Hello guys,
I have been surprised that my Tojos have done as well as they have even against p47s. I will say that in my PBEM we are playing with best maneuver band as max alt. I think it is the best way to go. In my opinion the allies still have the advantage later (p47 still sweep at 30k while most of my fighters are capped at 20k) so it is not overpowered but it gets rid of the ridiculous 40k sweeps. The other thing is that in this game I played very conservative. My goal was not to win but to have a nice game that gets into 45, as Japan I just want to see a game go as far as possible. Of course I try to win every engagement, I try to win but it is not my most important goal in the long run. I made a real determined attempt to minimize pilot losses and to maximally train pilots. It is jan 45 and the majority of my front line fighter groups are well over 80 exp. This may be normal for you guys but for me this has been a feat and it has really made a difference. So the results I am getting for Ki44 IIc is with 80+ groups. That being said, my Ki84 groups are also over 80 and the Ki44 seems to just as good in most cases particularly CAP.

I think the big thing is maintaining very high skilled pilots rather than the airframes themselves.

I still haven't found an answer for night bombing though. By the time you get anything that actually works (J1N1 Sa and P1Y2-s) the allies don't need to night bomb anymore. In my games the night bombing peaks around late 43-early 44.

That would be an interesting rule to try out. Much more realistic involving the sweeps, but early it could be an issue for the Allies even more I would imagine. Some planes are severely restricted by that rule. Many Allied airframes like the P-39 and some P-40 versions would be at 10k I think. The Ki-61 would be tough to use as well.

I don't tend to use lots of 80 exp pilots in one unit. Maybe only 2-3 unless it's KB, then about half. The rest are evenly distributed between 50-79 exp pilots most often. I'm sure this means Jocke's good sweeping groups just get better, but I can't risk losing half of my 80 exp pilots in marginal airframes now when the Ki-84r is coming and that can actually get above Corsairs, Spits and all but the P-47 and Hellcat. So in a few months tactics could radically change for me, and those airframes might deserve my best all in a few groups to make a stand somewhere. We'll see.

Always fine to say anything here. If someone's carrying info out and elsewhere I can't do anything about it and strategic bombing tactics would probably be a good way don the list of sensitive stuff. But it is interesting that he tried it once at Hong Kong and it worked very well. I think he didn't wait to see long enough as the fires took a few days to knock things down lower.

While he nailed HI in the big spots and LI even in a few places, it's been a bit sporadic as well. Georgetown, well within range, is happily still running its 50 HI untouched while Bangkok is completely wrecked. Fine by me!

I do notice a massive difference in China now that Hong Kong, Canton, Sian and Lanchow have been bombed. Supply is running low without doing anything, and I've luckily just finished most fort building and turned that off. All HI is struggling to find enough fuel both in Manchuria and the bits left in China.

Yeah, from now on supply is going to be an issue in your game. Production of it firstly, but then security of it as well. Since supply can be bombed, it isn't something that you can stockpile with impunity. I note that I spent considerable time in Armageddon spreading supply around so that it couldn't be targetted. As you know, it tends to pool in certain bases ...

I've been very aware of it for the past few months. After the recent crisis with factory changes I think it's solid now for a while. Even Gifu is holding steady, and I've been able to top up Burma, the Marianas and now the PI.

During the rest of 44 I'd like to stay conservative with supply. Only shipping it out when absolutely necessary from the HI. Letting a bit of a surplus build up. I will undoubtedly have more airframe and engine factories to change out, but at least there aren't as many R n D factories left to repair.

Once the oil centers in the DEI are closed and stop producing supply It'll begin to really hurt.

I think it evens out well. I seem to remember that some early Japanese fighters are actually capped by the rule at 15k and later fighters like the J2M are capped at 15k. I may be wrong but in my experience, the air model doesn't get really wacky until you have fighters at 40k. For example my opponent now has p47 and others that can sweep at 30k as per our rule but my J2Ms still seem to do quite well against them at 15K. Much better than a previous game where I was maxing out my alt to try and deal with 40k sweeps. However, the rule may disadvantage the allies early against a better player than me, I don't know.

