I'm playing a campaign as the Soviets in 7/41. Gerry is attacking me across a river. My men have mercilessly slaughtered their assault in hordes; 2nd battle of the campaign and B0 already has 22 kills. The problem is that one of the objective clusters is on the other side of the river with two of the hexes taken. Soon, I'll be able to retake them. The only problem is my guys won't resort to the rafts. I've tried scouts, engineers and infantry, but they don't turn into rafts. I thought all I had to do was ram them into the water but nothing happens. Is rafting only available to those on advancing missions? I looked in the manual for the word 'raft' and while there is some data, there's no instructions on how. The way the scenario was laid down, I couldn't cross the river unless rafts will work, or I had thought that I would need to purchase at least one barge. Thanks in advance.

When a battle is generated and a wide river is used, SPWAW "knows" that rubber rafts are needed. Sometimes what looks like a wide river is not - it can be a bunch of deep water hexes. SPWAW does not recognize this as a wide river and will not issue them to the troops. So what you need is a ford (shallow water) or similar in order to cross. If there is not a place or two to cross and you have no rubber rafts available, this would be a good thing to pass on to the author of the campaign. If it is a generated campaign, then it is an anomoly that will mean you just don't get to take those last 2 hexes.

What you can do (I've done it anyway ) is to open the map in the editor and press the 'n' key, and suddenly all infantry units are equipped with rafts.

Well, as I said before, thanks guys. As to some of the things y'all said, I haven't looked in absolute depth, but I've the feeling there are no fords (it's only a forty wide screen). It's a generated campaign game and the enemy has used rafts, but mine will not. Perhaps noone has ever thought of giving Soviet troops the ability to hit the rafts, or noone had cause, when being the victim of an assault, to hit the rafts? I still wonder if the problem is that people on defend missions don't get them. One my first battle I had a couple of amphibious tanks, now I wish I didn't upgrade them to something else. Well, I guess I'll switch at least one of them back, for just such an occassion. I was thinking that the T34 was amphibious, or at least a great deal of one their variants were (I'm not sure I've tried that though, but I doubt it'll work). So is my technique correct? Do you ram the guy into the water, and he either instantly rafts, or does so at the beginning of the next player turn? I used them once a long time ago as the Germans, and it seems I just rammed them into a water hex.

Charles22, yes your assumption is correct, just walk into the water! You should make sure you have plenty of movement though, be at least 2-3 away, no more, seems like you need to leave at least 1-2 MP to enter the water. Hope you get it to work.

Recall how I had the theory that sides with defensive missions may not be permitted to use rafts? Well it seems true. Third battle of Soviet campaign gave me an offensive river crossing. All the infantry got rafts. One thing that makes me wonder though, I wonder if barge carriers will put forth barges on a defensive mission? For if they don't, even that couldn't have helped me in battle two. I'll tell you what's freaky though. I bombed smoke like crazy to enable that at least some of my units would be able to raft successfully. After going though all the effort to see which infantry units would "raft it", it provided a movement shading in the water for them. I went to the T34 and it wouldn't cross. I then went to my T40s (they're actually listed in the game as amphibious) which then were able to cross the water a couple of hexes. That's the freaky thing, to see those tanks in the midst of all that smoke crossing the water. I don't think I'd use those paper-thin tanks for offensive thrusts across rivers like that (would use them in a safe area to some flank), but it was just a test.
