Hello, I'm planning to create a little different kind of campaign, based on the Finnish battalion ErP-18's fight against the Russians in 1944 on the Aunus front. I want to make this campaign a little more "historically correct" and realistic, and have an idea of how to do this but it demands a little more of the player. I'm curious about how such a concept would be received, so please.. comment on it. My ideas for the campaign: 1. I'm going to pass on a save file from the first scenario together with the campaign files, where all the forces are hand-picked and edited to get the correct names and composition of the battalion (of course, this doesn't prevent the player from not loading the save file, and just go on playing it as a normal campaign!). 2. The campaign is going to be balanced for this core force, and use of it.. so it might not be as challenging for one that picks and choose all by himself. 3. Now to a big one. In many of the battles the battalion was involved in, not the whole batallion was employed. It goes all the way from half-company/company sized battles up to regimental sized battles (like my first scenario about ErP 18 at Suurimaki for those who saw it). Here, i'm planning to ask the players in the introduction text to the scenario in question to deploy only the units that were actually involved in the battle and leave the other ones outside. The battles will be balanced for a smaller force. The alternative to this would be to make a campaign just including the larger battles, or maybe even rewrite history a bit and expand the smaller encounters to battalion sized. 4. The replacement/repair points will be kept very low/non-existant to reflect the real situation, with a more and more depleted battalion withdrawing all the way to the original Finnish border under heavy fighting. Perhaps this will be a problem in SPWAW, since battles here seem to have many more casualties than for real.. so I might give out some replacements. Grateful for comments about this. I like the idea very much. I have just one question : Do you plan to concieve mostly defensive scenarios, as it must have been historically ? I fear, if that is the case, that the interest in the campaign could suffer of it, because I find offensive scenarios more interesting than defensive one, at least against AI. I prefer something perhaps a bit less historical, but more dynamic on a ludic point. But that is just an opinion, of course. I think there are many players that prefer to stick as close as possible to historical facts.

Think it is a great ide.But wouldent it be a lot of small battles? But the ide about having a saved file is great. Then you would have a real battalion and keep the replacment small so you would have to household with the troops.

Thanks for the comments, The scenarios will be a mix of defending, delaying and advance scenarios. Not only pure defence. Some of the defensive type scenarios are also going to be to delay a superiour enemy as long as possible, with points-per-turn victory hexes, and an exit retreat hex. Setting up a too stiff defence will also lead to higher losses, and thus a big problem in the next battles to come.. The history of the battalion also includes a number of counterattacks against the Russians. The number of small battles is what you make it. I want to include the most important and interesting ones.. and whenever possible, of course, the whole battalion will be used.

Dear mate , I think your idea is great and I am trying to introduce the concept of a more flexible campaign editor to Matrix that your effort are showing... I am glad you are trying to delineate a campaign different from standards as I suffered such kind of problem.. there are many ideas to suggest about a more flexible editor Think for istance at core units divided into groups of different battle deployment (with green or elite in your own core units) ,or think to more than one parallel storyboard included in the same campaign to represents a selection to the player .. this would model for instance different battlefronts Actually I have or to put in sequence different subcampaing into one (Abyssinia and North Africa for my italian campaign ) while they were in a sort of parallelism and what's more with different core units.. But you can also design two different employments for your core battalion in two different scenarios subunits of your core forces if only the editor storyboard could accept a switch input from the player after a battle result.. that is for you to join to me in asking more facilities for the next SPWAW5.0 As regards your idea I think I would play that even if I did not understand some issues : are you going to give a core force choosen by you ? is this possible using a saved file ? and how this will manage with improving the core force after a battle ? (possibility of choosing a pre-build core force and eventually change it during a long campaign would be GREAT as more complete and precise subcampaign could be joined togheter ) As regards low build points I agree and I will be poor in points as this represents logistic typical italian difficulties..this will force player to well-employ its troops.. and also playing a new battle with units damaged could be challenging...obviously you have to balance enemy forces to let the player a possibility of surviving.. Good work !
