Very much one of those out of the box ideas.

Works for both sides of course, and the Japanese do for sure get SST conversions.

When you say SST, I assume these are regular fleet boats using the transport mission, not a conversion ?

When I say SST I mean the three conversions. There is a fourth (USS Barracuda I believe) that comes much later in the war. I have used less than a dozen SS transport missions to haul supplies from Rabaul to the PI and Soerbaja ditto. In general I think those assets are better used to kill ships and scout.

Converting the three to SST gives up their ability to use the much better mid-war submarine mines. It's a trade-off.

There are a couple (Argonaut, plus I believe Nautilus and maybe Narwhal) that are eligible for conversion/upgrade to SST type instead of SS. This gives them a small amount of Troop Capacity. I wasn't convinced of their usefulness, and maybe I'm still not, but Moose's AAR here is making me reconsider.

RockyRoo convinced me. I was opposed as I like the bigger mines later on. But it has worked well so far. Because I didn't understand the limitations on what units SSTs can carry I had a mismatch between where the subs were and where the parachutists were. I'm fixing that, but it takes time. Two SSTs are working in the Marshalls, and one out of Rabaul.

Thanks.

As I said, a very interesting approach. Potentially ties down a lot of forces, for relatively little investment.

I like the SST conversions. You have sub-mines, even if they aren't the biggest. So going with the conversions is a diversification of your assets. Gives you some capabilities you didn't have before. Even if you aren't doing raiding you can do stuff like provide supply to sieged bases, sneak in a few AV springled over untaken dot hexes so you can pop Cat searches in and out, etc..
(DEI is a good candidate if your opponent doesn't clean up dot hexes, or even PI - you lose a lot of cats tho, and the engineers are sitting ducks ;). Sure you can do this with an AVD too, just differently with different risks.

I'm extra non-lurky because all the damn AARs I read are on summer slow down! ;)

Back after a week in Big Sky Country, Montana. I have no idea what was going on in this game or AAR ten days ago. Have to get back up to speed; Mike had a turn in my box this AM.

A week gone and still hanging onto the anchor position on Page 1. Nice, but we need more active AARs, gents.

One photo from a day in Yellowstone National Park. The first national park in the world, and a World Heritage and World Biosphere site. Yellowstone is larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined and covers parts of three states (Wyoming, Montana, Idaho.) A visit should be on every American's bucket list.

Been twice. Amazing. Best experience was sitting in a hot spring in mid-winter when a Bull Bison sauntered up and decided to join the party. We got out real fast. He seemed to really enjoy himself in there while we shivered in the cold.

Good to see you back!

We saw three Bison bison. Waited 40 minutes for Old Faithful and she delivered.

Just ran the movie for the June 30 turn.

Wow.

More tomorrow.

Nah. Not native so far as I know. Elk, bison, bighorn sheep though. Eagles. Several kinds of jumping fish.

Many tourists of various sizes, shapes, and languages. Most had cameras. Pass the word.

They are definitely native. Saw a bunch around the Tetons, right behind a friend's condo. That was in the winter though.

Agree that Yellowstone is amazing.

I went last year, hired a 30' RV from LA (bit of a challenge for an Aussie driving on the other side of the road) and went via Yosemite. After Yellowstone went on up to Glacier NP and back via the Redwoods. Stunning scenery all round, but Yellowstone was the highlight.

The funniest thing that happened was that we saw a wolf cross the road in front of us. I pulled over, grabbed my camera and took off into the forest after it. I couldn't find it and went back to the car. My wife asked if I had seen it, and I said I had not. She then showed me footage from her camera, taken from the car...the wolf had circled back and sauntered past less than 2 meters from the car! Needless to say I copped alot of ribbing over that one!

Hope to go back in winter one day. It should be on everyone's bucket list.

Cheers

Did a google. There are three sub-species of moose in NA, and there are some in Yellowstone of the smallest variety. Last census was in the 1980s, and only about 1000 left. They were very hard-hit by the 1988 fires which destroyed about 1/3 of the park, and have also been affected by warmer than normal climate. The Minnesota moose (the middle-sized sub-species) has also been devastated by heat and parasites.

