Just got caught up. Did not realize that you were still posting. It must be fun to run amok with the Soviets. I can wait for mine to get release. Viberpol and I are just about to enter 1945. I am doing well but he is a tough opponent. I "have" cut off his DEI oil but am having a hard time getting in range of the homeland with my bombers. Biggest success has been in CBI where I hold Bangkok and am trying to cut the SE Asia landmass in half.

In the PI I am just starting to take some based to build up my air power for the attack. He still have a very strong air force and navy but I am hoping that his lack of oil will soon be felt.

Yup, I'am still alive with this one!

Well.. "running amok with the soviets".. that makes things sound easy!

It actually is not that "easy". At least Dave has substantial forces and high level of forts in the region.

The movement is not that fast either at least not initially. The more you move ahead the harder it will become.

Knowing Viberbol don't expect an victory parade there and if you have lost in China even less so. It is one of those things that will keep your mind on the game late wars though. No doubt you will like running wild with the Russians but word of caution it is definately possible to get bogged down or even lose the momentum completely if you make mistakes.

Also don't expect much from the Russian airforces. They are doing poor job indeed!

If you have cut his oil supply you are doing fine! I would recommend you check out Leyte Gulf region for potential airbasss and do bring the stuff I did not in the first run. You will also never have enough supplies there either.

Thanks for the tips. I thought I had plenty of shipping but am amazed at the oil and supply needed to keep my war machine working. Seems like I am constantly pumping supply into Rangoon and to the South Pacific. Fuel, is another issue. I wish I had captured some more oil and refineries intact.

Holding Singapore is nice. The shipyard there is invaluable. Got my eye on Manila now.

Yeah. You never will have enough supplies and fuel.. no matter what you think.

Oh, Singapore definately is nice to have and congrats of seizing the place.

You might need to take Marianas if you are gunning for Manila though. That ain't easy to do and to be honest don't expect anything from your flak crews nor carrier CAP. It is leaking more than Titanic in his maiden voyage.

Pacific (October 30th 1945)

Japan

Nothing major to report. There has been small scale industry/manpower airstrikes but nothing significant just yet.

We are building / expanding more airfields before the larger scale bombing campaign will start.

Philippines

Japan has launched few large scale bombing and kamikaze strikes in the region. Few allied CVE's, cruisers, destroyers and transports were hit.

In return the japanese side lost anywhere between 500-1000 aircraft conducting these operations.

We are mopping up the bases here and the days at Cagayan are pretty much numbered for the japanese defenders. Once this is done we will move forward...

Russia

Dave launched airstrikes againts the Russian naval forces stationed at Vladivostok. The abysmal performance by the russian airforce resulted the destruction of cruisers and some destroyers.

I have to say that the russian airforce cannot compete againts the japanese fighters nor bombers... here is an example of the "Star Wars" effect on how the game handles air to air combat...

...just an one example what I mean by this. The enemy fighters sweeping high and rest is history.

Thus anyone expecting to have an fighting airforce.. well you will be disappointed.

Well I will return the favour elsewhere with higher sweeps so what comes around goes around.

The aircombat model does leave a lot be desired for... no matter what anyone says. and that is just one example of many combats reported.

There is also one of the most stubborn Border Defense Fortress near Yenki... I have been hitting this place for an month now and it wohn't go away...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at 111,44 (near Yenki)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 15933 troops, 265 guns, 49 vehicles, Assault Value = 592

Defending force 694 troops, 27 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 10

Allied adjusted assault: 340

Japanese adjusted defense: 4

Allied assault odds: 85 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
199 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 17 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 3 (1 destroyed, 2 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
27 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
39th Rifle Division
339th Guards SU Regiment
29th Rifle Brigade
393rd Rifle Brigade

Defending units:
1st Border Defense Fortress

..these defenders "respawn" turn after turn despite being cut off.

Elsewhere the intial ground assault againts Yenki was repulsed. There are high forts and large forces defending that base.

Overall the japanese seem to have large ground forces in central manchuko despite the allied early victories. This place definately wohn't be easy to overrun so do not expect historical advances in this region.

Deve has also continued his advance towards norther Russia via deserts. I have units arriving and this threat is under control. He will be waisting his time and assets with those operations.

CenPac / South Pacific

Few operataions brewing.. more about these later...

Thanks bigred! I will keep this AAR ongoing to the end. I think less than year left in gametime now.Just been a bit more busy RL thus can't update as often and detailed.

As for your question. I use "patrol zone command" option with the subs. Too much work to detail their routes manually for each submarine but I do check that these boats keep out the shallow waters though.