In my game I have been able to build up exp by having a pretty deep training program and in how I use my units. Later in the war my best pilots fill out kb and units that are used purely for CAP and the occasional mass sweep, those units are ~80 av exp. These special CAP units also get the best airframes Then I use special escort groups that have all pilots around 50-60 exp. The system has worked incredibly well I think. A good example are my Ki45 groups, even in this very inferior airframe I have three in tact groups (well one has upgraded to Ki102 so far) that are all over 80 exp, that is to say every pilot flying a Ki45 in my game is 75 exp or higher. Even in this plane which is massively inferior by 44 they have been very successful, even downing Corsairs and p47s. This current game has shown me just how powerful pilot skill is. The drawback is that I probably have fewer active air groups in the field. Had I been more ambitious in the first year I may not have enough to cover everything. Even now I can't really cover everything. However, in this game I am very happy in how I managed my air forces. Where I have failed is in other areas, primarily logistical details and I have had some bad luck in naval engagements as well as some early strategic goals left unmet. I still have much to learn before I will be any good at this game.

You should AAR the endgame. It's a really good process to understand it all better, but also to show others what is going on in 45 for the Japanese. There aren't many around in that era.

Yeah, I think the 35-42k sweeps are the ones that routinely get the 7-10:1 results. I'd love to see the difference changing our HR to a lower altitude band.

Yes. I find that doing an AAR really helps me with my thought processes. When I'm actually clicking about in the game I do a lot of things intuitively, writing about them helps me realise what my subconscious mind was doing.

Yeah, and from turn to turn it keep me in some focus on the details as well. I would have a tendency to forget many small things. Now I just forget 3-4 a turn.

11 - 14 August 1944
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

S/SW PAC: Just a few days after another division is landed at Talaud-eilanden the base falls easily. This is a blow, as the forts were only ever reduced on the final attack and it was still possible to have gotten more into the base. There was no chance though as the Allies have too much to bring from the reserve if there is ever a sticking point. I'm sure either Mindanao or Manado is next.

DOWNFALL: It's beginning to feel like the ending. How does Japan continue to fight against such odds, such speed and overwhelming power?

I've begun to feel everything past Indochina is in danger. I'm not sure, to be honest, of how to deal with this. Do I begin a massive withdrawal now in the hope of having some defenses set up along the Indochinese coast, into China, and not completely lose the troops in forward positions? Can I secure oil shipments for a few more months from Palembang if I do this? I've begun withdrawals from Burma and the Andamans (which haven't yet been reconned to see this) and I'm expecting a massive push to fill in the void once it's clear the coastal defenses are lessening.

SUBS: Another few of mine lost, and one Allied seriously damaged. His subs are chasing the crippled CVs back to the HI, but aren't on the right vector, so will likely miss them. In 2-3 days they should be safely in Nagasaki.

NORTH PACIFIC: A transport fleet runs over and sinks the I-3, looking to be moving to Dutch Harbor. At last some movement here. At least the port there is messed up for him, so it'll be a bit slower.

S DEI: Troops are still missing from Darwin with no sign of a move here. Retreat is in full effect as all troops are pulling back to Kendari, Macassar and Lomblen. I'm leaving some on Timor indefinitely. Surface fleets are pulling back to Balikpapan and Soerabaja.

BURMA: A bombing of Rangoon takes down 7-10 bombers from flak. It's not going to make much of a difference now, but it's good to see that working. He then bombs Pegu troops, crushing the brigade there and taking out about 20% of it's infantry disabled in one day, even with level 6 forts. Sillyness.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Getting some sigint between Hawaii and Wake. Something big coming. Marianas again?

The pace is getting too fast to get any defences in place now, and LBA is beginning to cover all approaches. The final stages of the war have arrived. Time for a new way of thinking, again? The only hope is one of desperation. Kamikaze activation could come soon.

