6/14-6/15/44 SUBS SS Sealion sinks SC Ch-61 off nago. SS RO-13 is sunk by USN escorts near Catbalogan. CBI Dave captures the dot hex at Tienshui with paratroopers. I had moved my Tienshui garrison out a couple of turns ago to help fill the gap at Ankang..... realized my mistake last turn.... and then tried to move them back but they will arrive too late. Reinforcements are on the way from both central and northern China and we are moving LCUs to threaten to cut the Nanyang/Ankang road in 2 or 3 places. Tenth Air Force has staged heavy bombers to China and they are working over IJA armor around Ankang. SWPAC: INVASION LUZON Lead elements of V Amphibious Corps enter Naga while Fifth Air Force medium and tac bombers attempt to pin some 28,000 IJA troops in place there. A deliberate attack is ordered for next turn. Fifth Fleet completes unloading of 2nd echelon troops, construction engineers and BFs at Legaspi. Dave sent in an IJN surface TF to interfere with the landings but they were repulsed by a Fifth Fleet surface TF after a surprisingly short gunnery battle: Night Time Surface Combat, near Legaspi at 82,82, Range 8,000 Yards Japanese Ships CL Tama, Shell hits 5 CL Tatsuta DD Fujinami, Shell hits 1 DD Hayashimo, Shell hits 1 Allied Ships CA Shropshire, Shell hits 4 CA Dorsetshire, Shell hits 1 CL Gambia CL Newcastle CL Birmingham, Shell hits 1 DD Bagley DD Blue DD Helm DD Mugford DD Nestor DD Nizam, Shell hits 1 Reduced sighting due to 28% moonlight Maximum visibility in Partly Cloudy Conditions and 28% moonlight: 8,000 yards Range closes to 24,000 yards... Time for all group planes to reach interception is 9 minutes 8 planes vectored on to bombers Sometimes CAP and LRCAP works magnificently over Air Combat TFs and sometimes it doesnt. Fifth Fleet had 10 CVEs/CVLs hit by Japanese naval bombers. CVL Hermes and CVE Anzio sink immediately. Of the other 10 damaged CVEs.... 5 of the least damaged CVEs are detached into escort TF 341 and sent back to New Guinea for repairs...covered by the rest of Fifth Fleet. The other 5 damaged CVEs have 95 FLT or worse.... basically floating(sinking) hulks and they are left behind at Legaspi under the cover of 200 land based fighters. Hopefully they siphon off some of the Japanese naval air strikes next turn from the rest of Fifth Fleet. I detached the 13 CVs and 9 CVLs of TG 58 from the rest of Fifth Fleet last turn and sent them NE into the Philippine SEa to both get them out of harm's way from kamikaze attacks and also be ready to intercept KB if they showed up off Luzon. This was probably a fortunate move as none of them were involved in this last turn's naval airstrike debacle. TG 58 got a measure of revenge for the CVE losses as they found and obliterated an IJA troop convoy off the northern tip of Luzon: Morning Air attack on TF, near Batan Island at 88,70 Weather in hex: Light rain Raid spotted at 33 NM, estimated altitude 15,000 feet. Hundreds of long ranged Allied fighters are staged into Mindanao to cover the withdrawal of Fifth Fleet from Legaspi. Two new CVEs reach Sansopar this turn and they will sail out to meet Fifth Fleet. Another 4 new/newly repaired CVEs depart Rabaul this turn and make their way up towards Sansopar to also join up with Fifth Fleet. CV Victorious and CV Invincible arrive at Sydney this turn and head north to eventually join the fast carriers of TG 58. And finally.... CV Bunker Hill completes repairs this turn from its near death experience in 1/44 supporting ampbib operations off NW New Guinea and leaves Pearl Harbor to sail to the war zones. In 2 weeks TG 58 will have 16 CVs and 9 CVLs.....nearly 2000 AC. The Japanese lost 440 AC this turn vs 112 Allied AC in air battles over Fifth Fleet and Ankang in China. Japan lost 350 AC the turn before so thats nearly 800 AC in 2 turns. I would imagine that the Japanese fighter pilot and torpedo bomber pilot pools must affected by these losses.
