Rest Mode, set for upgrade, Command HQ in range, sufficient supply, sufficient ARM/VEH, sufficient manpower, in a base ... I think those are all the checks.

By sufficient this means 20k right?

So not much on islands will upgrade since no Command HQ is in range, I assume. Can I send one by on a transport?

As to HQ, yes, I send the 5th Naval HQ around to take of my island TOE's.

A lot of these units actually did upgrade their TOE even out of range of an HQ. Some still don't have the requisite supply, but might soon at Babeldaob for instance.

This is useful, and I wish I knew about it before.

26 - 27 August 1944

Jocke is on vacation so the game is on hold for a bout a week. I'm sitting on the turn which is nice. I can do some things that needed to be done behind the scenes and a bit of deeper planning. These turns were played a few days ago but I'm just getting around to updated this now.

SUBS: The I-39 gets nailed near Sangi. Still no meaningful hits on cripples.

PI: Jocke arrives at Cagayan with 860AV and bombards. he'll need to bring more, and will soon. He takes Oroquieta easily with a tank unit. I've decided to keep units at both Davao and Dadjangas to make him isolate and take each independently. It's all about time here, and denying easy bases.

The KB is still filling out and getting upgraded back to best fighting status. It's been a well-timed break. I'll be using it only if the conditions are right though. LBA will be the first option now. That is also getting back to normal, and I'll try to wait until there are good targets exposed in forward positions before unleashing it all. My ally is the overconfidence of the Allied approach, and getting him comfortable again after the last strike is key. I'll have to serve up some freebies for a while.

S/SW PAC: Jocke tries another DA at Sidate, and nearly gets the base. Then the next day he does. My crushed regiment and guard units retreat the opposite direction from Manado into the jungle. That's not very helpful. I thought they are supposed to go toward the best supply lines?

Manado will be next on the menu, and I'll lose a division for that one. Fragments are being taken out. He also DAs at Sansapor cleaning up the rear. That will fall soon too. Some fragments are out and more being transported. I think getting fragments is a better choice so that I don't have to pay PPs for destroyed units.

Jocke is very concerned with Rabaul lately, probably because valuable shipping, (cripples?) will be coming through here soon. He does lose a few PV-1 to flak each day, so that's fine.

NORTH PACIFIC: About 15 Helens were massacred as Jocke moved some CVEs into Dutch again. No biggie. I'll move these back to Adak and hold to see what happens now. It looks now like he might try something before winter, or why put anything up here at all?

S DEI: Nothing moving up yet, but Darwin continues to be flush with troops again. They must be railing in as I'd thought, or he's bringing them back on shipping, but I don't see that happening.

BURMA: Still working out the best method of retreat here. It might be tricky if not timed just right. The Allies do have a lot on the other side of the fence, and if I send the guard dogs away they'll come crashing through in a hurry.

Jocke keeps bombarding a if it's doing something here. His troops are getting the worst of it by far, so I'm not complaining. If his losses are coming from Commonwealth pools, so much the better.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Still pounding away at Tinian. It's costing in planes and pilots, but I have a lot of ground skill experts, so that doesn't hurt much in the long run. It's seemingly keeping him from basing fighters here, which is the point. Fighters are the first steps to the downward spiral seen too often before in this game, so if I can keep this uninhabited for a while longer, maybe he'll decide to risk another island landing soon.

Remember that for TOE it is 2xRange of HQ ... 18 hexes helps a lot.

It's been a while since I've felt like updating here. The game has been moving forward by fits and starts as we take turns on vacation. It's really not easy to come into a late 44 situation and pick up after a few days away, even with a few guiding notes. I feel I've not been playing my best but so far there have not been any major catastrophes at least.

I'll slowly update up to the present over the next week. The game will be slow as we've got house guests here and it is summer! The best London has had in a while. Always between 25-33 C (~72-88 F). Woohooo!

Saw the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park just over a week ago. Amazing. And they're 70 years old now! Crazy.