S/SW PAC: Danger!

Jocke has moved his CVs and an invasion fleet near Zamboanga. There is at least one invasion here, but maybe more, and it's in a really difficult place for the defense to deal with. So far this is looking like a brilliant campaign in the Molluccas and beyond by my opponent. I've decided to go all-in again in the hopes that something goes our way, either weather, CAP dispersal and ineffectiveness or simply some kind of lucky break. Like two CVs running into each other and sinking!

The map below shows what's up. I'm even turning on the new not completely trained Peggy (T) from Manila at 12-14 hexes. The main strikes should come from Mindanao where I've got over 150 DBs, with about 70 TB from Iliolo. There are some 100 Frances in both Manila and Balikpapan that would be at max range, but could be involved as well. I don't have much hope, but I have to try here, otherwise it's retreat all across the board from Sumatra to Burma. This might be once of the biggest turns of the entire game!

I've just started it running.

And .... the invasion is at Cotabato!!! I've just moved a division there and that is much closer to Manila and other LBA. ...

INVASION: Arrrrgghhh. All strikes so far going in piecemeal and getting nowhere. One 500kg bomb on a CVE, but of course none attacking the transports. That sucks.

Ok. Three Sallys that were on ASW just went for the transports and there is NO CAP but nothing else is hitting them. Eight CV of the KB should be within 7-8 hexes and should be able to hit those hard. Plus all of the 2E TB from Manila. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Still in the morning phase. .....

HA!!! Finally something hitting!!!!!!!

COTABATO:

The KB comes back for the afternoon and manages a few more APA and AKA sunk with minimal losses to the strike planes. LR CAP does show up but the KB pilots do well punching through and even take a few defenders with them.

Tense moments now as the troops at Cotabato come to about 650 AV, a division and a brigade, with 3 forts. An RF gun anti-tank unit is nearly there and another brigade could arrive within a few days.

Well, this is the first time in a while when I've actually gotten to a few of the invasion ships. Doesn't look now like many troops were lost, if any. Still don't have the reports yet. In fact this is odd. There was no auto-bombard, the one time I would want that to happen. So strange. So I don't still know exactly what is here.

The amount of combat ships in the hex with the Allied Death Star is staggering. In the invasion hex as well there are at least four original TFs plus now about 3-4 cripple TFs.

SUBS: Some Es near the KB sunk the Seadragon as the screen for the invasion reached almost to 8 hexes, but not quite. There are about 11-12 subs in the area now.

In the shaky moments of realizing this was on I skipped any updates on the past few days. The only major event was a torpedoing of the CVL Bataan near Biak. Couldn't put it down though, and it might have gotten to safety.

COTABATO: I won't list all of the shots at the Allied CVs, which were numerous and futile. Around 550 planes lost on the day, and it's not clear whether we've even slowed anything down in spite of thinning out his landing ships. Without the auto-bombard I'm wary here, as he must be. I anticipate he'll bombard tomorrow, or just try to land more to see if the auto kicks in. That's the usual method anyway for the Allies lately, especially after he's gotten the rocket ships, which took out about 1000 IJA casualties this turn.

So I'm air-lifting part of a garrison unit and a brigade into Cotabato to see if I can show it up, and sending the brigades from Davao and Dadjangas as well. There won't be time most likely, btu just in case he's very disrupted I'll give it a shot. I had two more brigades 4-5 days out of Cagayan, so this is unfortunate timing, but I'm getting used to that. One will form the first defensive line in Indochina while the other will still try to sneak in.

NORTH PACIFIC: Some kind of activity here with a clutch of ships around Dutch anchored by some fighter heavy CVE. I won't be trying for any of these.

S DEI: Still just moving troops here. No moves by the Allies.

