30th -
quote:

Morning Air attack on Ramree Island , at 54,48

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid detected at 13 NM, estimated altitude 32,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 3 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44-IIa Tojo x 29

Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb Trop x 8
Hurricane IIc Trop x 40
P-38H Lightning x 31
P-40N1 Warhawk x 45
F4U-1 Corsair x 6

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-44-IIa Tojo: 4 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Hurricane IIc Trop: 2 destroyed
P-40N1 Warhawk: 1 destroyed

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x Ki-44-IIa Tojo sweeping at 30000 feet

I still have over 150 of the Hurricane IIc in my pools with the Spitfire VIII coming out in 11/43.

3 of 28 Tojo are lost in another sweep vs just one Hurricane.
12 Tojo, 61 Oscars, and 29 Helens still find a CAP of 103 fighters. I lose just one P-40 vs 22 planes.
7 of 16 Helens are shot down as they come in without escort.
31st -
42 Tojo find only 35 Hurricanes and 8 P-40s on CAP. We each lose 2 planes. I have had to pull out highly damaged groups by LST and xAKs back to Akyab or bases further north to recover. My fighters at Akyab that were on LRCAP also were resting. A calculated risk.

China:
Sining (2 NW of Lanchow) - 12 Oscars escort up to 35 Sally daily.

Sian - 9 Sonia hit AF. 10 H81s shoot down 2 on 31st.

Australia:
Horn Island -
30th - Two groups of P-38s sweep.

Esperance -
30th -
1 of 10 PT sunk vs 3 CA, 4 DD
3 E vs 10 PT = just shell hits
10 PT vs 8 PB = 6 PT & 1 PB sunk

Notes:
Learning curve - As in real life, the best teacher is not our successes, but our failures. Rather than pull out my planes from Esperance after the 30th, I send the PV-1 and Mitchell bombers that are undamaged to Port Augusta and Adelaide. I send in some SBDs and Avengers and restrict everybody, including my fighters to one hex hoping to hit his transports. Wrong move !!

Air losses on 31st = 275 Allied vs 65 Japan.

Allied Intel Reports - Ignore them daily at your peril. I have!?!

Who said the Japanese BB TF cannot close down your base?? Not me!! The troops at Esperance will die soon.

This was a quick and painful lesson for me. I spend almost 1000 PP on buying back some of the 24 LCU (all that I can) and the air groups in the order phase later. Morale at Allied HQ hits an all time low and brief thoughts of surrender are expressed in a short email to Nick, but within an hour or two, I rally enough to continue the fight. The Allied fleet is mostly intact to help raise morale.

Kalgoorlie -
The troops here and the next two hexes to west are attacked by 48 Kates, 23 Judy. My AA does well to keep them at bay, but the disruption levels on the divisions steadily grows. Nick launches daily ground bombardment attacks. The two stacks to west are ordered to march SE and go about 5 miles per day.

2nd Marine Div stack is 4 NW of Esperance. They are 'trying' to head east to relative safety. 9 Kates attack them on 1st. 5 of 28 Nells are shot down by AA on 2nd. They tried to target the big NZ AA Bde. 2 of 9 Judy are lost trying to do the same.

New Guinea:

South Pacific & Solomons:
Tulagi -

Engineering: Ramree F1 & 2;

Notes:
Air losses for 1st are bad. I lose 259 vs 74 for Japan. I had flown out those airframes that were undamaged and sent almost all the pilots from the stranded airgroups into the "Reserve" pools. Three highly skilled Corsair, two P-47, and three P-40Ks groups lose almost all their airframes. This hurts the most as any Allied player known. In two days, I lose over 500 planes. Most are from Esperance. Attempting to reinforce the lone AF vs withdrawing everybody before the 7 BBs hit the base was a bone headed move on my part. That is in language I can use here.

The 2nd Marine Div and troops stacked 4 hexes to NW of Esperance. I have already come to accept that they will probably not make to it to safety as Japan has 7 divisions at Esperance to block the way.

What is the force disposition in this corner of Oz and what are you of risk of losing. That stack in the Wilderness, ie 35K troops + 500 guns is a goner I agree. What do you have at Kalgoorlie ? The situation is very bleak too for those and what is the stack just north of esperance, can expect to pin it down and surround it too (quite likely with2 tank divisions..) All in all what are you about too lose ? 120k ? more ? how many divs ?

Wow.

Tough being on the end of this disaster, but try to focus on the journey and stress less about the final outcome.

Veji1 - look at the posting for Kalgoorlie on the 31st and it will show those troops at the base and the two hexes to the west of it. I'm thinking the stack with the Americal Div may also be lost. Those troops are moving at 5 miles per day and I should know whats up in about 2 weeks.

Carrier Capable Corsairs - I get these nasty planes very soon. How do AFB deploy them on their CV/CVL/CVEs??

