I was highly dissatisfied with the vanilla backdrop, since it's low resolution and not really inspiring. I was on my way to download Baleur's mod when I realized that all the links provided were broken ... so I decided to make my own.
Basically it's a part of the nebula Eta Carinae (can't post link as a new user, just search "eta carinae hubble") which was also used in Baleur's mod which I cropped, flipped over and heavily edited.

Now my image editing skills are very basic, but I did something special that Baleur didn't: I blurred and retouched EVERY SINGLE STAR on the nebula, confusion with real life stars is no longer an issue.
I also erased most of the unnecessary details of the nebula because I found them very distracting and sometimes a bit misplaced since they were of very high res and planets on and next to these details looked odd. Also edited the brightness, tint and contrast (among other things) to make every elements of the game more than visible.

INSTALLATION: very easy actually, just put it in root/images/environment and replace the original picture, you can also back it up if somehow you don't like the details of the nebula. Image is in 2482x2482 resolution (due to cropping).

TIP: This backdrop is best used with spiral galaxies, though it looks very good on others too!

QUESTIONS: "your backdrop is gorgeous! Will you make others?? Please!"
Well I might, just depends on how many people wants it. I made this one for myself and it can take time before I make another (if at all)

"This is terrible work, literally, you had no clue on what you were doing seriously, look at the coordinates X50 Y127 you forgot a blank pixel in the middle of nowhere, also I can't see **** with your color treatment. Good job, you edited thousands of stars but you're still retarded. Gay."
I totally agree. Nevertheless I'm thankful for your download

NB: I know my english is understandable but I'm still french so be indulgent if I write awkwardly!

EDIT: UPDATED: Now it works! Marvelous
EDIT II: Here is the full image for the lazy people like me who wants to see the real thing before downloading it. I'm terrible at previews so here you are with the whole. I know the embedding is way too big but anyway, I'll take down the "preview" if asked to (or accept my punishment for subtle trolling)
EDIT III: Link to download is 3km/1.86411miles down, alternatively you can right click/save as.

Thanks for your effort! But indeed, there is no file included.

A brotherly bit of advice...
I did download this because I do like it, but please realize that certain things will be hard to see on a backdrop like this. I know because I use one similar to this; I like yours better.
If you have a way to dim it down a little, I think it would be more helpful. I do not dim my down only because I love the fantastic colors, but it is very difficult to see some of the stars or the points of interest or if there is a cloud of somekind.

I do like this and downloaded it and will use it.
Thank you!

Thank you. Sterling piece of work, just as the poster .2 light years above pointed out, a little to bright in some areas. It is now part of my main backdrop.

Ive sorted the brightness out, just took this as the main image and used 'galaxy_backdrop_OLD.jpg' (the brown one that came with DW) as a second layer and then used the brightness from the second layer and applied it to the first with an ever so slight merge. Next I wiped out the 3.15mb file size, (image is still 2482 x 2482), it is now 156 kb (tad smaller with the zip). This is absolute genius, shame I had to dim it but as it is now it really brings the main screen some much needed clarity, the nebula(?)areas (where the research stations live) really look the mutts nuts, Im using it on an Irregular map setting.
Thanks again for making this.

Link for download is .1 light years below the image if anyone wants a copy. Mediafire link, file is in a .zip. (Its only 1024 x 1024 as a preview on here so dont use that)

Wow Darkspire, very nice modification you did there! A bit too dark for my taste but I like it! ;)

Thanks for the good words! I'll maybe do another when Shadows will come out!

@Sirian I'm using parts of your resource mod and I love it! Keep up the good work!

It was still too bright for me. (I'm having troubles in Shadows with contrast on the galaxy map.) So I took Darkspire's version and darkened it again.

(Star_Eraser you have every right to be appalled. Hopefully it will prompt you into posting something juicy.)

A link to the dark version, 2000x2000 pixels.

let there be dark

Its amazing how many things turn up you forgot all about, thanks for remembering this one, I much prefer this backdrop. Yours is really dark, you must have your brightness setting way down?

I think you went a bit overboard with the dark there...

I like it. When I look out into space I see it dark, not like a supernova.

[But mainly I did it because I was losing things on the galaxy map. For example in my last game, after having explored about 1/3 of the galaxy I 'rediscovered' 3 gas clouds about 1/4 of a sector from my homeworld. I say rediscovered because I saw them early (prewarp, I assume) but when I looked for them once my colony influence expanded they were not there and somehow I convinced myself that I must have misremembered the ones a sector or so away (which also had a somewhat different configuration... should have known). They were only rediscovered because I clicked the colony influence off and then went to brush that fleck of dust off my screen, oh wait. For confirmation after turning the colony influence back on I looked for them (knowing almost exactly where they were) and could only, and with great difficulty find one of the three. I was in the centre of a spiral galaxy so the background was a lot closer to white than black ]

here.

That would be because folks are displaying the backdrop image from the,

Distant Worlds\images\environment\galaxybackdrops

Folder, not an in game screen shot. As previously mentioned, it really is an individual taste and how your monitor displays the image, some folks like them dark and some light. Each to there own.
Adding your own image and tuning it to your liking graphically can make a lot of difference for reading the main screen fully zoomed out.

Is there something going on?
When I DL these they arrive as 2482x2482 pixel. The game allows 2048 as max pixel size for the backdrop according to the crash report.
I can resize them, but above it is stated they are 2000x2000, not the 2482x2482 I end up with.

edit: feelotraveler's "let there be dark" is a proper 2000x2000 after DL.

I never had any problems using the 2482x2482, I should imagine the DW engine scales it if need be, I shall amend the offending zip and put the sizes next to them

Edit: Updated the backdrop links in the Repository to reflect the size of the backdrop

The error was something to do with the .XNA loading the backdrop and being limited to 2048 pixel.

But thank you. Hmm Maybe I need a XNA update or something
