I've started a short AAR based around the initial scenario in Germany At War: Barbarossa 1941.

Turn 1

I'll post updates to this thread, as I get them uploaded and written up.

Thanks for the AAR. I also own this game and love this particular scenario since it is short but with lots of quick action. Therefore I tend to play it a lot. I came up with a different opening than you did the first time I played it and have continued to refine that until I could beat the mission on very hard.

Initially I scouted with my sdkfz 222 recon unit and spotted the massive force in the south on the German side of the bridge. Because of that intel, I used an infantry unit and the recon unit (with it's remaining MPs) to fix and defend against the Soviet cavalry division on the bridge. Then I attacked the southern Soviet force with everything I had, including the Panzer IIIs from up north and the full Luftwaffe at my disposal. I targeted the Artillery brigade first so it could not support nearby units and then destroyed the adjacent infantry division. This left my Panzer IIIs and 38(t)s to destroy the enemy armor over two turns.

The Panzer IIIs are veteran and have an attached offensive staff so all your attacks get +2. Therefore I led with them in my armored engagements and they performed very well for me, even against the eventual T34/76s they met.

Thanks for that insight IronFist, I've only played this scenario the once, so it's interesting to hear other approaches. I like GaW's ability to present historical battles, in manageable chunks, with clear operational decisions to be made.

I have played this scenario a few times so because I know where everything is at the beginning I use the fighters to take out the Soviet aircraft at the edge of the map and the bombers to hit the Soviet Armour south of Radekhiv. The Cavalry unit just stays on the Bridge without moving so you have time to clear the Soviet Forces out of the vicinity of Radekhiv first before taking them on. I lost the scenario the first time I played it by not realising that if you let a Soviet Unit into Radekhiv it's game over!

After that it is plain sailing, It doesn't appear that the AI reinforces or resupplies its units so they are easy to destroy. Even the 149 Tank Regiment with the T/34 tanks can be wiped out fairly swiftly using air support and multiple attacks with ground units.