Bombing some cities but keeping the major bomber forces at bay currently since the airfields are not ready yet.

The japanese stubborn resistance continues at Cagayan. Dave has flown extra reinforcements there and those troops are putting up an fight.

That base is key here since it is pretty much the only major base before Luzon. I do hope to have that wrapped up soon though.

I just rolled into 1945 in our game. The best thing is the amazing jump in the quality of Allied replacement pilots-especially Navy pilots. They come in with an average experience of about 50. Makes building up the pilot pool much easier.

Have you dropped any A-bombs?

And would you post a screen shot of you Russian front?

crsutton: The pilots are not an issue as you said. Than again Japanese counterparts seems equal to the task mostly.

Oh, I have dropped all of the A-bombs available. It seems to damage manpower but does not do much other damage. I think the count is now at 5 A-bombs dropped.

As requested the pic from russia below...

Pacific (November 14th 1945)

Japan

Allied aircraft cause minor industrial damage at Toyohara and Matsuyama.

Pretty quiet turn in this region. Just an little air to air show above Catbalogan where allied aces shot down severeal Ki-84a Frank fighters.

Quiet turn... ZzzzZzzzzz!

Burma

Allied forces capture Chanthaburi in Thailand.

Looks like you have Tamsag cut off from most roads to the south. He can't last long now.
Amazing battle in Yenki - I have never seen forts drop to level 7! WTH were they before? 9? 10? Or merely 8?
I thought you might be in trouble when the previous bombardment attack showed he had over 1000 guns, but then you brought twice as much.
Now if your engineers can just last long enough to grind down those forts ...

Do your marching forces have enough AAA to keep his bombers off their backs?

Thanks for the comments. Yeah. Tamsag will be seized back next turn and that is not his "main" thrust towards north.

His main forces are actually moving up past Linshi and some elements are closing in Ulan Udde region.

I have infantry waiting for him and his supplies lines are very long so really cannot see this being anything other than annoyance.

That was the first assault on Yenki.. so safe bet would be more than level 7!

Actually ordered another immediate assault there next turn since the troops are ready for it. Also I need to bring those AV numbers down.. this battle here will be battle of an attrition and I think we can handle it out somewhat easily.

I know he can send in extra reinforcements from either Kirin or Harbin.. well Harbin unlikely since he needs his units there.

I really need to get better intel about Mukden and Changchun... not detailed enough but sizeable garrisons reported.

Despite soviet airforce flying paper aircraft I haven't been bombed extensively here. He is busy battling it out near Luzon mainly.

As for AAA units.. yeah, have more than enough few miles out of Yenki and some of those units moving into the city itself.

Pacific (November 24th 1945)

Japan

I have been bombing few cities Toyohara, Wakkanai, Matsuyama and Nagoya.

The bigger aircampaign againts the home islands is scheduled to start in december 1945 or january 1946.

Japanese E boats keep hammering the US submarines patrolling the deep waters around the home islands.

I really cannot describe how absurd the ASW actually is in the game... it is beyond an joke though.

Philippines

We have been grinding againts some stubborn japanese soldiers defending Cagayan...

...and hopefully this will be wrapped up soon.

There has been minor ground battles happening at Talaud Island and few other smaller bases.

No large scale air to air battles to report in this region. Japanese main power has moved into Russian frontlines at least for now.

China

Quiet times still.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Burma

I had some units ordered to move into Battambang. Instead of entering the city all of the units reset their movement into 0.

New orders have been given and hopefully this time around we actually arrive there.

I have been experiencing some of the same issues in my other PBEM (early novermber 1945) as well.. those problems have been with russian forces.

At least the allied spearhead arrived Chumphon...

...needless to say more troops are enroute here and we should overrun the base soon.

Russia

Japanese have moved large amount of fighters and bombers into this frontline. I can't blame him since the Russian are having hard times in the air.

The current main targets for japanese bombers have been Voroshilov, Vladivostok, Harbin and few other bases. Some combat reports from Vladivostok region below...

The japanese also continue their operations in nothern russia.

I have fresh units arriving there within next couple of days so it will take a lot to achieve anything.

We shall see what Dave has in mind there... don't mind him moving units upwards though.

Here is the "score" from previous turn....

We have continued with the moderate city bombing runs... not ready for the full scale assault yet.

However we have dropped an A-bomb into Tokyo and another is scheduled for Yokohama.

Nothing major to report. A few air to air battles have occured.

We will soon have 4 level 9 airfields in this region. That will be what we have been aiming for... pleased to achieve this.