FWIW, I heard multiple negative comments from Montana natives about the fires being allowed to do their natural thing. The science on fires is clear cut and not in dispute--among scientists. Fire is essential to maintaining the biosphere balance. But natives are very angry that the park isn't as "pretty" as it once was. To me, looking at nature doing its thing on its own schedule as it has for millions of years, there is beauty enough.

And near-sighted. And very territorial. And not that smart. Many more tourists are hurt in the park by bison (NOT buffalo) than by bears.

I agree it's a world bucket list item; just wanted to prod my countrymen to get off the east coast and go see the wizard. The Grand Canyon is also something everyone should see once.

As is the Great Barrier Reef.

Isn´t Buffalos the African cow like animal that lions like to eat? Or am I missing some language stuff here? Or are there some kind of Buffalo in USA too?

The African one I´m referring to is called "Buffel" in swedish so it might be a language thing? The hairy not so cow like animal in USA we actually call Bison (pronounced differently than you say it. More like "beeson") and the european version of Bison is called Visent.

Three Is Far Better Than Two

Back to the war after about ten days away. Odd feeling of clumsiness as I did the turn. Easy to forget not only plans but basic interface steps. For example, I completely forgot to look at or re-program any air in China. Just forgot the whole theater. As it turned out it didn't matter. Titanic naval battles in the Marshalls as SNAGLEPUSS moves forward, far bigger than originally conceived. At the same time the air war in Sumatra, Java, and Burma reaches frantic, hurricane strength as Japan strives to stop Allied moves that may be war-winners if they succeed. As end-of-month turns go this one was a humdinger.

1) First, the main event: the Marshalls. Recall that "yesterday" (ten days ago) a USN Air TF of three CVs (the extra fighter cover with three is extremely important today--hence the title above) came near Kwajalein with red TF icons at Kwaj, Roi-Namur, and Wotje. Imperfect recon, but DB strikes launched on the BB-led surface TF and scored two 1000-lb hits on the BB. The USN air is there to sanitize for many large, important TFs coming from the east at about the height of Wake, destined to garrison Eniwetok and make it safe and a platform for further endeavors both east and west.

After the carriers got off scot-free I had to decide whether to withdraw to a better blocking position to the NW, or to go deeper into the island chain and hunt precious IJN BB and DDs. As much as he's hurt me in cruisers I've hurt him in DDs. Any improvement on that score would help a lot in 1943. I knew that LBA in the Marshalls was pretty weak; tiny Jake attacks are not coming form a position of strength. I had seen one CVE about ten days ago, but nothing since. Air search from Eniwetok, plus 30% DBs on search from the three carriers, had found nothing. Nothing at all.

Then three IJN CVEs pop up to the south, almost due south of my carriers. And well within attack range for both sides. It's on.

I had radio chatter intel of action at Ponape yesterday. This might be their perch; don't know. But there they are. And they get off their attack first. This set off a day of wild furballs, multiple slashing attacks, and edge-of-the-seat replays. I watched every one in real time.

This is a screenie of the tactical situation.

Morning Phase

The first Japanese attack is strong. Initially it is met by only seven CAP Wildcats and my heart sinks. I am going to lose three carriers. But as the movie rolls the Wildcats hold, and then the late arrivals feed in, and feed in, and feed in. Gradually they burn through the Zeros and the slaughter then is something to see. The surviving attackers are so disrupted that no hits are scored. And the CAP survives to fight later in the day.

One squadron of DBs, for some infuriating reason, ignore multiple naval targets and a Naval primary tasking, and go to bomb sand at Wotje. Could have used you guys!

And there it ended. I still don't know exactly how many IJN carriers started the day present. The IJN squadron names could be FOWed, or Japan might have swapped units or overloaded. I need to study this before tomorrow. But my best guess is three CVEs were sunk. About 60/40 the DD hit does not make Truk. The hits on BB Hyuga did not penetrate, but combined with yesterday's ought to amount to at least 25 system damage and maybe some fires. The question is whether the Japanese withdraw now, or double-down. Mike has just spent a week in Vegas, so maybe the latter. I need to watch sorties as the USN has work still to do before they can head for Pearl. The other two Pacific carriers have 4 and 5 days respectively before they finish upgrades there.

Overall this was a big win for the USN, at least in the short run. If the Eniwetok convoys get through Kwaj and Roi-Namur are pretty much lost to Japan, and Ponape is sitting vulnerable.