Initially I used them on the CVLs as the groups are smaller and easier to upgrade. Lately I have them on the CVs as well. But only on groups doing CAP work. Don´t have the luxury of wasting Corsairs on Escort...yet!

But to be fair Hellcats can probably do the job almost as well as it will mostly be vs. Zeroes. I have a hunch using Corsairs foremost (when they are scarce) in LBA groups might be most beneficial as your CVs won´t be seeing combat very often. But you will certainly use your LBA. I use two of the 28 plane replenishment groups with Corsairs as Sweepers to great effect.

No doubt losses like that hurt, but I think he has made a strategic mistake bringing so many IDs to Australia at this stage in the war. The Allies are getting lots of reinforcements and if you keep the move up the Solomons and Northern NG coast, the Australian invasion will have to withdraw.

All you need in Oz is enough to hold him out of southern areas. Maybe this time he will cross the Line of Death for real! Your bombers should have an advantage bombing him in clear terrain.

Sept 3, 4 .
It 'appears' that Japan is pulling out of the northern Irrawaddy River bases - Mandalay, Magwe, and Meiktila.

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft; If odds are underlined, they are the Allies; BG = Bomber Group of 48 planes (4 x 12 bomber squadrons); FG fighter group = 25 fighter planes if American

Subs:

CVs:
Mine are at Funafuti (Ellice Islands).

India/Burma:
Ramree Island - Port will be at 3 in the next one or two days.
One hex east -
base - Nothing for both days which allows damaged fighters to recover.

4 hexes SSE of Lashio has a Chinese Corp in it. 14 Oscars with 18 Helens hit it daily.

Magwe -
3rd - The stack to west is hit. Only 3(1) Tojo on LRCAP vs my 10 P-38 on LRCAP and 16 Blenheim. My second wave sees a larger leaky CAP of 3 Nick and 19 Tojo vs 20 P-38s, 12 B-25, 16 Blenheim. I lose 4 to 2, but the infantry gets hit. The leaky CAP builds up by the third wave as 4 Nick and 31 Tojo face 10 P-38s, 48 B-24s, 24 Lib IIs. I get 2 for 1 of my fighters. I lose 4 of 50 P-40N5s as escort with 24 B-24s vs his still strong CAP of 8 Nick and 35(1) Tojos. Another 21 B-25s with 25 P-40s vs 25 Tojo and 6 Nick. no planes are shoot down. 12 P-38s are still on LRCAP with 12 B-24s get 4:1 in kills vs 16 Tojo. The trickle of bombers continue as 30 B-25s get through without losses. Final group of 12 B-24s. I don't get more than one large bomber group, but that seems to be the norm now.
4th - 64 B-25s, 16 Blenheim, 16 Lib, 12 B-24s go after the troops to SW of base while 9 B-25s, 30 Blenheim, 12 Lib, 71 B-24, 16 Wellington hit the troops to the west. No enemy fighters encountered.

China:
Sian -
4th - 3 of 27 sweeping Oscars are shoot down vs 1 of 17 H81s. A battle of '41/42 airframes.

Kukong -
This base is back on the target list as of the 4th as 26 Helens hit the AF.

Kungchang -
Another base without supplies is hit on 4th by 12 Oscars and 39 Sally.

Australia:
Horn Island -
4th -
CL, 3 DD vs 11 PT = nothing
3 groups of P-38s sweep empty skies.

Esperance -
39 Nells hit the troops to NE on 4th.

Kalgoorlie -
The troops here and the next two hexes to west are attacked.
3rd - Two hexes to west sees 16 Zeros escort in 40(3) Kates, 7(1) Kates, 14(1) Kates, and 4 Judy. 142(2) Helens go after the 1st Marine Div just one hex to west. 7 Nell hit troop at base. Both stacks to west are ground bombarded.
4th - 3 of 137 Helens are downed by flak as they go after both divisions 1 hex west. Only 5 Nells hit troops at base.

2nd Marine Div stack is 4 NW of Esperance -
Left alone on 3rd, but not on 4th as 30 Zeros escort in 19 Nell, and 32 Kates. I get 4 Kates and then 2 of 9 Judy.

New Guinea:

South Pacific & Solomons:
Tulagi -

Engineering: Ndeni AF3; Vanua Lava P1 & AF4; Shemya F3

Notes:
Recon shows the three bases in northern Burma are now empty while the LCU count at both Prome and Toungoo both go up quickly. I need to win in the hex due east of Ramree to allow the almost 60,000 in supplies to flow out.

In Burma, I need to get the supplies to flow out of Ramree. Then, to get a base with over 20k to allow some upgrades and some replacement of devices. Meanwhile, I will focus on Prome as I have four Indian divisions plus both types of HQ near or 100% prepped. I don't have much prepped for Toungoo and that is a jungle hex.

