The ONLY thing I have good to say about Battlefront, is they made Combat Mission with WEGO.

I find that newer releases have gotten the notion wego is the lesser version of play. Hmmm I doubt there even would be a Battlefront.com if their signature game had never had wego.

but the point I am making today, is, well it should would be grand, if SC3 was a WEGO design.

Gamey, no one likes gamey, and gamey is something get whenever a design is turn based or real time. They both have their own gameyness troubles, but they DO have them.

WEGO separates the posers from the real brains. Because you have to commit to a plan, and you plan better be a good one, or you get to watch it unravel with no way to stop it until the turn resets for the next move. Like chess, when you move a piece and remove your hand, sorry the move is made, deal with it.

I'd love to see a game of grand strategy, where every move needs to be thought out, and then allowed to resolve and there be no undo function. It would certainly eliminate a lot of silliness in games.

Take for instance the naval game. Hey your ships are either there, or they are not. If you miss the enemy fleet, oh well maybe next game you don't lose Midway.

They have made WEGO games in the past, so it isn't like I am asking for the insane. It's just too bad the last game of worth I recall that used WEGO beyond the tactical scale, was something from the 90s.

Surely our computers can handle the processing needs these days. And it's not like grand strategy games are graphically demanding. It's not like I want Gary's games in WEGO,I just want something like SC in WEGO.

I think if SC3 arrived in WEGO mode, the rest of the grand strategy market could likely pack up and go home.

Wego is an interesting proposal.
There must be some reason we don't see current computer strategy war games like this.
I remember a wego, Diplomacy (albeit a 1970s board game), being fun, challenging, and a bit more intellectual.

I miss the V4Victory games, basically operational scale, but wonderful for their designs.

Turn based is better than RTS (regardless of the screaming from the supporters), but both are lame in comparison to WEGO.

What I really want to know, is why are wargames not ALL wego designs? Is it too hard for the designers? I like to think that Gary's monster games are an indication that developers can master complicated, but is wego that much harder?

What made it possible in the 90s?