BURMA: I trid a bombardment at Toungoo which shows two things. One we have about 2300 AV to his 7000 AV! Wow. With the level 6 forts it should be fine. The other thing is that he's moving toward Chang Mai into the jungles off road. This will take a while I imagine, and I'll keep bombarding if he keeps moving. Slow things anyway. I'm not sure what he's planning, but that is a long maneuver if he carries it through and should give me that much more time to begin the full withdrawal from Burma.

CENTRAL PACFIC: No sign of anything yet, but at 133, 99 there is a blip that is consistent with the others we've been getting moving across the Central Pacific. Emilys from Ponape and Truk are searching the area as these ships move into range tomorrow.

Air losses on the day. Not a complete catastrophe, but not great either. I can at least move all of the groups back to recover. On the day about 250+ pilots lost with another 150+ missing. That will hurt.

The Empire Strikes Back!!!

PI: It's been a while since I've used this heading (PI), but I'm obliged to now as Jocke has landed on Mindanao. Not without some consequences, though.

At last, after many missed opportunities, the KB comes through with an 8 hex strike!!! Jocke moved in to protect bombardments and the troops at Cotabato, probably also to keep troop additions to a minimum, and he paid a price this time. The conditions were ideal as the arm of Mindanao made it impossible for him to move any closer, so I was able to calculate the strike distance to 8 hexes for Cotabato. I hoped to catch any late arriving transports dropping more troops, firing rockets and generally creating havoc. Instead he moved the CVs up even with the base and they were in range!

During the night two bombardments hit the base, one from a SAG of cruisers, the other the fast BBs including new addition Richelieu. These started fires and generally softened up the ground troops.

Jocke sent long distance P-38 sweeps to Cotabato followed by 4E to hit the ground troops. These were supported by the CV CAP and still the defending fighters did okay, getting about 1:1. The Jacks especially ate up the P-38s. In fact the first sweep, after just re-watching it, was dominated by the Jacks and Georges against P-38J and F6F-5, even though at first the Allied planes had an altitude and numerical advantage. Interesting that the numbers in the report aren't even close to those in the animation, and there must have been LR CAP set over the base in addition to leaking CAP.

Ouch. I wish I could say this is unexpected, but sadly it fits into my expectations. The Zero just cannot stand up to the allied fighters which are now getting into 3rd gen and it is a 1st gen. It is a HUGE hole in the IJN air and even the Sam by the time it arrives is dated ... but at least it is servicable. George/Jack are 2nd gen and ... yeah, we know.

As for the ground losses ... what fort levels did you have in place? My units generally survive naval bombaments a bit better IF they have at least lvl4 forts.

PI: The first LBA strikes of the morning were limited due to the losses suffered the day before. LBA came from Manila, but just small sections of what was set to fly. The Frances were escorted by only 49 Oscars even though I'd hoped and planned for them to be escorted by around 120 IJN fighters in range and on closer to the target. No go. Three get through to go for the Franklin, but can't make anything stick.

Then the first Peggy (T) strike of the game arrives, but it's only 6 of the nearly 70 at Manila. These are new groups with only 35-40 exp and 50-55 skill, so that's not too surprising. What is surprising is what happened. The Osacars did their job and died to get ONE Peggy through. It hit the CV Bunker Hill with one TT and got a damage to engines message!!! That is a good beginning for the Peggy (T)! This became important later in the turn as well.

PI: Then the KB strike arrived.

Less than 100 zeros punched 110+ DB and 60+ TB through to the Allied CV fleet. The results were much more than I could have hoped, if not what I would have liked to see. We hit mostly CVE with only the previously slowed Bunker HIll (4 x 250kg) and the Intrepid (2 x 250kg) taking damage among the fleet CVs. The CVL Unicorn looks to be in dire straits as well after taking 5 hits, mostly 250kg, but I think 1 x 500kg as well. This is where the D4Y4 pays off big, and I wish all of my groups had been able to upgrade.