...safe to say that there wohn't be any "Marianas Turkey shoots" on the menu for allied player here.

Oh well, we will capture the island chain and don't mind if he wants to make an stand there. I have B29's hitting airfields in the region and plenty of firepower available.

Pacific (January 1st 1946)

Japan

We should be able to start large scale bombing runs in late january or february.

In the meantime we keep the moderate campaign ongoing...

Philippines

No major naval nor air battles to report.

I have kept sweeping Manila and few other bases in this region but Dave has not committed his fighters / bombers.

On the ground the siege of Cagayan should soon be over which is good news.

China

ZzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz........

Burma

Victoria Point is now liberated. Very happy to get this sorted out since it has large airfield and decent port facilities.

Allied troops are now fighting at Surat Thani in northern Malaya peninsula.

Overall the forces are making steady progress...

CenPac / South Pacific

The operations at Marianas continue. Now that the allied have seized Guam the focus has shifted towards Saipan.

We have landed the initial troops and the battle will commence next turn...

..we shall see how many days / weeks these stubborn Japanese can hold their lines.

The japanese airforce has made few runs againts our shipping conducting these operations but have not hit any major vessels in the area.

No sign off any Japanese naval assets either... it seems Dave has them parked somewhere around the home islands.

Russia

The intel indicates that Japanese are moving fresh troops towards Yenki. Currently 69 enemy units present.

I have ordered bombardment assault next turn to evaluate the situation there.

Japanese have also launched major airstrikes towards Vladivostok port/airfield. There has been hundreds of bombers in action and japanese are slowly gaining upper hand here.

We will make this costly as possible though...

Now time to clear out the rest of the enemy forces in Mindanado...

The allied reinforcements have now arrived into Surat Thani and assault is ordered. I don't expect this base to hold on for long.

Allied forces have also moved further south into Thailand. We should arrive into Kompong Chhnang within next couple of days...

...as you can see Dave is flying in some extra infantry units and to be honest I don't mind that at all.

Allied will arrive at Tinian also shortly so I'am expecting to have all of three bases occupied by end of january 1946.

The landings at Tinian will commence within next few days.

Russia

Nothing major to report. Dave have actually done very good job here since I need to rest some of my russian troops.

Japan

The first waves of B29's have been hitting japanese industrial targets. These bomber squadrons are flying out of Marianas.

There has been additional A-bomb dropped into Tokyo. The capital is reportedly severely damaged.

Philippines

This theatre of operations has been losing some steam lately.

The allied side have now secured Mindanado and there are no significant Japanese forces reported outside of Luzon.

At the moment things remain calm...

China

ZzzzzzzzzzzzZzzzzzzzzz... simply not enough supplies to do large scale offensives. Dave seems to have moved a lot of troops into Manchuko area.

Burma

The allied forces have made significant progress here.

Thailand is now 90% liberated with british troops holding Saigon.

The advance towards Singapore is temporarily halted Nakhon Si Thammarat. This will be temporary and additional troops are enroute towards the area.

Overall we are making good progress here.

CenPac / South Pacific

The main Marianas islands are now seized and fully operational. (Saipan, Tinian and Guam)

Ground battles rage at Rota and there few operational enemy bases further up the island chain.

The B29's have already made their first visits from this area.

Russia

The additional Japanese reinforcements from Chinese theatre have halted the Russian bear.

Actually both sides have lost some steam and only minor ground battles are raging in deserts.

We shall see whether we are able to make progress here. It wohn't definately be easy.

Pacific (April 11th 1946)

Japan

Allied forces have dropped A-bombs into Tokyo and Osaka.

The B29 squadrons are at full swing but are taking casualties due not having fighter escorts.

Overall the Japanese homeland are taking a beating...

Russia

I have tried to push through the japanese perimeter at Yenki and Harbin.

Unfortunately the japanese have held their line and repulsed the efforts.

Dave made an good move by moving divisions in northern russia and thus hampering the supply routes.

Also japanese airforce have been too much for the russians to handle...

Philippines

There has not been much action here. Occasional large scale air to air combats at Leyte Gulf and over Manila.

I have 4-5 solid airfields in this region so life for the japanese is not easy.

The last operation in this theatre is on it's way and it is called "battleaxe".

Lets see how that one goes...

China

I really haven't been able to launch the major offensive here as I wanted.

Simply because there are not enough supplies to sustain such a big push forward and japanese forces are well fortified.

On the same note I doubt Dave have the supplies or forces to do anything major in last weeks either.

Burma

Allied forces continue their push into Malaya peninsula and have now reached and liberated Singora.