SUBS: I've been upgrading most subs to radar and getting them situated so that if there is a big move by the Allies in the Phillipene Island area I can flood the narrow channels with 15-20 subs. I'll be congregating them in the Indochinese ports for this purpose.

DEI: Three groups of Frances got good shots at invasion convoys at Sidate but only could score one TT hit on the CA Astoria. Pretty disappointing, as the APA and other valuable targets were untouched. All of those crews had 70 exp in TT. The flak was pretty tough, and 11 planes were lost just from it.

In the South DEI the Aussies move finally and take Babar. I sent in the IJN and got nothing at first. We'll see what happens next round.

S/SW PAC: Jocke is still bombing Rabaul and trying to take small islands close to his shipping lanes. He failed again at Rossel Island with a small NZ unit there. The Allies finally break through and take Sansapor after a long siege. I've got some of those troops out at least.

PI: I send two small quick E with torps into the Cotabato area and pick off a TF of LST and LSI. These little ships do their job and sink 16 of the landing ships. not bad. Just harassment, but I've got some other ideas of how to build on this small success as well.

A deliberate attack at Cagayan yields a 1:2 for the Allies and results in a few losses for them, but not enough to forestall a continued series of attacks here. Luckily the forts did not go down and I could still push to level 5 in a few days if lucky.

BURMA: Allied bombardments hit every day at 55, 51 and Toungoo, and I've made the choice to risk the clear hex to move troops back to Pegu. I think I'll lose some stuff this way, but moving into the wilds of the jungles might be too risky and cost me a whole stack. It's possible I could still scoot through and be just ahead of the Allied troops. It really depends on how much the over-powered 4E bombing in the clear works against my troops and how much if at al I'll be able to contest in the air.

SUBS: Not much happening with subs. Still getting good shots and getting a sub every few days sunk without a hit.

DEI: No movements further than Babar for now down there, and very little activity other than moving in PTs. I'll try to gauge when more is arriving and send in the BBs and CAs to see if I can mess up a landing somewhere.

Manado is crushed by several BB bombardments. Supply is getting low, but with the new Marine division there I will not likely add more to this slowly disintegrating defense.

S/SW PAC: I sent in several air groups to hunt for cripples after seeing the CVL Princeton earlier with a sub attack near Milne Bay. The assorted planes in range didn't find any big targets but hit some transports and a small tanker. It has to keep him a bit nervous though moving valuable ships around through the Solomon Sea to have several IJ bases still intact and operable, especially now that he doesn't get the extra pre-turn intel about whether I've moved planes in to a field overnight.

PI: Lots of sweeps go back and forth here as we try to see what an offensive mission looks like against his very big CAP at Cotabato. Not too good, but not any worse than when he sweeps our bases. About 1:3 results on the day, meaning about 60-70:180 in losses.

I sent in 4 small old DDs to the area near Mindanao and picked off a bunch of landing ships, but in spite of two brushes with a big APA TF we couldn't do much due to screening by the escorts. The DDs ran out of fuel and were crushed the next day, so mixed results here with this action. In VPs it's about equal, but in reality he obviously can afford to lose many of those ships while even crappy DDs are a bit more precious for me.

BURMA: I've given up Toungoo and moved south. The AA units and armies should meet in the clear hex in several days, hoping to avoid massacres. I'm prepping for some air cover in the area as well. Should be tense. The other stack at 55, 51 is also now moving and should meet this one in Pegu in 6-7 days. I hope to stall at Pegu for a few days and then move across the river and force him to decide on a flanking move or a direct assault across.

The Tojo is finished. In one offensive sweep 45 Tojo IIc were decimated, losing half of their number, for now return kills. It'll be relegated to defense and phased out as soon as the Ki-100 is ready.

SUBS: Two subs finally did some good, each putting one TT into an APA. One was lost outright and the other will attempt to limp home. At last some results though which bodes well for the massed sub deployments that will come soon.