Invasions - Efate TFs are 4 days out. Kirakira TFs have just left Vava'u and are about a week away. Both Koumac and Rennell Island will follow this month.

CVL Cowpen arrives at Panama

Screenshot shows Nick has moved two units out of Kalgoorlie. I now order almost half of those at base to SE to ensure I'm not cut off.

B-24s use Buna's AF for target practice.

Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft; If odds are underlined, they are the Allies; BG = Bomber Group of 48 planes (4 x 12 bomber squadrons); FG fighter group = 25 fighter planes if American

Subs:

CVs:
Mine are at Funafuti (Ellice Islands), but are ordered to head west to support upcoming invasion of Kirakira.

India/Burma:
4 hexes SSE of Lashio has a Chinese Corp in it. Up to 23 Sally attack.

Ramree Island -
One hex east - On 7th...
quote:

Ground combat at 55,48 (near Ramree Island)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 3398 troops, 18 guns, 374 vehicles, Assault Value = 507

Defending force 3445 troops, 17 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 103

Allied adjusted assault: 73

Japanese adjusted defense: 97

Allied assault odds: 1 to 2

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), fatigue(-), morale(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
384 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 24 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

Allied ground losses:
99 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 7 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Assaulting units:
44th Indian Brigade
50th Indian Para Brigade
3rd Carabiniers Regiment
50th Tank Brigade
9th Australian/A Division

Defending units:
7th Burma Militia Regiment
3rd RTA/B Division

That was a very poor adjusted AV. I have help on the way so I'll rest until the 9th. I did order a shock attack for 9th.

Prome - recon flights show 8 LCUs [34780/297/39]

Toungoo - recon flights show 16 LCUs [52400/441/681]

Rangoon - recon flights show 22 LCUs [27840/235/181] - 243 fighters & 98 bombers

Mandalay - The empty base becomes Allies on 7th. Chinese Corp on way to an empty Meitkila.

China:
Kukong - Up to 20 Helens hit base daily.

Kienko -
7th & 8th - 13 Sally hit AF. It seems that I will now see roving bombing attacks in the northern part of the country.

Australia:
Horn Island -
7th - 61 B-25s hit AF. I have less than full numbers attacking here as some are at Coen upgrading to the D1 model due to others at Townsville switching over to the newly arriving A-20s.
8th - Only 18 Hellcats show up all day.

Esperance -
7th - Retreating Aussie Bde is attacked and push down trail to east.
8th - The whole 1st Tank Div attacks and eliminates the Aussie Bde. Only a TD Battalion is left from Esperance now.

Kalgoorlie -
7th - One hex due west sees 123(1) Helens followed by ground bb attack. The stack two hexes due west and the base itself sees just a ground bb attack.
8th - similar to 7th.

2nd Marine Div stack is 3 NW of Esperance -
7th - 13(2) Kate and 19(3) Nell attack stack
8th - 10(2) Kate and 20(2) Nell attack. See a pattern here??

New Guinea:
Buna -
8th - The fully operational "Death Star" flexes its muscles here...B-24s
93 B-24s & 12 B-17s hit the AF that has NO CAP!! This is followed by smaller waves (9) with another 85 B-24s. 74 planes are destroyed on ground and the AF is almost closed down. 76 P-38s sweep AFTER the bombers crater the AF.

South Pacific & Solomons:
Efate - Invasion TFs will arrive on 9th

Kiraira - Invasion TFs are 26 hexes away.

Engineering: Hilo AF6; Ndeni AF4 & P2; Vanikoro AF4 & P1; Hobart AF8; Corvallis F6

Notes:
B-24s - The "J" model just came into full production at 65 per month until the end of the war. I know Nick and other JFBs hate these planes.

Burma - It seems that I will have my next major barrier to cross from Prome to Toungoo. The troops around Taung Gyi seem to be retreating. I will follow as best I can while hoping to rotate troops in Burma to a base that gets supplies from Ramree to upgrade devices and rest them.

Western Australia - Looks like I've lost the hexside control on a few key bases in the greater Kalgoorlie area.

So how has this all changed your strategic planning for the mid-war? Where will you hit in the Pacific? Will you aim for anything in the DEI?

The rest of '43 will be moving up the Solomons. Then, isolate Truk and I'm thinking that I may need to follow the northern coast of New Guinea to the Philippines.

CV Lexington - 86 days at PH? Is there a chance that the repair yard there is overtasked and that is slowing down some of the repairs? I would put CVE Nassau on low priority and see if that helps Lex's repair time. Depends how bad you need the other ships in PH yards, but Lex could also go high priority or emergency repair, unless some of that time is because of upgrades that cannot be advanced.

China:
Kukong - Up to 20 Helens hit base daily.

Kienko -
11th - My LRCAP of 18 P-66 and 4 P-43 down 6 of 9 Sallys. No more attacks afterwards.