The afternoon strikes were small and relatively ineffective. I had hoped for more here, but his CAP was still strong (170+) and there would be no free shots. The second wave main strike brought 56 zeros with 24 Jills and 4 Kates. The Kates were the only bombers to get through but made good use of their shot and put 3 x 250kg penetrating bombs on CVE Shah, leaving it crippled or sinking. Too bad no DBs showed up for the afternoon. Not sure why not. Maybe the distance of the strike.

A few of the CVL look bad, and a good number of the CVE should ave trouble making it home. It is a long journey back to any kind of repair facility, and I hope some well placed night strikes and some subs can continue to take a toll. I'm curious about the Bunker Hill. It was left obscured by smoke. That seems a good sign, but with Allied damage control, it'll most likely pull through. Still, even if it makes it back to Hawaii or OZ it's going to be a long repair.

This CVL should be in trouble as it has no armor at all. Even 5 x 250kg bombs should make it a slow cripple if not sink it outright.

PI: The day ended about like it began.

Strikes against our troops by 4Es were only moderately effective, and we took out a good number of them, at least 12-15 on the day.

The Allied troops onshore at Cotabato apparently were not too disrupted from the landing and they DAed immediately, getting the base with a 10:1 attack. This will make Jocke feel the sting a bit less, and it will make this naval victory very short lived. A good base on Mindanao right now means everything is in danger all through the area. I'll start retreating to Cagayan and pulling the air HQs out, but keeping a big CAP active. In a week this island will be untenable for basing aircraft.

The one thing I feel good about here is that this may slow the progress of the Allies a bit. At least he'll think twice now about a move to Indochina soon, and that could give me more of a chance to both retreat troops and get oil/fuel out to the HI for a bit longer. Maybe I'll even be able to get the pools up for the next round.

Aircraft Ki-83 advances R&D (8/45)

Losses: Too bad. Just didn't imagine he'd move up, but I'll take the loss for the much more important gain.

Loss of DD Ume on Aug 19, 1944 is admitted
Loss of DD Kuwa on Aug 19, 1944 is admitted
Loss of DD Maki on Aug 19, 1944 is admitted
Loss of SS I-15 on Aug 19, 1944 is admitted

Ships Sunk: I would think a few others would be on this list by tomorrow.

CVE Kasaan Bay is reported to have been sunk near Cotabato on Aug 19, 1944

Air losses are again high, and in spit of the possibility of picking off stragglers, the KB will move back to Manila to try to replenish and leave that job to the LBA.

Some planes are lost on the ground, obviously from CVs going under, and it is definitely more then the one CVE's worth. How many is it?

19 August 1944 (continued)
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUBS: Our ASW hit the Pargo and the Tambor with good shots, but not lethal ones. The departing bombardment TF hit the I-15 and put it under for good. Four more subs are in the area and two more on the way to try for cripples tomorrow. Extensive night search will be added but it's 3% moon so no guarantees of even finding them. Only a few of these subs have their new radar upgrades.

PI: Finally orders are set for the day. The strike groups are all shattered except the half-trained Peggy (T) groups from Manila, and they will stay active at 13 hexes toward Cotabato in case anything is left or something new moves in.

The KB, eight CVs in total plus two SAGs and some ASW will move back to Manila. I'm not ruling out a charge by the US fleet CVs, although I think it's unlikely. I almost sent the KB back to the HI to regroup, but I scoured up two IJAAF fighter groups to add to Manila's defenses plus about 100 A6M, 25 Geroge's and 50 low moral Oscars. So the CAP should be strong enough to take a strike.

A crack TT Emily group is at Davao and will be on night attack along with about 50 Jakes, 30 Jills, 10 Kates and 25 Helens. Another 20 or so Emilys are searching restricted to this vector and also turned on TT attack for the night. I've had little luck with this so far, but here goes nothing. Gotta try. The Frances groups from Manila will be used tomorrow if they recover some moral. I hope something flies and at least gets to these ships while they're vulnerable. Even being forced to maneuver could increase their damage.

NORTH PACIFIC: Something is moving here but with all of the excitement I forgot to even look at it!