DEI: At Babar I sent in the IJN but found only PTs. Still the ships did well, sinking about 10 for no hits against. Massive bombings hit Lautem and knock out the fields, but the Franks there did some work and got even numbers against the P-38 sweeps. It could be slow going down here unless he commits CVs.

Manado gets a DA and is now on the ropes. Supply is nil and the AV went to about 1/3 of what the Allies have here after the attack. It'll fall soon.

SINGAPORE: The port is hit by B-29s, which must be based in Central Burma now. Only one small CMc sinks, luckily, and the rest of the damaged are put in the shipyard immediately. A group of jacks is based here now as well as Irvings for NF work. If he comes again the price in B-29s will outweigh any losses in the low quality ships here.

BURMA: The troops moved out of the woods into the clear and a few straggling arty units were destroyed by the advancing Allied stack. An air battle was fought over the facing armies with the IJ planes again losing about 1:3, but the P-51B suffered at least. Now I have to hope the AA can reduce the carnage for a few days. The other stack is moving nicely, untouched, toward Rangoon and then to Pegu.

CENTRAL PACFIC: Tinian looks to be closed and the AA is diminishing, a good sign. One bomber unit is shifted to port strike to make any resupply efforts difficult. Truk and Ponape are now slowly being evacuated, but it'll take quite a while to remove all of the valuable troops. Jocke hasn't bothered to interfere with any of these movements, which is very nice of him.

PI: Near Mindanao the MTBs couldn't get through the screen of the escorts on a big amphib TF but got to a small landing craft flotilla later sinking a few more. I know he gets hundreds of these, but it must be possible to make a dent in them if this kind of action continues.

There is an occasional glimpse of light within the growing darkness.

The hardest thing is to try to move back at my own pace rather than being forced to by the Allies with the accompanying heavy losses. I feel like so far I'm close to my goals for the end of 44 at least, which include; 3 million HI savings, at least even on VPs, still sending fuel/oil back home, and still having some navy to fight back in spots.

BIG TURNS! These three days were filled with tension, intrigue and wildly swinging emotions as the KB makes a surprise move into the Celebes Sea and the Allied stack catches elements of the Burma Army.

BURMA: First on the 7th I was kicking myself because I chose to stand down LR CAP to rest and it just happened that this day his sweeps did not fly!

There could have been some serious carnage over the clear hex near Pegu, but instead I lost over 3,000 casualties in one day of bombing!!!

He does pay some price, losing about 14-17 bombers to flak.

The next day fighters again interdicted the airspace and good results were achieved against the morning sweeps and the (fortunately) afternoon ground strikes. He lost 110+ planes to our 176 on the day. These attacks slowed several units though, including the 9th and 38th divisions and a few arty and AA units. He also attacked with tanks, further slowing the units but taking heavy vehicular losses.

On the 9th the main Allied stack arrived and inflicted severe punishment on the 38th division, destroyed some AA and arty units entirely and forced the rest back to Pegu with heavy losses. The 38th has NO AV rating currently and will be moved back to recover over several months no doubt. The rest of the troops make it to Pegu in fairly disrupted states, but will be soon joined by the rested and high moral units from the other stack and that should provide enough fortitude to get these troops across the river and into the jungle near Moulmein where they will be more secure.

Although this retreat was not as smooth as I'd hoped, it has at least not been disastrous, as it it could have easily been, and we should be able to hold indefinitely in the river crossing next to Moumein. This will force the Allies to choose between a dangerous shock over the river and a time-consuming slog through jungle toward Chang Mai. This is also 7-8 months after I anticipated this particular defensive line would be in use.

PI: Elements of the KB moved toward Cotabato on the 6th and I had hoped Jocke would guess it was there to protect a bombardment group aimed at that forward base. Instead the rest of it joined up in the night and moved into the sea lanes of the Celebes Sea! There were 3-4 major convoys moving through at the time, and although no invasion shipping was among them, the Allies lose a ton of second tier ships and a good number of troops on the day. LBA strikes came in as well and we got very lucky none of the planes getting through the CAP managed to score hits. The flak damaged nearly every strike, so that last upgrade worked wonders. The strikes also went against the fastest TFs, luckily, instead of choosing the CVEs or slower CVs, so the TB planes had a harder time. All around very fortunate.

