LarryF and I kept playing on and we jointly decided to revisit an old favorite six months later... We will cover the missed time and get to about two weeks delay and hopefully keep it current from there.

I want to thank several AAR authors and posters here for improving my game... currently I have most of Burma, I have retaken Rangoon and are looking to eject the LYB's from Pegu... Singapore is STILL in Allied hands and resupplied from Medan under air cover... The South Pacific is like whack a mole back n forth with no advantage as of September 42 (still better then six months ago...) I'll let Larry have a say about his side of things first then we'll get into the meat and potatoes stuff.

Week of March 15th-22nd

The Allied TF I put together to sack Kwajalein because sub reports said no Capital ships, instead found CVE,BB and a large assortment of WARSHIP's waiting for them - in addition to aerial bombardments that sank nearly every single ship out there.

Manila in the Phillipines undergoes heavy bombardments of both TF's and aerial variety, better than +1500 casualties and moderate damage to the base and facilities. again if you read back in these reports - it won't be too long before Manila falls... She lasted much longer than I thought

Darwin and Brisbane are under attack by CV based aircraft... Several AK's in both ports are damaged...

There are a few successful sub attacks damaging 2 AK + 1 AKL Both TF's were escorted by a singe PB...

Japanese forces CAPTURE Surigao !!!

Week of Mar 23 - Mar30, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manila still getting pounded this week too.
Larry has created 3 Bombardment TF's... they hurt!

(Legend #destroyed/#disabled)
BB Haruna @ Darwin - 209 casualties 2/7 sqds - 2/14 NC - 0/3 Eng
BB Ise @ Cagayan - 306 casualties 0/21 sqds - 25/11 NC - 0/0 Eng Guns 1/4 Vehicles 2/3 -
BB Hyuga @ Port Moresby 23 casualties 0/0 sqds - 0/4 NC - 0/0 Eng

Larry also has BB Kirishima, 2CA, 1CL, 3DD encounter my 4 DMS near Canton Is - results are predictable CA Chikuma and CL Natori each take o-n-e shell hit each... well lets just say nobody got less than 10 hits and nobody got hit with more than 19... but all four are now fish hatcheries in the Pacific!

Diego Garcia is quickly becoming a nuisance - Larry has approx 3-4 subs hanging around and I'm trying to get some supply in there for the Eng unit to use. I-123 hits 2 AK's,1 TK & the KV trying to sink him all in the same day...

3/27/42 I held BB Pennsylvania back and tried sneaking it into Seattle... outside Coos Bay she eats 4 torps from I-116... and more points to Larry's side of the ledger...

AO Kurumba gets found outside Luganville by DD Arare... guess what 17 shells later shes on fire B U T not sunk...7 PT's nearby intercede but DD Arare just swats them away, sinking one, damaging two...yeah, AO "Aye" Kurumba sinks the next day.

Finally Manila gets one good smackback - Larry does a deliberate attack and loses 8,995 casualties vs. 2401 casualties for the USA/PI

In Burma Toungoo fell to the Japs, but a counterattack is in the planning stages - I'm diverting the Aussie & British LCU's releasing from the African front and will be running them to Bombay RR'ing them to Calcutta then to Chittagong. I also have to get some air power there and am diverting P-39's from Eastern USA to Cape town then I will air transport TF thme to Calcutta from there.

Ok - with no obvious reaction... I'll skip the intermediate turns and move forward to two weeks before the game date;

I'll note unusual happenings first

Larry parked a TF at Ndeni - I have both an Avenger sqdn and a SBD sqdn at Luganville on the second day of bombing BB Haruna and either 1CA/1CL or 2CL's took 1000lbs bombs - no sinkings reported, day 3 saw BB Haruna take 3 500/1000lbs bombs and she appeared in the sinkings list on day 4. The TF cleared out shortly afterwards...

