Destroyer in the front should be easy. the two in he background are tough. The one in the back left has only the funnel visible but might be an Iowa class BB. I don't know he answer to this. BTW, the kitchen in my office has pretty much a similar view as this!

The two background ships look like heavy cruisers.

Definitely not battleships (far too small). I'm thinking Northampton class.

The destroyer is the USS Gherardi, a Gleaves-class ship.

The ship on the right must be a Leander Class CL. Ship in the background left as terminus said most probably a Northampton Class CA

The cruiser on the right looks like it's had its superstructure mostly disassembled.

Unlikely to be a Leander. The pic is from the NY Navy Yards, and while a number of RN ships were refitted there, I don't think any Leanders were. Could be another RN CL type.

Pretty sure it's the Newcastle. She was there to get her bow replaced, and might have gotten a complete refit at the same time.

pretty sure no town class cl - look at the torpedo tubes and the bridge -> tubes too far forward for a town class cl and bridge structure too small
obviously the funnel(s) are missing - still my bet a leander or modified leander cl

Except that no Leander class (of either flavour) ever visited New York for repairs. One was repaired at Boston, another at Norfolk, and that's it. Newcastle is the only British cruiser of that general outline that was in NY during this timeframe.

HMS Ajax stopped at New York in March 43 before going to Norfolk for further repairs of bomb damage amidships after 1000lb bomb hit off Bone in the Mediterranean. The damage (2 boiler rooms out of order) corresponds with the fact that the slot has obviously been removed (either because of damage or to allow access). So i still say its a leander...

That is a Leander with the funnel and aircraft cats removed. Compare the silhouette to the line drawing here: http://gb-navy-ww2.narod.ru/HTM-CL-leander.html

thank you terminus. remains the question wich CA can be seen in the background left. My best guess is uss Augusta, second guess might be uss Chester (but i have no confirmation that Chester really was in New York). so it looks as if you were right about a northampton class ca.