TOTALS: Allied ships likely in danger:

Confirmed Sunk

CVE - CVE Kasaan Bay, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage -------- Confirmed sunk by a later strike.

Heavy Damage

CV - CV Bunker Hill: 1 x torpedo, Bomb hits 4, heavy fires --------------------------------- 4 x 250kg

CVL - CVL Princeton: Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires ---------------------- Fuel storage explosion
CVL San Jacinto: Bomb hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires --------------------- Fuel storage explosion
CVL Unicorn, Bomb hits 5, heavy fires, heavy damage --------- 4 x 250kg, 1 x 500kg

CVE - CVE Natoma Bay, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires --------------------- Ammo storage explosion
CVE Tulagi: Bomb hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage
CVE St. Lo: Bomb hits 3, heavy fires
CVE Ommaney Bay: Bomb hits 2, heavy fires ------------------------------ 2 x 500kg ---- Ammo storage explosion
CVE Casablanca: Torpedo hits 2
CVE Fanshaw Bay: Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage ---------------------- Fuel storage explosion
CVE Shah: Bomb hits 3, on fire ------------------------------------------3 x 250kg
CVE - CVE Kadashan Bay: Bomb hits 1, heavy fires ------------------------ Ammo storage explosion

Moderate Damage

CV - CV Intrepid: Bomb hits 2 -------------------------------------- 2 x 250kg, one a belt armor hit

CVL - CVL Cowpens: Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 1 ---------------------- (no messages)
CVL Langley: Bomb hits 2 --------------------------------------- 1 x 250, 1 x 500kg

TRACKER: The point tally for Allied ships lost changed quite a lost from the 18th to the 19th:

18th - 876 ships: 10327 points

19th - 882 ships: 11057 points
--------------------------------------
6 ships - +730

So. A CVE is what, 87 points? 87 x 8 = 696, so it's not all CVE. The Unicorn is worth 166. The US CVL are worth 139. Bunker Hill is 378. After trying a few combos I can't make any of these numbers add to the right amount, and it's entirely possible that ships hit yesterday sank as well. Oh, and there is one DD, a Fletcher, also listed sunk. Who knows?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Unicorn is unlike the RN fleet CVs in that it has NO armor anywhere. This should make the 1 x 500kg + 4 x 250kg hits pretty close to lethal. I didn't see any Brit planes lost on the 'ground' yet though.

That's a great strike and victory! Congratulations
So you too had your moment of glory after some painful attacks! It seems at least 2,3 CVE are in bottom from lost planes , I don't trust too much in Points for sunk ships cause they're affected from fow.
In next turns you'll probably see some more of them go to the bottom, the damages are heavy, good fight for your subs too!

Jocke wrote an email after seeing the replay.

Here is what he said:

Just watched the replay! Finally got that fantasy strike in again eh? ;) I was a bit anxious about that....But its still all good! I´ll happily trade a few CVEs and a couple of transports for Cotabato. I think I might have a few to spare... ;)

I´ll try to get you the turn a little later but I need to sleep before thinking about that. I know it might be hard to believe but this turn was a massive, massive milestone for me and I´m just going to let that feeling of accomplishment wash over me for a while! :)

This is from my AAR:

Land forces on Mindanao.
This might be the most optimistic goal of them all. It will require that the Moluccas are secured no later then September/October. I really need to secure PM fast in order to get moving. Rabaul will be bypassed if needed to buy time.

When I wrote that in my AAR it was November 16th 1943 in our game. I had all but given up on the game and was really struggling to find motivation to play on. I´m actually getting a bit emotional writing this. Must be the lack of sleep! ;)

There are two things I´m very proud of in our game. The 1st is the air war. This is the second one! So I´m going to head to bed now and sleep soundly and happily. :)

I hope he wouldn't mind me posting this. Our conversation and the long process of going through a game like this together, through the disagreements, the humor, the camaraderie, the frustrations, anguish and loss and on to the exultation of accomplishment; this is why I've so much enjoyed finding a PBEM partner like Jocke.