The goal to liberate Singapore is not going to happen with the closing towards an end.

Japanese repulsed allied forces out of Cam Rahn Bay by unloading additional forces there.

Bulk of Thailand is on allied hads though...

CenPac / South Pacific / Aleutians

Not much happening in either of these places.

Mostly supply convoys moving supplies and fuel forward to feed the allied armies in the frontlines.

No active operations scheduled here for last couple of weeks.

Very cool! But I always thought the game went through March '46 only?? How long does it let you continue?

Wasn't it August 1946?

Seems to be scenario-specific. E.g. Scen 1 has 1634 day-turns.

I don't know, but obviously my prior impression was wrong.

I believe they are playing Scenario 14 Downfall, which goes to Sept. 1, 1946. NOT

Edit: Correction, I looked at page 1 and they are playing Scenario 1 GC. Got them mixed up with another AAR doing Downfall that has been absent for some time now. Might have been AcePylut?

Hi guys!

I think this game will finish in "3 weeks time"... meaning that june 1st is the THE END day!

Just enough time to land at Luzon and establish frontline there. Hopefully Dave will move his naval assets forward so we shall see one big "BOOM" before the end.

This is scenario 1 PBEM game so no mods or anything else in that matter.

Sardaukar: Thanks! It has been a long journey and pretty pleased that this will be my 2nd PBEM to actually finish in AE.

How is life at Malta?

Pacific (May 25th 1946)

Japan

Allied B29 bombers have hit several cities around the japanese mainland. (Kobe, Gifu, Tokyo etc)

Despite the stubborn resistance and heavy losses we are taking the economy out piece by piece.

Russia

The russian troops are still trying to push through at Yenki.

Elsewhere the frontlines are on stalemate status...

Philippines

Allied 4E bombers have shutdown the airfield at Manila.

The last big naval invasion has occured when troops landed at Legaspi.

We now have firm foothold in Luzon and are moving ahead towards Naga.

Oddly the japanese did not commit naval assets here to defend the main island.

There just some motorboats and couple of destroyers.

No sign of KB either.. it has not been seen in months. Whether they are out fuel of just hiding is anyones guess...

China

ZzzzzzzzzZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

Burma

Japanese BB TF visited Singora and bombarded the town. This TF was lead by BB Yamamoto.

Also there seems to be some sort of an japanese counterstrike brewing south of Singora.

That suits me just fine since my mainforce is just entering Malaya peninsula and are itching for an fight.

CenPac / South Pacific / Aleutians

ZZzzzzzzzzzzzzZZzzzZZZZZZZZZzzz...

The end date has arrived in this PBEM!

Nothing really to report from the final days. We did push with city bombings, seized Naga and were looking for one final CV duel.

Unfortunately I went towards Iwo Jima / Okinawa when the carriers were near Brunei.

It actually feels good to have completed two PBEM games with this AE monster.

First off thanks again to Dave. This is not the first encounter we did finish off. It takes a lot from your PBEM partner to stick around until the end!

Also it does require somewhat similar personalities to talk some things through when the issues arise. As said hats off to him an true gentleman!

I will be open for an rematch if Dave wants to go around the 2nd time...

Really big thanks to all the readers. My apologies that I did not have the time to update the AAR as much as I would in later years but I did receive a lot of soid tips.

Thus thank you all....

How do I feel the game went...

The submarine warfare is way off. I don't know whether they have made adjustments in later patches to it but really they should since ASW is brutal.

China is an mess.. truly is but thankfully did not lose the whole country despite starting on early.

You always need luck with dice rolls and I feel a bit unlucky with CV encounters we had in this game.

I did manage to push further into Malaya / Thailand than in our previous encounters. Also managed to gain solid foothold in CenPac.

I could have bombed the oilfields in this at DEI but chose not to do so. That was 50/50 call an might to otherwise in rematch.

I did not land at japanese home islands. (Last time around I did manage to capture couple of cities).. so that did not deliver.

The bombing campaign was taking its toll and doubt japanese economy could have hold out much longer before completely crumbling into dust.

I did not play as well with the Soviets as I would have liked to. Lessons learned here... but I did put up an fight as did my opponent.

Overall though I would grade my game vs Dave with 8- number.

Most importantly though this was an journey with it's up and downs. I do not play for points.. never have and never will.. the journey is the most important factor.

I do hope the people following the encouter enjoyed the ride... now I will post few screenshots from last day of the war.

As said thank you Dave.. and I'am definately up for an REMATCH if you want to go another round...!

You sir are one tough oppponent to crack!
