What is the best way to provide my carrier task force with combat air patrol (CAP) and send some fighter as escort on offensive missions? Assuming a single fighter group to work with.

If you are asking the basic game mechanics of how to do it, set the unit to "Escort". Once you do, a list of "Patrol levels" will appear. Set the percentages to however you want the pilots' missions to be divided up for the day.

If you are trying to escort a land attack, make sure you set the target as the same target for your bombers.

If you're asking about how to decide the percentages devoted to Escort, CAP, LRcap, Train and Rest then the answer is "It depends".

If you expect lots of enemy fighters over the target your bombers are flying to, then use relatively low levels for the options in the "Patrol levels" area. This allows most of the unit to fly Escort.

If you are worried about defending your CV TF from imminent enemy naval attacks, be sure to assign a higher percentage to CAP.

Personally, I find this to be one of the more agonizing decisions in the game - probably similar to how the real life commanders felt. But things like this are what make the game so great. You really feel worried and on edge most of the time playing. How many other games make you feel like that?

This picture pretty much sums up how I feel half the time I'm entering orders and watching combat replays.

Big point. I definitely dropped the ball by not pointing this one out.

Thanks guys for all the quick posts! The discussions here are as interesting as the game itself. Well, most posts are.... lol

I have the basics of the mission and patrol selection down. It's the max range that has me scratching my head. In the nice graphic icedawg provided, will the CAP patrol run out to the max range shown? Or do patrol orders even consider range? I ponder this because I had some groups running just CAP. When I set range to 2 trying to protect some incoming ships, the fatigue started going way up vs. having range set to 0 or 1. So I suspect range does play into patrols. So is there an answer to have my one fighter group run CAP at 0 range and still have the remainder run escort out to max range?

Range already answered in the thread started by yourself earlier this month.

As to splitting up the single fighter unit, as has been mentioned before, there is no mechanism for a unit to have multiple ranges or multiple missions or multiple altitudes or multiple anything.

I thought only LRCAP could choose a land target for fighters? Otherwise it would be a matter of luck that fighters could coordinate an escort. Cant check right now..

Read s.7.2.1.7 of the manual.

You can set a target for any offensive mission, excluding naval attack against a TF. Setting a target has certain advantages but also certain disadvantages. Only Patrol and Training missions gain no benefit from having a target set.

Ok seems like I was wrong. I was wondering at some point why on earth not a single plane was escorting my Bettys when I had set the (presumably) LRCAP to another island in hopes that part of the planes would LRCAP and part escort..

Don't forget sweep uses targets. This is often a better alternative to escorting the bombers in, you will lose less fighters and shoot down more of his. The bombers will benefit but only if the fighters get there first. If they're coming from different bases, the local weather at each base may influence what turns out.

It is best to sweep the target a few days prior to the bombing...sweeps seem to never go in before the bomb run when you need them to.