2) Elsewhere in SNAGGLEPUSS elements of the 2nd Marine Raiders are air-lifted onto a vacant, untaken Ocean Island. Supplies are sent to parachutists and Raiders on Makin and Arorae and Bikini. On NG, the Kangas are loaded on SST and sent north to probe islands near Yap for a gap to the Marianas. In the Marshalls, I need an air base deep in the chain to make the 50% parachutist rule work for the forward line of bases (Wotje, et al.) I have seen in other AARs that the naval fortresses there are push-overs to parachutists if forces can be landed without facing the CD.

3) Minesweeping is underway at Bataan. Manila will soon be a major fleet asset for the IJN.

4) In Sumatra and Java the air campaign continues at frantic levels with heavy losses to Japan from AA. Palembang's forts continue stalled at 26% to Level 6. At Soerbaja light CAP counters heavy Oscar sweeps and the AF continues to be open and fully operable. Naval strikes mounted from there and Oosthaven score hits:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Banjoewangi at 57,107

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid spotted at 4 NM, estimated altitude 15,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 1 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 2

Allied aircraft
SBD-3 Dauntless x 4

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
SBD-3 Dauntless: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
xAK Uga Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Six other naval strikes fail, however, with light Allied losses.

The 32nd TF group makes good progress toward landing at Oosthaven. Oklahoma's float planes sight another sub, so Japan knows they are there. They should make Oost either tomorrow or the next morning after that. If Japan shifts just a portion of the Bomb Bettys hitting PBang to Naval there will be a slaughter; fingers crossed Mike is focused on closing the AF instead. The FAA fighters would hurt Netties a lot; he might be waiting for one huge escorted effort on the last day. Tomorrow will tell.

5) In Burma the advancing spearhead for Pegu is tested again. I think he has recognized this one is an existential threat to Rangoon. The force advancing on Rangoon--much larger--is being left alone. The Pegu "plug" is being hit hard every day. The Allies put up LRCAP as is possible over this stack, but they are still bleeding. Even so, they come ahead.

So, June ends. Next month the Allies get another welcome up-tick in some aircraft models. The AA Pool is about to dump into the general pools. Needed relief. Efforts to make the Aleutians strong continue unmolested with great assistance by the Canadians at the forefront. A full squadron of S-boats is now operating out of Dutch Harbor, patrolling inside the Kuriles arc.

Chittagong is a large port now, taking a flood of supplies from Calcutta in either 20,000- or 45,000-point chunks. This phasing appears to optimize Calcutta's production rate, making the load phases pretty fast. It flows inland easily from Chitt.; no adverse monsoon effects have been noted.

The Big Stack has re-supplied to full "white" status in every LCU. It is one hex removed from its road-entry point and half-way to Paoshan. No pursuit from Tsuyung is seen.

The Operations report gives helpful info such as "Unit '11th Cavalry (Hrse)' changes name to '10th Cavalry (Hrse)'"

And the war goes on.

AFAIK "buffalo" are native to both Africa and Asia (water buffalo, Cape Buffalo, etc.) in many varieties. But not NA. The animal here is a bison (Bison bison in genus/species) that was misnamed by settlers. Buffalo is far more common here in the vernacular ("Buffalo nickel", Buffalo, New York, etc.), but the animal is a bison, not a buffalo.

By "boson" you mean bison? Right? Or is it a boson too?

Nice work on the CVEs btw! Congrats!

Bison. Typo, fixed now. A boson is a sub-atomic particle I think.

Nice work on the CVEs btw! Congrats!

Higg's ?

Exactly! Why the he** did the EU spend billions developing the large hadron collider when they could just come over here and study the boson. The trick is to not have a collision with one.

Not The Doldrums

Crazy active turn for 1942. A combo of SNAGGLEPUSS and Japan's vigorous attempts to take both Java and Sumatra resulted in a level of combat not seen in awhile. I will just summarize.

1) Marshalls.

--Routed my carriers down SE a bit, then to patrol back to a position NE of Eniwetok. Also have two small DD TFs looking for small fry and scouting farther south. One runs into IJN surface TF, which did not run for Truk. Sharp little battle; one DD is lost to Long Lance.