On the day I think we destroyed around 65-75 Allied ships, the most valuable being a 13 point AK. About 260+ planes were shot down as well, one of the biggest totals of the war for the IJ, and I finally have a double ace for the first time in game, with 11 kills!

This is not anything that will stop Allied progress, but it should give a warning about moving too far forward before thoroughly mopping up the rear areas on the LOC. It was only possible as well due to increased recon and search making sure the Allied CVs were not in range recently. There are some CVEs at Sarmi but no sign of Allied fleet carriers. I'll keep the KB in the Celebes for one day to see if he comes for it with surface ships, restricting the strike ranges as all shipping will now be heavily CAPed, and then move back toward either Balikpapan or the PI depending on events.

It's good to have some double aces, now in 44 for the first time! These guys performed miracles during the battles on the 9th, keeping most of the strike planes off the CVs and gutting the Hellcats escorting. Who says the A6M is obsolete?

What a great three days for you and how demoralizing it must be for him. If not for the rout at Pegu the sheer numbers of allied men lost at sea is staggering, worthy of the best allied cover ups. Having never played to '44 I don't know what effect losing that many transports has but I suspect it will cost him time to figure out. Well done sir.

Thanks. It was a rare fortunate mix of good timing, well chosen settings and enemy targets without CAP up. Makes up for some of the many missed chances where the stars didn't align so well. Felt pretty good to watch as those 800kg bombs from the D4Y4s do some big damage fast.

I'm interested as well in what difference these kinds of moves can make in the late game. They're very risky, and I'm still not exactly sure how far away the Allied CVs were/are since they haven't shown definitively in searches yet (several days later now). Often my search shows TFs that have things like AVs and CAs where I think it might be the CV fleet and then they disappear before I know for sure. He could use this kind of situation to attempt to lure me into ambushes as we move forward, so I'll have to really be on the lookout.

As for the transports, it is a lot of ships. Considering the Allies have many hundreds, still, taking out a good number like this means that if he was using mediocre xAPs to bring troops forward, then maybe now he has to use more valuable ships for rear area actions, either slowing forward progress or bringing more valuable ships into more risky situations more often. I'm really not sure though. The sheer number of medium sized xAPs sunk should mean that he lost a good number of troops (again no idea what kind) and that he doesn't have a lot of that variety left.

It's all accumulative, and with kamis on the horizon, several more strikes of this kind could really begin to have an effect. He'll likely keep CVs in covering range though, now.

While I'm sure he was plenty of transports overall, losing that many near the front line costs him time to readjust as well. The loss of the support forces should force him to scramble a little bit to reassign and bring up others.

SUBS: Allied subs are working the middle of the South China Sea but haven't yet found success out there. There are also a few off the tip of Luzon near Legaspi. There don't seem to be any others anywhere, so either he's hoarding them for a massed move (as I am) or there just aren't too many around.

DEI: The KB moves back and hides near Balikpapan, seemingly off the search grid now. No DL showed on any of the TFs, so I chose to send them back around Borneo out of sight and up toward the PI again that way. Still no clear sighting os the Allied CVs. There is a strange set of TFs moving up toward the Carolines on a vector toward Wolaei. Looks like a few AMC in one 6 ship TF, several escorts in a 4 ship grouping, and another transport TF of 5 ships. I've put Emilys on TT hunting and a groups of Frances with 70 escorting Jacks from Rota as well. He may be using these as bait and then moving CVs up with them to kill off srikes. We'll see.