CL, 3 DDs vs 12 PT = 0 hits. 75 B-25s hit the AF.

Kalgoorlie -
11th -
My three tank units trying to escape from base (1 SE) are attacked by 14 Kates, 27 Nell, 26 Val, 126 Helens. My attack afterwards only get 18:16 odds. The 2nd Marines are 3 NW of Esperance, but the big AA Bde keeps the 8(2) Kates and 48(3) Nells at bay.
12th -
The tanks are attacked again by 29 Val, 21 Kates, 9 Nells, 110 Helens. My shock attack goes wrong.

New Guinea:

South Pacific & Solomons:
Efate - Empty base becomes Allies on 11th.

Kiraira - Invasion TFs will unload in 1 day.

Tulagi -
12th - The sweeps begin from Ndeni to try to gain air superiority before the invasion of Kirakira on the 13th. 16(1) P-38s find 48(5) Zero and 42(1) Tojo on CAP. The next few waves do well. Two separate groups of 18 P-47s shoot down 9 more for no losses. 18 P-38s get 1:1 in losses.

Rabaul -
12th - There is NO CAP as multiple waves of B-24s from Cooktown hit the AF. 170 planes are involved and I destroy over 30 on the ground and do moderate damage to the AF.

Engineering: Normanton F6; Mornington AF6; Ramree AF6 & F3; Ndeni AF5;

Notes:
Western Australia - After a brief period of depression, I'm now accepting that no more LCUs will escape form this disaster. Doing my own grief therapy at home.

Rabaul - Nick has done it again and left base within B-24 range without any CAP. I hope he keeps this up. The air groups will need almost a week to recover.

Air losses for 12th were 33 Allies vs 88 Japan.

Burma - My LCUs now ALL have supplies!!

Nicely done!

This is the time in game where I too experienced a shift in surface combat, and IJN ships could no longer match up equally with the USN. It's a hard lesson to learn for an aggressive IJ player, so you might keep pushing here and see if he continues to take the bait.

While I haven't sunk anything bigger than a CA, but his DD losses are starting to mount. I have sunk 44 DDs now and that is about 25% of his total of around 160 at this point in the game.

I have transport loading up at Vava'u for the next invasion in the Solomons. Meanwhile, transports are already headed for Luganville that will then turn south for Koumac invasion. The rest of the SoPac is a minor priority to get cleared, but most of those troops have been prepped for a while now, so I'll clear that area and give me more bases for troops.

While many players avoid playing Japan due to the economy. IMO, running the Operations Dept for the Allies when you have stacking limits is also a big challenge.

I'll add my kudos for wiping out that IJN cruiser TF. Don't see that very often!
I think you are right that the number of SCTFs and the full speed decided the outcome.
I am sure he was not expecting you to send so many ships at full speed, or he would have had better defences.

Sad that the troops in Oz could not stand up to the IJA tanks. Were the allied tanks still the Marmon-Harringtons and Humbers? Those things are little more than armoured cars and cannot stand up to a true tank.

Once you get some Stuarts, Grants, Lees, Shermans and Matildas the situation will be reversed.

My tanks were Grants. However, I didn't have any AA so he was able to disable most from the air and I was near or out of supply. The whole Western Australia campaign has been a major lesson. He now has about 10 or so divisions in that area. So......

Is it your feeling that he will use the 10 divisions in SW Australia to continue the offensive in Australia? Or is he going to be evacuating them? This could be your chance to force a carrier battle.

Feedback needed!!

OK, my troops in western Australia will not escape due to hexside control issues. Only the stack with 2nd Marine that is NW of Esperance 'may' have a chance. The other three stacks around Kalgoorlie will NOT. Right now those three stacks are attacked by his bombers and then daily ground bombardment attacks. No deliberate attacks yet. The ground war has not been bloody to date and except for the Aussie, my pools are in good shape. Do I just let them continue to tie down his troops there or do I attack to kill mine by shock attacks so I can rebuild them??

If it were me, I'd probably shock attack with my tanks to get them rebuilt asap (just because they are so useful on offensive). As for the troops, well, I think you are probably the only one in a position to know which is the smarter call. Is there some way you can really take advantage of tying those 10 divisions down if you delay them? If so, that is probably worthwhile. If not, well, the name of the game as Japan is buying time, so delaying him does you no good if it ultimately delays you.

What do you think he will do with his 10 divisions when they wipe out this resistance?
Continue to try to conquer all of Oz? You need to buy time to get your defences in shape so delay him.
Withdraw to fight in NG or the Solomons? Again, delay him so you can advance first.
Withdraw and send them to fight in Burma, China or garrison DEI? This would probably be advantageous to you and you want him to get on with it, so do the "banzai charge".
I assume your equipment/device pools are pretty good and you have some PP to buy back key units?