As I said earlier, I sent British and Australian LCU's to Calcutta for the long trek down Burma... Aircover provided by 3 P-39D sqdns and 5 Hurri variants (1b & 1c's) along with every group I could coax into becoming Blemheim medium bombers. Akyab, Chittagong & Calcutta are the original bases, then Mitkitya,Maylaybay, & Toungoo are captured and turned against thier former owners... The current situation is I have ejected the LYB's from Pegu and the IJA is in disarray, as I'm also using Pt Blair's PBY-5a's to bomb Moulemein's airfield too.

In a tribute to my ineptitude I point out that SF has 9.2M in supply waiting at the docks. I cant get the Tracker to work properly because of my running Vista 64 and Java WILL NOT leave any version of 6 and updates to V7... even when I save it first... again my ineptitude is the problem - nothing anybody else who tried to help me worked.

I also had something happen in the game I've never seen before - I have 6 P39D/P400 sqdns at S.F. When I had an infestation of subs around S.F. I set all the planes on ASW and I also had 6 sqdns of P39D/P400 fighters sitting there trying to gain experience. I set them up to Naval Attack @ 1000 Ft... They went sept 3-6 without finding anything, then on Sept 7th... 12P-26 35 P-39Ds and 25 P400's ALL attacked at 100ft... sinking THREE subs! Now I know about FOW and fully expect this is exaggerated, but what triggered the attack after 3 turns of nothing? Beats me...

UPDATE:

Singapore still is in Allied hands (good hands?) I have 2 Hurri sqdns and 2 Wellington sqdns along with an Albacore TB wreaking havoc on the invaders... He outnumbers me 75K to 69K in troops but he has supply problems all over apparently...I have been causing an average of 100 casualties per turn bombing him and he has tried bombarding me and ends up losing 2-3K in troops every time... so its looking pretty good for me there, I am able to escort TF's of supplies from Colombo to Medan to Singapore with aircover courtesy of 3 P-40E sqdns at Medan/Georgetown/Sinibang...

I also amphib'd the 4th,5th & 6th British Inf Brigades, a RAF Base Force (can't remember which one right now) and a light AA group to Victoria Point in late August... They landed with little opposition and quickly established the base and airfield... Larry has run up an Inf Brigade(?) to oppose me there from Chumpion... further splitting his forces - which is the plan!

Larry expressed disdain for the China war - but has done a fair job of fortifying his strongpoints so I cant just run amok there... The lack of experience and weapons is killing the troops, but its also the only way to get them the experience they need... so hasten forward quickly there!!! (CHARGE!!!)

Suva / Pago Pago / Palmyra are my solid bases and building up Christmas Is. is in progress... I have NOT moved the Seabees construction battalions from the West Coast and have over 25 units there now - I'm building up the Marine Airfield at (Death Valley) and its raising nearly one level per turn with 15 Seabee LCU and 45K in supply at the base. I'll be moving the training squadrons there after it reaches level 7.

The reason I can't move the seabees and other vital troop LCU's is I've wasted a TON of AP's up to this point. Larry has been uncanny in his searches and keeps finding them, no matter how far I manually set them up to avoid the main shipping routes. His CVTF's were ALL over the Central and South Pacific sinking AP/AK/AKL like they were put there for practice... a Newbie mistake on my part, but I was also much more successful using Cape Town and Aden than I usually am against the A.I.

My bet is that either the D/L was not high enough on previous rounds [i.e. Nav Search did not find them] or weather/distance kept them from striking.
Very interesting result though. I have had good fortune with P-40Es on Low Naval strike @ 1000 feet - two squadrons sank a Japanese CA with about 13 hits by 500 lb. bombs! This was also before they had any training in Low Nav attack.

Re: the sub attack between Wake and PH, it is unlikely that a PB would be with a BB or CV TF because PBs are converted merchant ships and are slow. Most likely it was acting as a picket to warn of your ships approaching.

