also I make an "invasion Fleet" which consists of 6 Transports (each have 6 troop carriers), 2 Carriers and 4 Cruisers...

This is my typical fleet for a planet unless its a homeworld in which case I might send 2 or 3 of the above fleets.....

I am not sure there is a point in that much infantry on an invasion fleet. I would bring some along to be garrisons once the battle is won, but otherwise maybe more like 50% armor and 25% of the others.

I may be off, though :)

Yep, I just use the default when I get all types of troops.