S/SW PAC: I moved the small 12 plane Grace Chutai back into Rabaul with Georges and Franks, and we got a free shot at some TFs near Milne Bay. Unfortunately the pilots picked out some of the smallest and least significant ships there as targets, namely two tiny Dutch AO Tan ships which were crushed. One more bomb dropped on an xAK, but they apparently ignored a TF of AP shown in the rollover there. Tomorrow I'm risking keeping them there but I'll restrict range to aim for other areas and drop altitude to use TT from 5k instead of dive-bombing from 10k. Amazing the versatility the Grace allows. Love it.

S DEI: The IJN was targeted by several flights of B-25 and Beaufort TB strikes and in spite of good LR CAP the Nagato eats one TT. Most of the planes were destroyed but this will likely mean a trip back to the HI to patch up the 20 (9) float damage inflicted. Nagato is still making 22 knots and I sent her back to Soerabaja with one DD. The other ships also pull back as I fear a CV strike reprisals after the recent Celebes actions. Our LR CAP suffered about 10 ops losses as well and is weakened. I move more CAP into Lomblen as heavy sweeping went over on the 11th.

BURMA: All units make Pegu from both sides and unite as one army of almost 6k AV. There are still 3 fresh anti-tank units, a bunch of heavy arty and 6 untouched divisions in addition to the troops disrupted by recent air raids. I am sending all back across the river immediately. I hope air raids don't weaken some so they lag behind, as anything left here in 4 days when the Allied stacks unite will be toast. If he attacks before that though, thinking the clear hex and air power enough to overwhelm our armies at last I think we can inflict a serious defeat on the Allied forces under the level 6 forts. There is also so much AA here that a full 80% of bombers over the hex on the 10th were damaged or destroyed. No strikes came on the 11th, either rained in or stuck at base repairing.

CENTRAL PACFIC: One last hit of supply is nearing Truk, and the evacuation is on after that. All units at Ponape, Truk and other bases farther out will be removed as best we can get them. A holding force will remain at Truk and Ponape to thwart an easy grab.

The Nagato is sitting a bit lower in the water but is making good steam back to safer waters. We've continued the good luck of not having any BBs lost as yet, but another will be out of action for several months as it moves on the long road back to the HI. The Hyuga is at Yokohama and will be repairing for another 3 months.

Hey Joseph. I'm banking a lot on the experiences from the GJ/rader game where these things could sweep away even late war Allied fighters. Getting even 1:1 in 45 would be sensational. For us with the 2nd best band HR it's even more important for me to have the fighters that can be up there with the P-47s and Hellcats and over the Corsairs and Spits, so this and the Frank Ir will be important.

How did you find the Nick's and what's their operational shelf life in your opinion? I'm concentrating on the Ia's and wondering when you felt they became ineffective? I'm even experimenting with them in a high CAP role to take advantage of their armour and cannon. I believe the cannon was elevated 45-60 degrees, but not sure if the air mechanics take that into consideration when in a fighter vs. fighter role.

SUBS: I'm piling subs into the Sulu Sea as a holding patrol until I see any more movements forward in this area. I'd like to have 20 here in the near future. About 10 have arrived as of now. Another 10 or so will wait to the East of the PI.

PI: Cotabato is a level 9 base now and hosts 450+ fighters, 450+ bombers, and 450+ auxilliary planes (which I'm guessing are mostly repairing bombers after the flight in). I wonder if the B-29s moved here too. Shanghai is 35 hexes away.

I've moved most of the bombers out of Manila and distributed them better around the area. I need more fighters here and will be able to move some in tomorrow.

S/SW PAC: Yap is the target of the ships I saw yesterday in the area. He's moved CVs and invasion forces to within one hex of the base. I think he was trying to get there yesterday from his email message. One Emily group skewered itself for no result today. I'll put the other on night TT strike for tomorrow. Jocke lost a bunch of Helldivers and Hellcats for an AMc at Babeldaob, and if he keeps them on strike will lose more tomorrow as a small TF is moving in to pick up troops. Business as usual.

I've moved in 80 DB and 45 TB to the Babeldaob/Peleliu bases, with about 200 fighters flying escort. These are separated by height and base though so each potential strike group is geared to fly with fighters from it's own base. I hope to coordinate better this way and split his CAP.

