With all this talk about battleships, I'd love to see a company tackle a Jutland era game. Always wanted to play the High Seas Fleet in that puppy.

Amen to that. North Sea 1914-1918. Might be necessary to change a few things, like allowing for interceptions at sea, but these guys could pull it off if they wanted to do it. A tactical engine would be nice too.

A much improved "Fighting Steel/Action Stations" style tactical game would be the way to go, with a strategic phase to instigate combat. Would be fun to work on, too.

John Tiller just came out with a Jutland and Tsushima games. I Havent bought either, been too busy playing UV. It might be worth looking into though. IMO, his CW and Napoleon games were quite good for the time.

Tillers Jutland game is schite, pardon my French.

Don't have time nor energy to elaborate this right now. Just avoid Tillers games - my humble suggestion. Disgrace to NAVAL wargaming.

PS. OTOH, Norm Koger works od a 3D real time naval gunnery game I have GREAT expectations for. He's planning to tackle Tsushima first, so we'd be having two Tsushima games released within, say, 6 months.

Hi Oleg,

I've been watching Norm's webpage from time to time for the past months but there have been no updates what so ever about his 1904-1905 Japan Russia War game. Do you have any details or know where I can find it?

Oh and I agree with you 100% about John Tiller.

Goodnews is that this game is not very much alike UV/WITP engine, the way I see it, but should be exactly what Tillers Naval campaigns series aspired to be (but failed miserably).

Anyway we're slipping off topic fast. But look at those juicy screenshots in their 3D glory! :)

O. (who still thinks TOAW is Olymp of all Wargames, followed closely by some of Grigsby's designs)

Oh and to answer your question: I agree that TOAW 1 and 2 are both superb but there simply is no game like a Gary Grigsby game:)

Saw the title of the thread and flashed back to the C-64 days and the computer version of Avalon Hill's "Dreadnought" ....
to think of what became of all those classics I "had"... :(

Imagine...a computer game actually on something called a "floppy disk" instead of a cassette tape!!! (probably just a fad ;) )

I still remember the Cassette Tape drive I had on my first computer: an Atari 800. I have moved a number of times since then but still have it packed away somewhere.

Also, the Atari 800 was my first experience with Gary Grigsby. I had an aircraft carrier game that he did (on a 5 1/4inch floppy). I think it was called "Carrier Strike". You could play the battles of Midway, Eastern Solomons, Santa Cruz and one other(can't remember which one). Thinking back, that game was pretty sophisticated considering the level of computer technology at the time.

I cut my teeth on the C-64 also, but my first war games were the ones that Gary did with Microprose and also the wonderfull SSG series of games. I was lucky enough to get the IBM versions of the SSG games with a CD collection of wargames from SSI back around 99. Once I got a IBM in 1992, Pacific War and Carrier Strike were my first wargame buys.

And I had several games on cassette tapes. Talk about SLOW! I could go make a sandwich and watch a TV program while that sucker loaded.:D

TOAW, is a classic. Just wished Talonsoft would have given the rights back to Norm so he could have updated it. IMHO the editor with its revolutionary event engine was one of the best ever made. I would love WitP to have an event engine in its editor, but I dont think its likely.

There MIGHT be a possibility for this. Quoting from Norm's message on another board:

All may not be lost. I heard from Chris Mate at Take-2 over the
holidays, and the current official line now seems to be that they will be happy to release any updates I have. Since I heard that I've been snowed under with work, but I plan to look through my archives to see just what updates I had actually tested enough to release before putting the code to bed. It's been so long since I looked at the stuff that I'm not quite comfortable with just lobbing all the updates I have out there. Hopefully I can find the time to look into this sometime this week.