Thanks 1275psi - I was beginning to think I was on some kind of "shun"

The mod is awesome, it forces the japanese player to be aggressive and capture the resource/oil bases to ship to the Home Is. A.S.A.P. to pay for the increased goodies produced. As I am relatively inexperienced as the Jpaanese player I am always crashing the ecomomy because I was meddling too much with the plane, ship & armaments production... I have learned and practiced reading the Japanese Economy primer and now follow the advice there...mostly

Tell me - what style of AAR do you prefer? Pix? or written? combo? I have limited skills with the pix as you can tell and haven't mastered the art of cutting down the paint jpg. to reasonable size without making it unreadable... So I have been writing trying to imitate some of the popular posters here until I find my "style"... All suggestions and comments gratefully accepted!

I see, <grin> I'm just afraid its TOO unhistorical... I mean on one hand keeping the shipping lanes clear and getting that kind of result with 2nd hand planes is pretty cool, BUT its also "gamey"... I figured sea attacks with 500lb bombs would be a great fish kill but not effective against submarines (unless you absolutely surprised them on the surface).

Yes a CA would be a different story if you caught one out in the open... then happy hunting until you run out of bombs (then throw your shoes at them like the Europeans do at each other!)

Yeah Larry F is well known for picket ships... around Mid August he ran a 5 BB BTF at Midway, supported by (I'm guessing) CVTF of 2-3 CV/CVE's (40-Zeros, 60+ Vals, and 30+ Kates). I have been running the subs all over up there trying to find out where he went, Last time he went south but I have 6-8 subs heading north to catch him so I figured he went west this time... still havent seen him since.

PS I have 2 subs sitting either in Wake or next to it since he bombarded me... I'm sorry I didn't make that clear from the description. One downside to picking the game back up from six months ago.

BTW What style of AAR do you like? same question to you as to 1275psi, if you dont mind answering...

BTW What style of AAR do you like? same question to you as to 1275psi, if you dont mind answering...

It depends a bit on how often you are updating. If you post fairly often and I can keep up with the game, maps showing the situation about once a month are fine. If you go a long time between posts, I need to see maps and an overview description to get back in the picture. I read a lot of AARs and it doesn't take too long to get them jumbled in my head!

As far as the rest of it, a summary of key occurrences is OK for most turn. I only want to see combat reports when something really important [CV battle or major warships duking it out] or very unusual happens.

About once every two months of game time a look at the sunk ship list for both sides is of interest.

Thanks for the reply - I'll be happy to do that...

For a rookie - its easy to mess up because my viewpoint of whats important is a decidedly different seat from an experienced gamer.

I agree that pix are important, but having the skill to adjust the sizing while keeping it readable for the viewer is just as important and something I'm not very good at. I use Paint and .jpg for the pix and if I try to reduce it by the percentages it becomes very difficult to read. If I leave it alone then its huge on the AAR posting... Larry tried helping me and pointed out Imgur as an alternative but I dont seem to get it to work correctly either

I was immensely enjoying John3rd and Canoerebel's AAR's and use that and Capn Mandrake & Sprior as my benchmarks. I intend no disrespect to any others just they have a flair for writing and make it an easy and enjoyable read. I did try to break it down to areas of fighting like John3rd but found myself overwhelmed with trying to keep my notebook up to date and "organizing" where the action was - that became too much for the free time I had available.

I'm giving this a shot again because as one of my first PBEM games, I appreciate the effort Larry has put in and not quitting when the Japanese start facing quality and quantity in thier opponents... As well as the opportunity to learn from experienced players who look in to see how we're doing and offer words of encouragement and advice that is valuable.

So thanks again - and if your reading this PLEASE feel free to jump in and comment, offer advice, criticism is welcome too... I can handle it!

Ok I'll start with my incompetence, I pretty much have a 1-2 ratio on everything as Larry is a pretty good player... and I'm not! I have gained a slight advantage in Carrier's sunk, even in the flattops - slightly ahead in the CVE/CVL types... I dont even want to discuss the rest
