These are the CVE's that come in with no planes what so ever.

Do you attach groups from the CV's that have gone under? Does it seem to work well?

I am starting SCN 13 and this is my first experince with them, besides the Long Island - which just trucks on back to Pearl as soon as she can.

Thanx for any info.

The actual purpose of the Long Island and several other similiar carriers are as "Transport Carriers". You cannot launch missions from their descks. You can however load fighters, dive bombers and torpedo planes onto them at one airbase/seaport, transport them to another airbase/seaport and unload them.

Most players do send them back to Pearl in the hopes of receiving something more valuable in return.

Thanx for the quick reply - I had no idea you couldn't launch any offensive or defensive strikes off of them.

Is this both types of CVE's then - for the US I have some with planes attached already - are these just for transport as well?

I guess one use would be to refill - the CV strike forces planes, while it it still operating at sea- kind of like replenishment gives the fuel, right? Can this be done?

Use this rule of thumb:

If the CVE arrives from Pearl Harbor/Japan without aircraft, then either send it back or keep it to use for transporting short ranged aircraft.

Navy and Marine aircraft can be received aboard a transport CVE while she is at sea. All aircraft loaded onto a transport CVE can be launched while at sea to move to a base (or Navy aircraft to another Carrier).

Long Island, with her capacity of 16 planes, isn't worth a fart in a typhoon, so I send her packing back to Pearl...

I still can't help feeling this is a bit unrealistic. You are given command of a CVE. It sails from Pearl for xx days...

It arrives ready to do it's part...

You send it back the next day.

This ain't Walmart where if you don't like it you take it back ands omething tells me that this would not happen quite this way.

Hell, if I was sending you scarce naval units in 1942 and you kept sending them back I would sack your arse. :D

And I'd stand toe to toe with you and tell you that I'd take a fleet of pig boats over a Tanker with a cardboard cutout ontop but no airgroup! So send me packing to shovel snow with polar bears in the Aleutians, because I'll fight this war with horseshoes and handgrenades before I change my mind about this!!! Sir!

Lol, thanks! I had a good chuckle writing it.

I have to be careful though, that aggressive attitude has more than once snatched defeat from the jaws of victory...

'Jesus Christ and General Jackson! This is the hottest potato they ever handed me!'

This is the comment made by V.Adm William Halsey when he heard that he was given command over the entire South Pacific in october 42.

I think the good admiral could implement his politics just like he wanted to....as long as he delivered the goods!

So go ahead and do what it takes - as long as you win!

With long island, or any "toothless" CVE there are three viable options.
1st) Load a Marine SBD or A marine/Navy TBF group on it and use it as a ASW platform for slow transport/invasion convoys.
2nd) Load a Marine F4F group on it and use it as a CAP platform for slow transport/invasion convoys
3rd) Load up to double it's capacity of Fighters and SBD's, and assign to a slow invasion convoy, along with a transport carrying a Base Force; Then as soon as you have captured an Airfield, you can then fly the aircraft in from the CVE at a very low cost in readyness and pilot fatigue.
Note No.3 was what the CVE Long island actually did during the Gudalcanal invasion in August 1942.

Wait, is that how you spell "potato"? As I too am a Hoosier, I am partial to Dan Quayle's spelling...."potatoe"

Ah, Mandrake - the mind, it's a wonderful thing to waste...

I wonder has anyone tried using the CVE to rotate CV airgroups?
I prefer using them for ASW patrols thus training the airgroups. I have considered using one to train a night TBF squadron. Should prove interesting.:D

I needed Long Island to ferry some of the Army and Marine SBDs back and forth, along with an extra fighter group. But my lastest check of my Squadron reinforcements shows pretty much everything showing up, on the side of the theater that I want it to show up, so she's going back to Pearl for a couple of months. I'm sending her back with a cripple TF, and I know North Carolina is just sitting in Pearl, so I'm kinda hoping for a trade-up...

Refit them into a floating casino and officer's club! That or just send them back to Pearl (of course the ingrates just keep sending them back).

I operated some orphaned Zeros off of CVE Unryu I think. That was until Mogami figured out that I had forgotten about her being docked at Gili Gili and pummelled her with CA's...

I've had good luck using Long Island in transporting squadrons to forward bases, protecting convoys that run from Noumea to PM, and even using her as 'bait' -- sending her ahead of my main carriers and invasion forces and letting the Japs pound her while my carriers surprise the Japanese carriers and pound them in return......

I've been able to use CVE's by transferring units onto them. I put a SBD on Long Island & a VMF unit on one of the other CVE's but only the LI seemed to launch raids. Not sure if it was because it was VMF unit or because it was armed with F4U's. I'll be experimenting more to see.