I truly appreciate what he writes here and I think this is a milestone for him as a player, to understand and put into practice the larger strategic goals even in the face of tactical material losses. It was hard for him to move past the CV losses of the early game and find a new direction. I think he really began to weigh the strategic over the tactical in his bombing campaigns over Burma and Rabaul, and put it into play with his campaign across New Guinea. It's been fun to watch that growth of a player, and try to match it. He's taught me a lot about what it will take to play the Allied side and when I do I will be indebted to him.

He has pushed me to become better and think this way as well and I feel this is a milestone turn for both of us in a way. I was all about destroying things when this game began, and although this turn too is about sinking some ships, I now see this very differently than when I began this game nearly two years ago. We've each gained and lost so much, and that is opitimized in a turn like this. Each of us achieved some of our goals. His are clear from the above. For me it's more complicated. As the game moved on it's been exceedingly difficult to give ground painfully and steadily, to lose more and more of my fighting units in a seemingly futile effort to slow the lighting advances of the Allied masses and their quality equipment.

Now I feel I have a much better understanding of what is possible, and I believe that this futile process teaches so much about persistence and accomplishment. So while I lost an exceedingly important base I was able to take a small payment for that loss, and that helps to see the next layer of strategic possibility emerge. The desperation of the Japanese Empire in 44 is very apparent, and yet I can still make choices that slow the process, that conserve both resources and material, and occasionally I can take something back on the way. Maybe some of those tithes can be more painful, and this turn shows me that at least they are still possible where I think previously I'd resigned myself to the idea that it was all a long downhill with rarely a bump.

Anyway. This is a great process and I've got some new motivation again to keep fighting on.

Thanks!

Yes, as I wrote above it's a double-edged turn, with the Allies now firmly ensconced in Mindanao. This simply takes his capability back down for a month or two to the level where he has to worry about what my LBA and CV power can do and makes that invulnerable feeling the Allies can have in late 44 come into question a bit. That might be the most important aspect of the day. I've found perception of strength can keep your opponent wary, make them take more time to prepare, make them bring more and not set up multiple ops that are each partially guarded.

So lets hope that I can deal with the next stage of fighting the masses of LBA that will appear here shortly The Allies should drive on Cagayan and begin island hopping soon. Manila will no longer be a safe haven and all repaired shipping will move out shortly. A few upgrades are happening, some up to 15 days left, so I'll have to put up a big CAP and hope for the best on those.

An IJN CVL, would of course be doomed 90% of the time from fire. Allies though fight fires too well, particularly in '44. I'd say 50:50 on this, especially as I note there are no secondary explosions in the report ....

SHIP REPAIR
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Here is a look at what is happening to the CVs damaged in the recent battles. They've moved to Hiroshima/Kure and are installed pier side there now. The repairs are extensive and long, but not catastrophic. It looks like the Kaga will be just over three months while Akagi (in her third stint in the yards for extended periods) will be slightly less than three months.

The Yamato and Musashi are a different story. Anyone committing to building these ships also must think about how much time they will eventually spend in the yards for upgrades and repairs. They've done two upgrades this year for over two months total in the yards and now it looks to be another set of many month repairs. The Musashi will likely be five months while the Yamato could be 6-7 months. Just out in time for a final suicide cruise in spring 45!

The IJN has still not lost a BB however. Miraculous. Still not sure if they'll be worth having at this time of the war though at all. We'll see.

The CV Hiyo is still at Manila about to be let out of peirside. She will also head back to the HI, to Yokohama. her repair will likely be 2-3 months.

I guess the other thing to consider is that there is a LONG trip back to any shipyard for all of these ships. So at least for 4-6 months most of the more damaged CV/CVL will be out. The CVE can likely be repaired closer I would guess.

At this point in the war even damaging ships can mean they never come back. This is something I have to keep in mind as I see the repair times for some of mine. If you add on a 3-4 month journey both ways to a 4-6 month repair, then that is out until mid-to-late 45.
