Thanks Dili!

While I was browsing the bibliography in that article, one item caught my eye ("Shipping in Naval Logistics"). I did a search for it and ran across another site:

www.fold3.com

There are a number of US Navy historical documents on this site--including "Shipping in Naval Logistics".

Warning: To download, you must have a membership, but they have a free (with CC#) 7 day trial membership. If you don't want to be charged, remember to cancel before 7 days are up!

Questions on the flags on your picture:

I can see left from top:
- Manchukuo
- Mengkiang (2 flags: old and new)
- China (2 flags: old's five races under one union and ROC's white sun on blue sky)

right:
- Is it Laos?
- Philippines
- ??? maybe Xingjian or Indonesia?
- Burma
- ??? maybe Korea?

Missing:
- Kampuchea
- Vietnam
- Thailand

The flags are:

On the left:

Manchukuo
Mengkiang
Mongolian League
East Hebei Autonomous Council
Beijing puppet state

On the right:

Thailand
Philippines
Indonesia
Burma
Shanghai puppet state

I didn't include any others to keep things symmetric and to keep it looking too junky. The flag information I got from Flags of the World.

BTW, I like your signature quote very much!

Bill

A good read. Look in the notes and bibliography and you see that most of the information he got on Japanese shipping is from Mark Parillo's work on the Japanese Merchant Marine.

That's the same Mark Parillo that was my older brother's major professor/good friend and his wife's first boss at the Institute for Military History. He's part of the reason they met. Very cool!