Day Time Surface Combat, near Ebadon at 130,115, Range 20,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
BB Hyuga, Shell hits 2
DD Oyashio
DD Natsushio
DD Yukikaze
DD Yamagumo
DD Shigure

Allied Ships
DD Phelps, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
DD Worden, Shell hits 1, on fire

--USN carriers are too far north for torpedoes when they finally launch. Also, TBs again experience severe coordination/disruption problems. They have pre-war COs who are excellent, so I'm not sure what I'm doing there. Carrier planes eat it on AA and don't do much.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Roi-Namur at 131,116

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid spotted at 15 NM, estimated altitude 18,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 5

Allied aircraft
SBD-3 Dauntless x 8
TBF-1 Avenger x 11

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
SBD-3 Dauntless: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged
TBF-1 Avenger: 2 destroyed

Japanese Ships
BB Hyuga

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Roi-Namur at 131,116

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid spotted at 8 NM, estimated altitude 18,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 3 minutes

Allied aircraft
F4F-3 Wildcat x 6
TBF-1 Avenger x 9

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
BB Hyuga

--Expensive late-day strike on Kwaj, but a minelayer is taken out.

Afternoon Air attack on Kwajalein Island , at 132,115

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid spotted at 19 NM, estimated altitude 19,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 8 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 9

Allied aircraft
SBD-2 Dauntless x 10
SBD-3 Dauntless x 10

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
SBD-2 Dauntless: 2 destroyed
SBD-3 Dauntless: 4 destroyed, 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
CM Takashima, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires

--TF's unloading at Eniwetok with more, escorted by decent BBs, approaching. Some av support is there now to repair Cats. CAP is farther behind, but the AF is non-existent yet. Eniwetok is a good port, but always will be vulnerable to air attack.

--Elsewhere support for tiny island frags continues. The men on Abemama are lost to attrition.

--PC Taney's Y-guns are deadly. Two penetrating hits, a fire report, and internal explosion report. I-boat does not sink, but is in a bad way. Cat reports attack later with no resolution.

ASW attack near Eniwetok at 127,108

Japanese Ships
SS I-21, hits 9, heavy damage

Allied Ships
AG Arctic
xAKL Hirondelle
PC Taney

2) Sumatra/Java.

--Two PTs sortie from Soerbaja and attack DD Kuri at Banjo. Miss, but hard datum is gained. PTs survive.

--O16 finishes off xAK Uga Maru, bombed yesterday and retreating east on fire.

--Up in Benkoelen harbor USS Growler attacks and duds on burning xAK Teikyo Maru, also bombed. She has heavy fires and damage, normally a death sentence, but is still unloading.

--The 32nd ID makes Oosthaven. No unloading today, so it could still be creamed tomorrow. Unfortunately, Japan has mined Oosthaven without detection. HMS Illustrious eats one for 33 Float and 15 System. I will trade her for the 32nd at Pbang if that deal is available. We'll see.

--hard Oscar sweeps at Soerbaja result in about equal losses. PBang takes about 100 bombers and keeps damaging many. From Oosthaven, unfortunately, the FAA is gutted due to my leaving Swordfish and Fulmar ranges long to address CL/DD threat at Benkoelen. They fly there and meet a (previously unseen) large Oscar unit of 40+. Many planes are lost. Overall the Allies lose 65 planes today, an unsustainable rate to say the least.

--DBs from Soerbaja attack DD Kuri twice. The second time's the charm, as she is hit by two 1000-lbers, breaks up, and sinks with all hands.

--Hudsons and B-17s attack BB Hiei-led surface TF at Kendari for no hits. Hudsons are savaged. What is this force there for? To lead a landing on Soerbaja directly? So far Japan is working up the Java land mass in a conventional manner, using the RRs and seeking to pocket Soerbaja. But the AF there is doing a lot of damage and eating up a lot of sweeps. Yesterday I spent the PPs to upgrade every CO at Soerbaja to at least the 50s on Land skill. Some are in the 60s.

3) Burma

--intel received that Moulmein has a piece of a brigade. Not sure there's much more. Three Chinese corps continue west aimed for that vital supply node base. Daily bombing of the Chinese.

--extremely high levels of troop bombing continue on the Pegu stack, now in Pegu's hex. No attack is ordered as about 900 AV of force is still approaching on the road from Toungoo. May not be able to wait to probe.

