Hi,

I have just started my adventure with DW and must say the game is great, splendid refreshment after nice though sometimes oversimplified Endless Space. Other side of the coin is that on occasions I am missing some crucial pieces of information, which I was unable to find in Manual or Galactopedia (nor after a brief search here).

For instance, where can I find more elaborate description of buildings? I see that my space ports have something called "... plant", like high-tech plant. What do they do? What capacity means in this context?

What advantage gives space academy? It promises more chances to get a scientist, although I would like to know the number - whether it is closer to 10% or 30%.

In Pre-Warp era, for which size of space port should I go? And what would be the indicator that I need to upgrade it to a bigger one? I guess that is a question about relation of different components - which purpose again is not always clear to me - to my economy.

Methinks I read already most of guides, including "One Thread To Guide Them All", but none could answer these questions. Any hints will be much appreciated!

I can answer a couple of bits of that...

Plants manufacture components for ships and bases - there are three kinds which build components from that area of the tech tree (e.g. fuel cells are researched in the hi-tech tree so they are built in the hi-tech plant). Last time I checked the capacity divided by 100 was the total size of the components that the plant manufactured in a six day period. For the first couple of games it is probably easiest just to use the standard designs (or use them as a template). Then start varying to see what effect it has.

I would start with a small space port in the pre-warp era. The signal for me to upgrade is that the docks are not handling all the incoming ships and some are being diverted to the planetary docks. Other reasons you might want to upgrade are military (more weapons/shields = better defence) or if your ship building capacity is lagging - but be aware that ship building from the private sector comes in bursts and having a bit of a queue for a while means your yards will not idle for as long before the next glut.

Have fun.

Thanks a lot! That already answers two question. Now what's left is the science academy bonus.

Is information on buildings characteristics stored in some readable format? I read the guide for modding, but did not spot any entry that would point to colony improvements.