I'm leaving a zero unit on Yap in the hope the base will be left open and I can use CAP to escort planes in strikes (which works for all strikes throughout the two phases). I've also moved in 35 Frances to Guam with 100+ escorts and 50 Peggy (T) to Rota with 50 Oscars. I've set a high/low attack, and I'll probably lose a bunch of planes, but he only seems to have about 5-6 fleet CVs and a few CVE with this invasion if the numbers are right form the search rollovers. There is map below.

I don't dare hope, but even one early hit on a CV could turn the day to a misery for the Allies. The invasion could also be vulnerable as the Frances are only set to that distance and could fly for the base hex only, not the Allied CVs. We'll see!

Also today I got another two small TK in the Solomon Sea, this time with Graces dropping TT from 5k. No opposition. I'll keep this going until he decides to do something about it. His LOC is within an easy 8 hex strike range from Rabaul and there are some xAP sitting around at Manus right now.

S DEI: Jocke moved most fighters and bombers out of Darwin. I'm guessing many of these went to Cotabato. interesting. I don't think I can do anything about it, but he only has 110 fighters over his combat and invasion TFs at Darwin now. There are still 200 bombers there, I'm guessing 2E, and that is a bit dangerous still. I've moved two SAGs back to near Lomblen to be close for the next round.

BURMA: Well, I've either been lucky or Jocke's bombers are suffering from the flak damage more than I'd been able to hope. no bombing occurred at Pegu for the second day in a row. This is a great boon as troops are able to move freely and disruption goes down. I still have a selection of troops that look like they'll take 5 days (from starting out) to get across the river. That presents a problem. I don't want his other stack to join an attack here, and it'll be suiciding them to leave them an extra day there. One unit is the 9th division that got roughed up a few days ago. I might risk movement in reserve mode, which is as fast as move mode, during the last day of movement. I think they'll suffer from the air, but not from ground attacks if they should materialize that day.

Rangoon falls today without a fight. That tipped the VPs a bit and gave a big shot to the Allies, even though we don't play absolutely for the score.

My LR CAP over Pegu is extensive and if his sweeps/strikes do fly soon I'll likely lose a bunch of planes again. About 400 planes are set here, so it'll be a blood-bath for both sides I'm sure, or I should say I hope!

CENTRAL PACFIC: There is almost no flak at Tinian now, and I'm getting extensive hits on Port and Fields. I may even start in on troops soon even though there is no way I can mount an invasion. If I rough the troops up more it'll take even more supply away though, and should become a downward spiral effecting combat strength for some time to come.

Here is the promised map of the Southwest Pacific area. As seen here unless he's bringing more in tomorrow this could be a good opportunity to hit some CVs. Not the full Death Star, and already a tad bit weakened after yesterday. I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I doubt I'll get much here realistically. I'm also trying to fly in more troops to Yap. If he scrimped and only brought one division I might be able to stall him.

It's tense. If he attacks it'll be a close-run thing. I think we can hold for at least a 1:2 with level 6 forts and 5800 AV, plus good amounts of arty and three anti-tank battalions, a ton of HQs and support. It could be close. If he gets a 1:1 and keeps going for several days we're screwed.

In the Southern DEI he's seemingly going slowly and carefully, but there are no CVs or even CVEs to cover. It's all LBA. I'm going to move the two fast TFs of the KB close enough for a one day strike and see if I'm picked up. If not, I might try for the ships at Darwin. Some APA and some CA/CL would be a good haul and worth even blunting the KB striking power on.

Cotabato is another of the massive airbases Jocke builds and operates from consistently. It's nearly impregnable, with multiple TFs of Fletchers and PTs guarding the approaches and 490+ fighters in base. I'll have to keep working behind him as I can't take this on yet without 31k+ sweepers.

Down here Jocke is seemingly ignoring the DBs and fighters I've put into Rabaul. That may not last, but in the meantime I'l keep trying to annoyingly pick off whatever sails past.