Desperate Hours At Oosthaven

Mike's email with the movie said "Looks like you're trying to force something at Oosthaven . . ." I did not reply.

1) Lots of TF shuffling at Oost, lots of trade-off decisions. I will gladly sacrifice every xAP carrying the 32nd ID to get them ashore, but will I sacrifice a BB, a couple of CAs, several CLs, and a lot of DDs? Not to mention two RN carriers, one with a mine in her belly? Nope. So I atomize the force.

The xAPs are shifted into 1-ship TFs and every one I can get pier space in the Port=2 space gets it. Three are left in a TF with DDs for AA protection. The balance are singles, but out in the harbor, unloading the best they can. A strong surface TF is formed and sent north to raid Benkoelen where at least a CL sits day after day guarding unloading merchants serving the 2+IDs ashore there. The wounded carrier gets a DD and is sent toward Cocos to fuel. The other carrier is moved west, still in range of Oost but not in the harbor. The FAA fighters are LRCAPed onto Oost and the bigger TF. It's the best I can do.

And here he comes. The raids are bad, but could be worse. I don't think he understood how many hulls were coming in; a lot of bombers are left on Pbang to bounce rubble at the AF. This is a blessing. But enough come at Oost with torpedoes--plus subs which come into their own minefield--to cost the Allies. I can't tell how many men got ashore. Some. Tomorrow I think the torpedo planes will blacken the sky and PBang will be left alone. I simply don't have any fighters to put over Oost except what's there. The landing force will just have to deal.

2) Allied attacks are weak. SS Flying Fish attacks CL Yura in Benkoelen harbor twice and duds both times. SS Grunion shoots at DD Matsukaze there and misses. B-17s shift back onto Djambi Oil but are unsuccessful. Eight Banshees strike CL Isuzu at Benkoelen for no hits and five DBs lost. (36 Oscars on CAP.) Four B-17 attack this same ship and miss from 8000 feet.

On land, however, the East Africans re-take Lahat, cutting the RR from the Japanese landing beaches. They will stay there. The IJA infantry is going to have to walk to PBang.

3) Out of Soerbaja, not much more. 23 Oscars strato-sweep and knock down a Cobra. Hudsons and SBD-3 hit Loemadjang and DD Michishio. No hits. My record on moving DDs is terrible so far. One DB lost.

4) In Mid-Pac better news. Roi-Namur is bombarded. Three planes destroyed by animation, including Mavis.

Otherwise, a lot of TFs moving west. Eniwetok Forts go to 1, and a motley crew of Army and support LCUs move ashore under the eyes of three BBs and their helpers. The carriers are put back on 100% anti-naval. Intel of movement at Truk.

The Marshall frags ashore are supplied. A new bunch landed by sub at Nikunau is wiped out, but does some damage and gains intel.

Ground combat at Nikunau (139,134)

5) Kangas land on Woleai and are also wiped out. Same conclusion: intel, damage to the enemy, plus, here, a "huh?" that the Allies are probing that far into the guts of the Japanese line in the first summer of the war.

Ground combat at Woleai (101,103)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 54 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 5

6) Burma. Saturation bombing of the Pegu stack again. Hundreds of casualties before the Allies do attack the city. Good info is gained. Less defense than I thought actually. No IJA HQ. I need to look at disruption of individual LCUs to see if a second attack is worth it, or a wait for the last LCU to come in off the road. Might need to finesse the Reserve settings tomorrow. If he moves LCUs over from Rangoon to stiffen Pegu he's going to be sorry . . .

Ground combat at Pegu (55,53)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 62362 troops, 504 guns, 195 vehicles, Assault Value = 2526

--------------------------

--Bassein continues to be almost an open city. Aussie 7th ID is close, with the armor behind. The Rangoon spearhead is 1.5 hexes away.

--a squadron of B-26Bs come in low from Pt. Blair and hit the AF at Moulmein, destroying several recon Dinahs. Flak is light. I think this base is ripe for Chinese attention.

7) In a finger-in-the-eye up in northern China, the refugees from Urumchi reach an open Hami and take it. The oil and fuel from Urumchi is stoppered until Japan comes and clears Hami. Again.
